Hi

I bought late last year a second hand RED MX with a serial number of 72XX, I haven't had the camera transferred to me yet by RED yet as it wasn't executed so its still under the original owners name and I am technically leasing off him until it can be turned into an EPIC and at that time I will pay what ever i need to turn the RED MX into an EPIC X or whatever is the best model.

So what do I need to do here? Apparently the original owner hasn't been contacted by RED yet for anything to do with EPIC.

So if I pay the RED transfer fee does that enable me to legally own the camera and also still be entitled to an EPIC upgrade? And can someone from RED please let me know what stage I will be allowed to enter.

Just found out that my RED was purchased on DEC 12. 2009. So I qualify for stage 3.5? That sux miss out by a month!! Is there no tolerance on this? I don't mind paying the money in full now and waiting for my Epic X. As stage 3.5 gets a brain only and not all the bits to make it work....

The Stage 2 owners have not yet received an e-mail, so it'll be some time before the Stage-3 people will get theirs.

No, only the registered owner is eligible for the upgrade. Transfers made after a certain cut off day (don't remember the exact date), also void the upgrade path via Stage 3. So the only thing for you to do is to wait until the original owner gets his camera and then transfers it to you - taken that you have a contract to that effect.

Cut-off dates are exactly that. Otherwise they'd be jello-off dates. Sorry.

If you have the cash, buy an Epic-M its only 35k more....

I really don't think you have to be a early REDONE owner (like some of us) to purchase an "M". ?

I have had lots of private emails and phone calls from some really nice people with 1, 2, 3, 4 and even 5 EPIC "M"s trying to get me to rent them for our next big job.
I asked them, how the hell did you get so many of them!!!. And all you do is rent them!!!!! ... a couple of the guys have nervously told me there REDONE numbers which are waaaaaay over mine. One fellow said that he doesn't even own a REDONE. ( i hope he was joking)
Some people are getting them , some are getting more than they need, some people are not even getting a look in.

I'm not really sure how the allocation works, maybe it's state by state, country by country?... But rest assured they are starting to come out thick and fast and the odds of you getting an "M" before your production EPIC is now very very good.
The "X" models you cant get one of those unless you were a early REDONE purchaser. "M" is the only line to que jump on i'd say.

So, with that in mind, I say just put your name into the "M" ring and look out for an email. You never know, you could be one of those lucky few that will get one without even trying.
I'd go for it. You have nothing to loose and all to gain, An awesome camera that cannot be denied and for $58k.. that is dirt cheap compared to a SONYF35, Alexia, etc ... and out performs them at all levels.
The first job I'm putting mine onto (if it turns up) will pay half of it off, the next few jobs after that it will most certainly be paying me, so it's a great investment if your working it properly.

A friend of mine paid on Monday got his delivered friday.. I haven't slept for a few nights now waiting for my fedex email... bloody FEDEX!!!!!
And the real bummer is I have to run to China and the UK for a huge shoot this week and next and I will probably miss the package turning up all together! grrrrrrr...

O well... life is like a box of chocolates...

I just want to shoot 4K 16:9 and 2:1 at up to 100FPS! I would be happy to still have my RED MX upgraded to do just that. I don't need 5k an I cant ever see why I would ever shoot 5K 16:9!

I do however like the widescreen on 4.5k, 2:1. And I am so sick of people ringing me asking me to shoot 5d or Alexa. The next person that does i will probably put a fork in their eye!!!
For some reason most people in Australia (TV COMMERCIAL LAND) want to shoot alexa just to have PRORES files. ( LAZY F*@KS).

There are NO EPIC's in Sydney (EXCEPT FOR MIKE SEYMOR WHOM ISNT RENTING HIS) so when they come I think it will be a different story.

There is something to be said about LOG PRO RES output... (that's the only thing that attracts me to the Arri). But the price, the size and the RAW shooting function pushes me away again.

The moment RED outputs 4444 REDLOGFILM PRORES, (with no module) I'll will be onto it so fast your head will spin.

oooo baby...

Mark,

For sure yours will turn up soon.... you have been a huge contributor of your workflow knowledge to the forum and to Post Houses, let alone one on one with individuals.
So any day now, then you can make your magic. You are in the top global echelons of your particular craft and I for one will welcome some Epic knowledge from you.
Even if that is dispensed over some cold ones at the Star Deli ! Between the distractions of course.
Hang tight, enjoy your next shoot and on the "other matter" no rush, I will email shortly.

Nes
