  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone tried the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2?

Just got one. Its great. The pro res looks awesome. The only pain is that the 12vDCinput is apparently a custom connector... ugh.... so now the hunt begins to find the right connector so i can power the unit off of Dtap.

I have Victor Lazaro's Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 on a shoot this weekend. Gonna shoot DNxHD for Avid 5.5 ingest. Unit is actually fairly heavy, but only because the cheeseplate on the back is a centimeter thick.

I don't think its custom, its just a standard 2.5mm male DC coax barrel isn't it? 2.1mm is a bit more common, but most 2.5mm female plugs fit in 2.1mm and 2.5mm male connectors. I wouldn't think a d-tap to 2.5mm DC barrel would be too hard to find.

I think I'm going to try to just use velcro for just that reason...

I'm curious if anyone is using these for broadcast deliveries?? They just added timecode and they have RS-422 so in theory you should be able to create a master on them and connect it to a HD deck for broadcast deliveries? Yes?

Just noticed that no one has specifically replied to you about this device.

I has a lot of shortcomings, which are less important in the 'shuttle' version, but is dirt cheap. The biggest problem is that it doesn't play as Psf, which is what most VTRs want. If you have a teranex 2d, that will make Psf. That makes it a space filler for us most of the time. No index system, can't format or delete from the unit, and no ability to control how many audio channels are recorded. In ProRes and uncompressed, you get 16 channel poly audio embedded; in DNx you get 2 channels of audio. should be programmable. Great for capturing for Avid as long as you don't want to name the files or add metadata during capture.

but it's like a thousand bucks. So, there's that. But the Psf thing is a killer for us. Hope that helps.

Yeah that plate is heavier than the recorder itself, but you can choose not to use it (i forgot to give you the normal plate sorry) you can then just tape it anywhere or velcro can work too.

Thanks. Great timing as I was thinking about it.
Please share whatever you find for the Dtap thing.
What about avoiding that mounting plate and fastening directly over those batteries with something like 3M dual lock?
Cheers

Aloha,

I don' t know if this will be helpful but when I converted my Blackmagic Design 17" Smartview HD Studio Monitor to Dtap power so that I could use it in the field I found I needed to supply very stable power to the monitor or it wouldn't work. I did a little research and found a 12v stabilizer/conditioner most commonly used for RV 12v TVs (small TVs used in Motor Homes) - an Amperor Auto Surge Protector ADP-90DC. I wired a matching input plug to it and connected my RED BRICK using the Dtap on the BATTERY BELT CLIP (DSMC) and it works great. I can use my 17" monitor on a RED BRICK anywhere without the need for AC power and adapter. This power conditioner may be useful for in providing stable power to the Blackmagic Shuttle 2 as well. I got a PortaBrace case that fits the monitor and c-stand monitor frame I use to put the monitor on a light stand and the 17" HD monitor now goes everywhere with me - RED BRICK Powered!. I hope Blackmagic Design picks up on the fact that there is a real advantage to having many of their 12v products able to be powered by V-Batteries and provides for this with built-in power stabilizers and Dtap connecting cables.

'Hope this is of some help to others in allowing for more portable use of 12v equipment. Why be tied to AC and Adapter when you have a 12v V- Battery? The problem is you do often need very stable 12v power and that's where an Amperor Auto Surge Protector ADP-90DC is very useful - just splice on the proper connector.

All the best...

Aloha,
Mike

Thats the thing... BM said its standard, but how come standard plugs dont fit... im just going to buy the goddamn $150 switronics one. so stupid. A freaking cable is half the price of the recorder.

FYI, D-Tap to dc connectors without a voltage regulator is not a good idea. boxes tend to go boom. or more like crack, fizzle, smoke, no worky.

Really? That's strange, I just plugged the 2.5mm cable I use to power my tvlogic lcd into my Hyperdeck2 and it fits fine. Most of my DC barrel cables are 2.1mm plugs, but I have a 2.1mm to 2.5mm adapter cable I bought on ebay for $1 and that fits my hyperdeck2 as well.

Hi Mark, it depends how you define "better".

As Red still haven't implemented several of the original specs, these external recorders currently provide the only way of recording 1080p full frame.
Yes, you lose RAW, which is not ideal, but maybe one day Red will eventually deliver the promised 1080p Full Frame internally.

Also, I don't know what budget you have on your projects, but I personally can't afford several 256 Gb Red SSDs.
So if I want to record an hours interview or 90 minute concert, then I can't do that with the Red 32Gb SSD.

So for these uses, an externally recorder is "better".

Yep, those RED SSD's are a rip off price all right...
In your case, yes... PRORES, DNXHD right out the camera into a kipro.. shuttle or samerai is a super fast cheap way to go.

I'm just excited that this might mean that for no real extra cost I can use Scarlet for clients that are scared of or don't have time for the RED workflow, and I can maybe offer Prores instead of R3Ds to clients who regularly use editors that for some reason uses log and transfer to transcode and always destroy my gamma/highlights...
