  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot Swap error- Red wants my Scarlet back!

now you know what it was really like being an early R1 adopter - it will take time to bomb-proof these cameras, but RED will do it - I probably owned my R1 cams for almost two years before they were transformed into complete workhorses....I'm sure that RED will achieve perfection faster, since they have already gone through the process once....

Scarlet #513 hot swaps from AC to side handle and back all the time, since new, with never a hiccup.

Touch wood... Production 2.0.5 firmware, side handle is I guess an earlier example; I ordered it within hours of it going up in the store and had it months before Scarlet was on sale! Dunno if that's anything to do with it.

Got the problem on epic, with low voltage in the lemo then the camera stops record even though there is volt in the handle...

I'm not entirely clear on what this means and don't want to be unfair, but what does it mean to "bomb-proof" in this context? Will I receive a camera that is not "finished" or will make me, in some sense, a beta tester? I know that $15K isn't a lot for fine cinema cameras but it's definitely a lot for me and for that amount I'm certain it's okay for me to expect a fully functioning, completely reliable camera, not something with glitches, bugs, etc.

And, if I am in some way a beta tester for a buggy camera do they pay to send it back if one of their bugs or glitches appears? I mean this seriously, not sarcastically. I've been reading about many problems and returns and the statement by the other poster that it took two years for his cameras to work properly (if that's what he meant) alarms me.

I'm having the same issue. My Scarlet doesn't jump over to the Redvolt when I remove the V-Mount battery. I've also tried unplugging the plate before removing the battery but the camera still shuts down. I'm hoping for a firmware fix, this was my most anticipated feature of the side handle. Time will tell I suppose.

then relax, Arnold, and only buy the camera when it seems completely bomb-proofed and not a moment sooner - this board is a great way to track the developments in the technology...if your goal is to have it right now, this instant, then you'll have to deal with the fact that some parts are not fully cooked (seems to be primarily limited to the Redmote and Sidehandle, in some instances, which, considering the R1 never had either of these features - doesn't mean you can't make great movies)

I was partly just having a laugh at this thread and the attitude of so many new owners, whose attitude was "give it to me now, if not sooner" - and are shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you, to find that the new cameras are a work in progress. The good news is that there seem to be very few complaints about the cameras themselves operating....only complaints about the brand new bits, which are somewhat beta still. These are not stoppers to getting a film made, just workarounds while RED gets the bugs worked out.

Not implying that y'all shouldn't be complaining - on the contrary, it's how you get RED's attention - they will make it all work, rest assured.

Thank you for the additional information. I'll address this with my sales rep, who is really the only person who can truly answer this in the end. Thanks again.

I guess it have something to do with the sudden voltage change. If I power the Scarlet from DC I get 15 or 14,9. Sidehandle power is significant lower. Could it be a kind of security to protect the cam under sudden voltage change?

I have the exact same issue. Works fine / seamlessly if you go from battery and plug the adapter into the camera (screen flips to saying DC in), but if you then pull the power cord the camera turns off (with commensurate error message about improper shutdown when you power it back up again).

Till yesterday I have been using 2.0.5 Beta and had no problem with swapping but after updating to 2.0.8 beta this functionality is gone now.

its def a firmware issue then. I reflashed 2.0.5 and that did nothing. Red told me to send in the camera + sidehandle but I cant. I would need them to tell me what solution they have found before I let go of the camera...

Got this problem too. #1399.

Gonna toy around with it a bit more before sending in a ticket. As it is, I can't send the body back yet due to booked projects.

I wonder if anyone has sent in their camera with this issue and had it resolved. Anyone? I would like to know the nature of this issue.

I thought every scarlet was currently glitching out hot-swap. Mine can't hotswap between AC or Backpack with the side-handle.

Do we all need to ship them back in?

Not every SCARLET-X is experiencing hot swap issues, no. And no, you do not all need to send your SCARLET-X back in for evaluation. I recommend saving a camera log file and contacting RED SUPPORT directly for assistance with troubleshooting.
