  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDR Mode...

Sweet!

I assume there'll be trade offs in motion blur. The recovered highlights might be less motion blurred. Maybe a system where you took a burst of samples per frame and blended as many as you could.

Let's see. If a sensor could do 120fps. And each "Sample" was a 360* shutter 1/120th of a second. If you wanted a 180* shutter then at your standard 24fps you would at max be able to handle 5 samples per frame. But going back to the 120th of a second for a 1/48th you'd only be able to fit in 2-3 samples assuming the sensor can only read out every 120th of a second. That would get you an extra stop in video mode with a little ghosting. If it could go: HDR + image, image, HDR +image sampling.

Maybe some even more crazy stuff? But then I assume that higher framerates would also be possible. I assume the sensor max framerates will be the limiting factor for these modes? You can't read off the sensor every ms otherwise faster framerates would also be possible right?

*wanders off back to render*.

Motion HDR at 120 fps that's sick!

120fps seems too much to hope for at this point. I'd be thrilled even if it truncated the maximum frame rate somewhat. HDR in motion just kills everything out there from an acquisition perspective. Anything Red has to do to get HDR is fine with me.

Originally I had thought it was some magic way of manipulating the raw data to redistribute detail more evenly across the dynamic range. Like if you had so much detail at one point on the histo it became redundant.

It hadn't occurred to me that the HDR would be taking advantage of unused frame rates but it makes sense. Say you were shooting 24p. All the other frames are then used to gather detail at different ISO's?

edit: Gavin part of your post went over my head, got the bit about motion blur

WHAT THE <insert expletive here>???????!!!!!! I had dreamt about something like this when I first found out about HDRI. I was thought that if anyone would do it would be you guys. This is WAY too sweet for me to even think about... I mean come on.

Until I hear otherwise, I'd assume there is some tradeoff to get a real HDR mode in motion, most likely in framerate as Gavin was speculating. Otherwise, (if HDR gives you 2+ additional stops) it seems to me you could say that Red really has overtaken film for all practical purposes.

This is big news for me as I do many time lapses with extreme DR, like full moon, sunrises, sunsets, etc.., that otherwise do not fit within 11 or so stops.

Jim let me just say that you guys ROCK! This is the coolest thing since sliced bread! I will take the Pepsi challenge with my Scarlet and and 5D/7D any day of the week! I have 15 K burning a hole in my pocket for this thing... Can I just give you guys my cash now?
:emote_happyhappy:

I wanted to do HDR video with a beamsplitter but I have no idea how red is pulling this off. Like others said, it has to be a multiple frame thing. There is a possibility for motion blur if that is the case, im sure red will figure it out.

Pretty much just multi-sample motion blur. But in little 1/maxframerate s chunks.

However if you're wanting a 48th of a second then the maximum amount of samples you could do is MaxFrameRate/Shutterspeed. Which would be about 120/48 or 2.5 samples per frame.

So if you could get 3 samples then you could have 3 full samples at normal quality and 2 samples one at the start and one at the end at about a stop slower. They would be slightly ghosted since there would be a gap between the start sample and the end sample and would gain you about 2/3 of a stop extra latitude in the highlights.

Of course if you could accept a longer shutter you could assuming that's hwo they do it get more samples and smoother less ghosting highlights. say maybe 4 samples at +1 stop and 2 samples at +2 stops.

Yay!

I talked to Graeme about this at the first RED Day and he said it was a neat idea if it was technically feasible. I am glad you guys figured out how to do it--can't wait to see the implementation.

could someone just give me a quick refresh on what HDR does? both in stills and motion.

srry for bein the giant noob lol

O RLY..? :)

That gets complicated as heck! Then again if you can process 150 fps at RC250... mhhh... very interesting stuff!

If you are looking for examples of HDR looks just spend a few seconds drooling at this: http://images.google.com/images?q=h...ent=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
