  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone tried the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2?

Our German distributor for Atomos told me that the new firmware 4.0.2 (from Dec. 17th) should support RED filenaming on the Samurai. Adjustable audio delay too.

Not tested yet, we only have the Ninja 2.

Interesting. I just downloaded the upgrade, but haven't upgraded yet. Lazy pre Xmas evening. If that's the case with the Samurai, I'm thrilled. I never thought it would happen. I will check it out tonight or tomorrow

Can't see anything on Atomos website about the RED file naming, but maybe it's implemented. Weird that its not mentioned though

Quick note about using the hyper deck with the epic. Make sure the Sdi out is set to Auto, or manually set to your frame rate. Ie if shooting in 29.97p. Your SDI out put is set to 29.97. I had mine set to 23.98 and client wanted the 29.97. I changed the time base, but the Sdi was still set to 23.98 so the hyper deck recorded a dropped frame 23.98. Was not to the end of the world, but I had to go and re record from the red mag playing out to the hyper deck from scratch. The footage was a tiny bit noisier that way, but not terrible.

Was spotless clean straight from camera.

Hi Timur,

Do you notice a quality difference in the ProRes files when playing out of the SSD (in camera) and recording to the HyperDeck after the shoot, compared to the other method?

RED ONE MX HDMI don´t work with Hyperdeck link 2

It all depends on your needs. Hyperdeck is the only uncompressed one among these, all others are ProRes and/or DNxHD. The Samurai is the cheapest and OK if analog audio is not so important.

Ki Pro Mini is handicapped by the CF cards and no spanning, PIX uses SSDs, is very robust, offers both ProRes and DNxHD plus excellent audio.

Hi, i´m already buy a refurbished R1MX, and a Hyperdeck. But i can´t get this to recognize HDMI signal from R1MX, do you know how i must set the camera to do that or Hyperdeck will work only with a sdi cable?

Thanks a lot.

Does it record Red file names?

I had a play around with one at the ATOMOS stand at BVE and it does indeed have R3D file name matching along with triggering. It adds the sub file number too, but apparently they are working on it not doing this after feedback from users.
Hoep that helps.

I've just got a Hyperdeck this week, and (until my SDI connector arrives) I am using HDMI to record from my Epic.

There seem to be a few issues.

If I set the Red's HDMI output to be 720p, then it works fine.
But if it is 1080p, then I need to set the Refresh rate to 25Hz (instead of the normal 50Hz for Europe).
This is irrespective of the project frame rate, and seems rather strange.

Is anyone else having this issue using HDMI?

How much does the Hyper Deck weigh...and what size DNxHD files does it create? Does it give you mb/sec file size options?

25Hz is correct for 1080 Progressive HDTV. It's only 50Hz for 1080 Interlaced.

Hi,
I bought it 2 weeks ago and I don't like it. When I used HDMI-out I saw a "green screen" on playback monitor. I have tested it with Alexa and Cannon C300 (C500) - it works correct. So, It has problems only with RED (I checked it with 2 Epic and Scarlet). I use Cube wi-fi with HDMI-input, it is problem for me. But if you use SDI - everything good.
Good luck ...

Even if the project frame rate is 24fps?

Ah, you didn't mention 24fps!

I've never used one myself, but I would expect that if your camera is recording with a timebase of 24fps, you would want your Hyperdeck Shuttle to also record at 24fps, or there's going to be a mismatch and frame skipping at some point!

I double roll on most shots when shooting documentaries. The Hyperdeck shuttle has been great. I made a mount for the Epic start button side and love the combo. It gives me 1080 to look at on the plane to build edits. I've also completed spots just in 1080p. I've used this combo for a year now.

This is the setup I have. Works very nicely:
