  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx footage...

This is going to probably sound like a really dumb question to all you pro's.

I'm used to lighting in CG using HDRI, so I know why you'd need more then a couple of stops to get good Light probe information.
But when shooting directly to the camera, how comes you need more than say 4 stops for enough DR.
This thought only occurred the other day when I was taking some pics with my DSLR and I thought about using the trick of taking two different exposures for the sky and the ground and comping them in Photoshop. To me that would give pretty good results? Although I then thought you'd probably want a couple of other stops for the dark areas on the ground and the brightest points in the sky. But surely that would be enough? Otherwise wouldn't you just end up with an image that looks over ambient and flat?

When you shoot HDR exposures and recombine them you don't comp them "as is". If you are compositing the images in linear space and one image is 4 stops over exposed you mutiply the image by 2^4 before merging it over.

You don't end up with an extremely flat image you end up with an extremely contrasty image.

I see, so does that mean you'd need more then 4 stops for most situations?

An additional 4 stops? Or 4 stops total? 4 stops of dynamic range is less than a 1st generation camera phone.

How much dynamic range you need is entirely dependent on the scene and your needs.

If you are looking for a really contrasty aesthetic and you can dial in the exposure exactly how you want on set then 4 stops might be plenty for a very stylized look. If you want a flatter look and you want to hold both the interior of say a barn ;) and also the sky outside you're going to need 14+ stops.

If you want to expose for some shadows but then use the HDR for special effects (perhaps adding lens flares to sun glints) then you might want a good 20+ stop range so that each flare is proportional to its brightness. That would be an example of a situation where maybe your final grade only uses about 12 stops of dynamic range but the HDRx™ channel lets you apply special effects like flares which affect the rest of the frame even though the source itself is all blown out. (For example if your sky is all blown out in the grade but the sun itself is flaring the frame you need to know where the sun is even though the entire sky is blown out. You nee to know "how much more blown out" the sun is.)

If you're using the footage as a reflection source for CG footage (maybe a couple cameras with fish eye lenses in an array) then you'll probably want the full +8 range so that you can get really accurate lighting and reflections even on surfaces which aren't very reflective.

just a side note...Although HDRX looks %&*$ing amazing...does anyone that's invested in one (or two) Redrockets concerned that the card won't support this new feature?

Sorry I meant an additional 4 stops.

Sounds like I just need to see it more in action.

No matter which way You cut it - the comparative performance increase against non-RR computer will still justify the purchase, even if that would mean You only get HD real-time playback as compared to 1/16th without the RR. Most people monitor the footage at HD anyway - how many do really have 4K projectors.screens?

 Peter

Somewhat ancillary, but camera No. 7996 was opened on August 24, 2010.

On October 5, 2010, camera No. 8503 was purchased.

To be pedantic, there is not necessarily a direct relationship between serial numbers and sales figures.

It would be tremendous coup for RED to have sold 5000 cameras let alone 10,000.
A verified sales number is information that would help guide the industry as a whole (especially the cottage industry guys making acessories), we have come a long way since Sony said in 2001, that they calculated there were 850 35mm camera systems available for rent in the west.

This is baffling to me. People have forgotten so fast that the old redcine was realtime at half rez with no extra hardware.

Now people are thrilled they get to pay nearly 5 grand so they get better than 1/16th resolution realtime.

But nobody likes a whiner, so I guess I'll go away now.

Whoosh. And like that, he's gone.

wait till you see what happens when you put 2 RED ROCKETS into one tower :)

After been literally Blown out of my Super Comfortable Leather Seats at Red Studios Hollywood,
do to the out of this world Images Projected for me by Jarred,
I have simply no words to describe how the HDRx looked on 4K in that big of a screen.

Insane amount of detail EVERYWHERE!!

BTW, Shika,..looked Scary Gorgeous!!

And yes as I was discussing with Jarred, a Twin RR Tower is an absolute must, even so a Mobile Rocket
is a great solution I still come to think, in my yet limited knowledge, that a Tower with Two RR
on set inside a Big Foot Cart, is the dream of every DIT and I should provide mines with one;)

Because we are busy?

Jim

I don't doubt it.

I'd love to see the graded footage since we've been hearing how nice it is. Also would love to hear more about monitoring while shooting hdrx/Easy hdr. I gather you cannot see the extended highlight latitude in the viewfinder/red LCD/sdi output? Its all very interesting and exciting. Looking forward to Epic.
