  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hint...

Hehehe :) I can see it's also been a long wait for you :) We can put it for sale on craigslist around halloween :)

BTW I had an 85 Jetta, and it gave me huge headaches by the end of the decade .. Oh my, I just realized I'm getting old! :)

Nah it wasn't that long of a wait actually I got mine 2 years ago last week. :001_cool: It's worth waiting for.

Jim, please feel free to start spilling some beans.... :)

Even one little bean?

I'm not sure that "ALL BEANS" are even ready for the October 30...

If ever you've run any business you know it pretty well from that side...

you know guys what I'm afraid of from this next anouncement?? it is that if RED said small users like me will have their camera's by the end of 2010 (a speculation I'm not assuming).. and it seems a bit logical coz most of camera systems takes 2,5 years dev period .. (I think) ..its almost a year now from the 2008 november 13th anouncement.. that date was a big joy for me.. I remember that Jim shouted at me when I wrote that that camera delivery will be delayed than early 2009.. I think we'll enjoy october 30th.. we are excited.. we must enjoy..
no ofense, I'm a RED fan anyway.. and I'll enjoy the announcement and of course will buy one thoose beautiful camera's when they are released.. or deposite if required..
its FEAR ONLY...

post of the year. We are almost a YEAR behind our original scheduled opening date... from selling our never used Pablo
just to stay alive in April... to now landing Gus Van Sant's Restless for 4 months and our first cash flow breakeven months since we opened
has been insane.

I know delays all too well... believe me, it sucks more letting people down than being let down in my personal experience.

I, for one, and super grateful for this new release strategy...gives us time to perfect our own business model and finish our exhaustive buildout while generating revenue to buy everything RED makes in 2010.

Ernest and Julio Gallo sold a lot of wine... with "We will sell no wine, before its time"

Still, my money is on there being plenty of positive surprises to quell any disappointment on Epic/Scarlet shipping date hits... come October 30.

Perhaps RED RAY? Any takers? (RED employees exempt, of course)

Not entirely unexpected

Not entirely unexpected

I suppose over time I have been guilty of posting a frustration or two on the boards - y'know the kinda thing that you think at the time just Needs To Be Said. And then later, well... :-)

What I appreciate about Jim's post is that it makes obvious that Red hears even the least constructive of feedback, as feedback. That takes a lot of smarts, egoless honesty and patience from the dudes BTS. (I'm not trying to switch from gadfly to sycophant, just an honest assessment.)

Even if the schedule hit is YAY (yet another year), I remind myself that there is a LOT LOT LOT of useful and *necessary* prep to do outside of pushing that Red button to make capture time worthwhile. Lots of .sigs and posts here say the same thing (notably the quote from Goddard).

What I won't do is settle for Sony (nor alia). What I will do is get better at lighting and writing, staging, acting, editing and marketing. I'll start working out again, eating right. I'll go to Victor Wooten's Bass/Nature camp. I'll read great books. I may even write some software.

But dammit, Jim, I won't settle.

my problem is that one cannot just dismiss a program like RED's.. but it is too slooowww.. especially for third world country.. I check the forum everyday and read every tid and bit about the thing.. but I hardly got access to the camera for 2 times or so,, and saving hardly to get a 2/3" or S35 scarlet when they're released..
its good but ha'''(I'll hold my breath till october 30th anouncement.. )

Very true. And those who don't feel that way, you can usually tell pretty quick-- they are the ones you don't want to work with.

Also, look at it that way: How many 'new' cameras have been announced and released by other manufacturers during all the time we were waiting for Epic and Scarlet?
They were much faster on it than RED. But how many of these Cameras from the big boys with all the buzz about come close to 10 miles against the DSMC concept?
Not a single one. Instead, even with 7000 R1 sold, the RED DSMC announcements and details known for a long time, these manufacturers continue to take their customers on the cheesy way of keeping obsolescence essential.

And RED is not working on a single camera, but an enormous versatile system of modules and accessoires. We don't want EPIC and SCARLET to be available without a useful choice of these (well, maybe some do ;-).
Sure it takes some time to get this over the line at the beginning, but once this range of items is availabe for buying and rental, and get's extended by RED and 3rdparty, supported by more software companies, etc., this will just have such an incredible impact on the industry.
With every new item being developed and released, you keep your investment and experience, you try it by renting it out, you extend or change your gear piece by piece at relatively low cost.
And then add REDs customer policy on top of that...

Here's the reality of product cycles in large manufacturing companies (Canon, Sony, etc.). The larger the company and the more complicated the design, the longer it takes. Think decision by committee...and then think thousands of decisions. We on Red User can't agree on almost anything...you think manufacturing is any different? (especially marketing vs engineering!) The time to market that RED has shown with the R1, and the new products coming up is unheard of in the industry for something as complicated as these things are. UNHEARD OF.

To say that RED's competitors could have changed their long established business plan and brought out competing products essentially over night, is crazy thinking. Notice the 'could' instead of 'should'. The products they are introducing now, were put into motion years ago. It takes that long to design (by committee), get feedback, build a prototype, get feedback, change , change, change...get feedback via committee all along the way, etc...you get the idea. Then think revolutionary vs evolutionary.

RED's timeline is as short as it is because of Jim (and his team, of course). He himself said one time that it takes a benevolent dictator to do what RED is doing. As others have said, it also takes a visionary at the helm, and further, the money to circumvent all the investor vs company opinion BS that is a part of normal corporate enterprise.

If we see products that truly compete with RED next month, the decision to bring those to market happened BEFORE RED got in the ballgame.

We and everyone using this technology can thank our lucky stars that this 'Perfect Storm' of vision, manufacturing savvy, energy, determination, thick skin, and money to make it all happen, has brought the technology to us. Thank you Mr. Jannard, and the whole team.

Just had to say something here.

very true.. there is no competetive products as of now.. this is a big problem.. raw shooting cameras costs 3 or 4+ times the price of RED.. with nothing a lot more in action..

Just had to share this quote:

Lots of things about work are hard. Dealing with trolls is one of them. Trolls are critics who gain perverse pleasure in relentlessly tearing you and your ideas down. Here's the thing(s):
1. trolls will always be trolling
2. critics rarely create
3. they live in a tiny echo chamber, ignored by everyone except the trolled and the other trolls
4. professionals (that's you) get paid to ignore them. It's part of your job.
"Can't please everyone," isn't just an aphorism, it's the secret of being remarkable.

Anyone know if a word on new accessories for epic/scarlet ie, the new evf etc. be included with the announcement? Haven't seen anything in a search. Would like to know when these might be available. I'm sure they will be bulked with the brain's release.

Thanks

The Bomb EVF is(or was) slated for release alongside the brains, and naturally at the minimum there will be I/O, recording, power, and control modules. Beyond that there's little definitive info on new accessories or updates to old ones.

BOMB EVF pricing and availability will be announced on Oct. 30th.

The Bomb EVF is in not tied to the release of the brains or the modules, as the BOMB EVF is backwards compatible ( i.e. works great on RED ONE, and is currently out in the wild being tested by beta testers on RED ONEs right now) so the release date will be when it is ready, not when everything else is done :)

YES!!! Thanks for the extra hint Jarred! Can't wait!

You've got an amazing space out there in Portland! Great layout, I'd love to see some photos once the place is done.

Congrats on the GVS project btw!
