  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hasselblad vs RED Epic for stills.

I just tried out a similar lighting with two Kino Flo 4 foot by banks comparable to Peter Hurleys (Thanks Peter). Pretty happy with the results. Shot on a old Nikon D100 (6.1 Megapixel) with a Rikenon 55mm F/2.8 adapted to Nikon mount. The model is my beautiful girlfriend. At the end of the shoot I only had 47 frames.

I have not used Light room yet, I've always used Photoshop.
I started on Photoshop version 0.9 !

I can't seem to get the blotching that people are talking about...
This is the worst I can get in the way of skin colour with multiple light sources... In this i had a bit of tungsten.. a LED torch and daylight...
Looks ok to me.

Grading in the new premier is sweet... and Speed grade is way better than i thought it would be.
Man, I cannot believe I said know to this stuff for so long.... What a fool!

Mark... You're allmost pushing me towards premiere... :)

Still waiting for the raw image to start from....

Goal: show how correct exposure and color correction can get you there, given enough bits and noise controlled low iso starting point.( epic vs other , one exposure )

Hey Les,

I just setup a reshoot of my living room yesterday with Epic and P65+. The contrast range was from T 1.0 to T 22. I've got a wide bracket of P65+ raws as well as Epic with +3 HDRx. I'm gonna make a new thread when I have everything compiled, and provide raw access. Taking my time to do this right.

I'm also in the midst of prepping for our short in Louisiana that starts shooting in three weeks and trying to wrap up the 3 jobs I have in house (not to mention the two shoots I've got to do before we head South), so bear with me. In the mean time, here is the Raw file for the image above.

Chris's work speaks for itself. He is at the top of his field and has the respect of anyone who knows how difficult it is to accomplish the simple beauty of his vast portfolio.

Chris, have you tried LR4 for raw conversion yet? I just got back for a week long fine art printing seminar in Yosemite where I had the pleasure sitting next to Eric Chan who, with Thomas Knoll, is the brains behind the Camera RAW component at Adobe. LR4 is freaking amazing!! I have been able to go back to some of my maximum DR shots and find detail in the deepest of shadows. I believe your underexposed shot above would be a cinch for LR4. Try it . . . you'll like it!

Def going to have to check it out. The killer is... tech / view cameras with wide angle lenses utilizing shift for composition require a Lens Cast Calibration capture (through white plexi). As far as I know, this correction to color and vignetting is only available in C1 Pro.

Literally 5 seconds in LR3. Not close to Chris's HDR but a little time in PS would make a difference. LR rocks. Can't wait until I can afford LR4. Must find work... Must find work...

I'm impressed on how "exact" you were on the framing. I for one know how hard that is to do (especially with different cameras!), and I'm very impressed. Tip of the hat to you sir! VERY nice job.

I would agree that some things are more important than pixel count... a little test of my own posted a while back. Eyes on the hilights, please...

Hello Chris,
Your underexposed PhaseOne shot from post #113 above reworked for 5 minutes in LR4. That shot is at the maximum of DR for a quality result. Would have shot a 2 frame bracket meself:

IDK when people decided that for big prints you need big megapixels, unless people in you gallery are pixel peepin, from a standard viewing distance no one would ever tell the difference... Ive done gallery work, talking 20x30 inch prints and bigger on old cameras with 8mp and they looked beautiful...

I did a little test to see if it was possible to pull stills from the X Track for reduced motion blur when shooting video - there was an ongoing discussion at Digital-photography-school.com

Not unsurprising results.

Has anybody had better results with the Auto Focus? I had a hard time getting anything fast or usable out of it. Not that I'm going up hope, mind you...

Here is my coloring of the phase one original:full size jpeg here ( 32 meg ) : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/61349012/les_cc0000.jpg

NOTES: I noticed different luminous lighting on chairs / back of chair.I did not do any ceiling retouch to remove fire sprinklers or smooth and desat. the tones in ceiling.I did no localized color correction at all.
