  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Helium Onboard Audio Popping

FYI to other owners:

I received word from RED today that they are now aware and able to recreate the audio issue themselves. I believe it is contained to Epic-Ws on firmware 7.0.1 only.
They said their engineers are working on a fix to be put "hopefully" in the next firmware update.

So... Alright then.

good to know, just wish i knew before i shot some interviews last week, all full of noise

My camera started doing it also. Really frustrating and this type of problem can cause you to lose clients. I am going to roll back to 7.0 and see if it fixes the problem. Was about to buy the OMOD XLR2 so I no longer had to deal going into the camera with mini and not having phantom power built in.

Actually, I had this audio popping happen with the Red Volt Expander using Pre7.0 firmware and two live mics. I've chosen not to upgrade and was wondering if 7.0 or later would fix it. Hmm. Guess not!!

If only the camera would monitor the recording and not the live signal, we could catch some of this on the fly. Maybe this could be a firmware option?

I hope someone will post a solution if you hear about it!!

I just had this happen for the first time last night, brand new EPIC-W with brand new A-Box into Sennheiser shotgun mic, its really hard to even find the pop in the waveform its so small. I downloaded your sample and its the exact same pop sound.

anyway to re-install the older firmware where its not an issue? I can't find it online to download. Maybe RED can make concession for us and offer it?

Below is a link to 7.0 (expires 3/18/18). You will need to download this and then create a "Force Upgrade" folder, put the file in that, and then place the "Force Upgrade" folder on your red Mini Red SSD card and upgrade your firmware as you normally would.

I rolled back to 7.0 and it seems to have solved the problem in the tests I've done. Will be using the camera in production tomorrow so that will be the real test.

The weird thing is I'm pretty sure I was running 7.1 without any issues and suddenly it started doing it. A reinstall of 7.1 did not solve the problem.

I've experienced a similar issue. I would have this popping sound every 1-2 seconds. While trying to troubleshoot and recreate I found that if I put my fingers on the start/stop pins on the top of the body that the popping would stop. So it's almost as if they were picking up on some sort of weird radio signal that the camera is putting out. Once I touch the pins (or they become grounded) the popping would stop.

I have to do some more testing to see if there is a setting that might be causing it. I dunno. The popping isn't always there and sometimes it's soft, and sometimes it's loud.

I feel like RED could try a little harder in the audio department. It can't be that hard to put in decent hardware.

You might be right Tyler as I have a friend who is convinced that his avalanche beacon was causing the popping sound.

I can't tell you how thankful I am for this thread. I caught the tip about firmware the day before I left for an international shoot where we were running quite a bit of audio straight into camera. I would have gotten so hosed if I hadn't downgraded firmware before I left. THANK YOU people of Reduser! Now RED, please fix this really really shitty problem.

For what it's worth, I just bought the OMOD XLR2 and am still getting audio popping on a Helium Weapon on 7.0.1 like I've been getting since I got my Weapon in January (even after being serviced for another issue). Previously was getting it through the V-Mount I/O module and A-box combo, both directly from a mic and from line out from an external zoom recorder (which was getting clean audio). It's sparse and subtle. Maybe every 45 seconds or so and it seems quieter than it was before (maybe because camera gain and headphone levels are all the way down now that I'm controlling via the OMOD). Was able to shoot around it on a personal project with multiple takes, but it definitely happened consistently throughout the day. Checked playback on camera and later on my computer and it was consistent with what I was hearing occasionally while recording. Otherwise the module and audio quality is fantastic (seems like a module that should have been a Day 1 first party DSMC2 accessory). But definitely still a persistent firmware issue it seems. Glad RED is acknowledging it. Hopefully 7.0.2 fixes it.

So far, 7.0.2 is holding up for me as well - since I ruined a bunch of audio two weeks ago on 7.0.1. My audio popping was every 10 -20 seconds or so and was completely random. Pumped they fixed this, but what a nightmare trying to fix the audio bleeps/pops..

I know right?! I have two hour-long interviews that ended up with all the pops on 7.0.1 - not looking forward to cleaning them up -_-
