  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hint...

Pocket 'Holgraphic' (Laser) Projector...

- No need for VR
- No need for AR
- Display device of the future. Take it anywhere..
- Ofcourse Glorious RED quality pictures in your Face.
- it is life-like. And you can add a 'virtual layer to that'
what possibilities that gives.. That is a whole new level of AR. REDreality!

Oh...and yes.. you can connect your phone to it... but a bit obsolute, because it is build in.

Something across those lines...

This is one of the best guesses I've seen yet. If it's not a RED action camera, it'll be this.

Wayne, I think he was being location specific in that at your location it will be July 7 when it is still July 6 here.
 
I think the only way it is a camera is if it's a huge technical leap in consumer-friendly cameras (like a souped up iPhone) or something innovative and different that hasn't been done before. But, it's definitely tailored more to everyone, so I don't think it will a Black Magic Pocket-sized 5K Red Raw camera or mirrorless camera.

if it is a camera, then it is probably a new definition of a camera that is likely to be part of something new that different people will find parts of, useful in their lives.

There... I think that is ambiguous enough and covers a large enough area to possibly give me a "win" of a sort for guessing what it is when announced. '-)

Jim has stated that he hates glasses, but of course a workable business plan could change that.

If it is a precise sync'able live "realtime precise world reconstruction" like Tango, only that it works, that would be interesting, but actually conditionally so.

I like the multi-sensor capture patent, but that doesn't seem to be within the "you can buy many" scope, and why would you?

Apple was admireably pragmatic in the ARkit solution. "Do stuff that works.
I like that.
And that could be a place where RED and Apple could work together, but it has little value without Unreal or Unity in there in some non-felt way.
And for RED users, it would not have any real effect unless it was sync'able to the main camera. And that brings so many extra issues outside the track and composite that my head starts to hurt slightly.


But from the things Jim says he is not interested in, it narrows down the scope significantly.

Well world peace is probably not uninteresting, but outside the scope.

I like the way Blair is thinking. Jim knows glasses. Jim knows cameras. Jim knows design. Must be a way to combine this knowledge base into some kind of super-specs that everyone can wear. I like #5. Bionic eyeballs would be pretty cool, and way overdue, since the $6,000,000 man had one, back in the 70s.


that alone would change the world for everybody. And consume entire industries at a gulp.

I'm going with glasses with self-adjusting prescriptions that can give you better than 20-20, see way off in the distance and better close vision, for super accurate focus pulls. That's something for everybody and affordable to everybody.

also fits my original "health" theme, but more aligned with the Jim knowledge base....


on a different note, it is rather amusing to read Forbes referring to Jim as a "Hollywood darling" - whatever it is that he is planning, it better help him hoist that "leader of the rebellion" flag....this "darling" business needs to go!

I think it would absolutely have a huge impact on red users... think about how much easier life would be if the .r3d workflow was totally ubiquitous. Sure all the major NLE's already support it.. but... imagine if high schoolers were making skateboard videos with pocket REDS... the amount of third party R&D that would go into new ways/plug-ins/etc to work with .r3d files would explode.

Literally... given all of the different formats over the years I've had to work with and understand... I want nothing less than the entire video world to natively exist in .r3d format. From capturing to deliverable... .r3d files are far superior to any other video codec/format I've personally ever dealt with...

It's a pipe dream.. I know.. but.. imagine how RAD it would be if the tables were turned and people had to convert their .mov files into .r3d to upload them to YouTube. Browsers naitvely supporting .r3d streaming playback.

Instead of us having to handicap our footage to play well with inferior tech, make everyone else have to step up their game by raising the bar at the beginning of the "learning chain" for every future cinematographer... their parents phones.
