  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone tried the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2?

I'm happy to answer any questions about Atomos products if anyone has any questions.

I'll add that we worked hard to ensure RED file naming works correctly, this offers a great workflow for when switching out to the red files when doing CC or final mastering.

Cheers,

Hi all,

I'm considering getting a Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 for on-set take review. I'd like record to the Hyperdeck mainly to review takes, and quickly navigate from shot to shot for reference. How snappy is the responsiveness of the unit when switching from clip to clip, playing back, recording, etc?

Specifically, I find that on the Epic/Scarlet, the camera's UI responsiveness when switching into playback mode and navigating from clip to clip is just sluggish enough to make it frustrating. Also, once you've dumped a REDMAG's contents, you can't easily pull up a shot from earlier in the day for review.

Would anyone with a Hyperdeck care to comment if it would provide an improvement in this regard?

Or maybe an Atomos unit?

Thanks,

Would the star be able to record naming and timecode data via the HDMI on a red?

I used Atomos:
-built badly! Lost the screws on the second day
-After a week he was most turned on
-Called assistance saying poor construction and he no more turned on.
Support told me that I have to keep it (new and under warranty)
-Written in their spport forum, so gentle and calm. Explaining my problem and asking politely if they could give me schematics for repair.
They told me no and deleted my post.
-Result: I have a new Ninja in the suitcase that will not turn on

Using a year Hyperdeck-Shuttle-2, Never failed, robust and reliable

Hi Kaan,

The Ninja Star would work, however if you would like to review onscreen without plugging into a field monitor, then a Ninja 2, Ninja Blade or Samurai Blade would also be a good option.

Happy to answer questions you might have.

I bought the blade and the H2S and the S2H, out of the 3 chargers only one works. Contacted support twice NO Response. So I would not recommend ATOMOS. I have a shuttle it works fine, and you get support.

I love that bracket, what a great solution - just ordered one. For anyone else looking for it it's made by a company called Bracket1

Same problem, I forgot!
Hole for power cable immediately broken.
Bought one on ebay $ 20 and solved (for 1 week)

Support non-existent, warranty useless!!!

I've had a HyperDeck Shuttle 2 for over a year now.

The good: Simple, mostly rock solid build quality wise*, small and generally does what it's supposed to do: record high quality Pro res files on the fly**.

The bad: *the mini SDI ports are in no way built for heavy duty production use; They will eventually break off into the unit. This happened to me and I had to send unit in for repair. Does anyone have a solution for this? **Also, at least 2-3 times/shoot the Red stops triggering the Deck to go into record mode. This requires 5 min+ messing with it and forcing it to go into record mode. Very annoying! Anyone else run into this issue?

My two complaints with the BlackMagic are still the same as from 2 years ago when I bought it:
1) No clip names over SDI.
2) You have to manually hit record once before recording begins automatically.

I asked at NAB and was told the ninja star does not receive start/stop trigger over HDMI from RED. Has that changed?

Haven't experienced your 2nd problem, but I've had to have 3 units replaced due to those mini DIN SDI connectors. My biggest complaint. I will say for their part though, BM had excellent customer service and I was not charged for replacement.

Hey Gavin,

I believe that RED hasn't supported our Stop/Start flags over HDMI. We would also be happy to implement theirs if they end up doing them.

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Do you still have our products? I can help you out if you wish to PM me.

Thanks Paul,

Thanks for your interest!
In 2012, with the Ninja, I had communications with Atomos.
Now it's out of warranty.
If it can be useful in sending MP with serial number
Thank you!

Hi Stefano,

Do you have a support ticket number I can follow up with the support team?

Bummer should make a Star that is just sdi. I don't want to review anything just want to have the proxies at the ready. Super interested in the shogun as 1080p monitor and proxies, but everyone has scared me about customer support.

We own 2 x Hyperdecks Shuttle 2 and transcoding to DNxHD (QT wrapped) without issues. The image seems to convert more washed out, less contrast, less saturated for some reason? If you transcoded with Red Rocket the QT are true to in-camera look settings. Hyperdeck files will NOT conform to master R3D files with timecode (as no external transcoding device will) if you need Hyperdeck for proxy files to offline edit and plan to online later.. there will be drifting and/or inconsistent match up.

The two mini-SDI connectors that stick out of the metal unit are problematic and faulty design. We have already broken one in the field and it will take very little for them to snap off (especially with cable attached!). Be careful as I am "hyper" aware and try to protect these connectors ALL the time.

A great low costing and reliable option (hopefully BlackMagic will design the Shuttle 3 with these problems in mind). Good Luck!
