  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone recieved the microMatteBox for Red One?

That's funny. I ordered mine the same day and I haven't heard a thing.

I ordered mine may 6 - just got a response to my email to the order status address saying that mine would ship in around 2 weeks.

I had placed an early reservation but didn't pull the trigger on it until after seeing the demo at NAB and received the same response. I think the next round is shipping in two weeks...nothing moving until then.

Ordered on April 15 and received ours about 6 days ago. It's a nice piece of kit.

Empty Box

I just received package from redrock on the order of mattebox bundle for red (order # SO19502),
when I open the box, there's no mattebox inside, the only thing inside is the handle and the swing away... The box was still wrap in the Redrock tape when I got it, there's no sign of tampering

Brian please help

We'll see how long it takes for them to e-mail me considering we ordered on the same day.

Just got mine (#SO19220), without the third stage, and invoice says it's shipped. Very annoying! I hope to get a response soon...need that third stage!!!!

...same happened here, the third stage is essential!

Same for me, I wrote to them about it and was told the extra stages were back ordered and would be shipped as soon as they're available. I'm missing the donuts, which is more of a bummer. Besides that, great build, great kit. I've got the Pelican case, which is very nice, I just wish they had made it so you could leave the side rails attached to the mattebox, having to take them apart every time is somewhat useless in my opinion.

Less pressure on the joints, I guess. But I'm happy with mine too. The donut mystery must be an oversight: They should be resting quietly in the center of the mattebox.

Nope there are metric and "American" ones. Always a headache, best to carry around a set of each.

I see, luckily I found the right one in the workshop. :)

As for carring: I like to keep the side rails AND the sidewings attached. Maybe the sidewings aren't recommended to leave on, but that should have been considered by designing it. It's just too much of a hassle fumbling up to 8 minutes on the mattebox before filming. It would have been better if the sidewings would sit also on the outside of the hinge like the eyebrow for this. I would have liked to see a bit less plastic on the mattebox, but apart from that I'm lucky with it.

I'm considering a stormcase with cube shapes. Already have a patched one for my dedos.

Just got it today, and although I haven't had a chance to play with it in a shooting situation, here are my initial thoughts.

Pros: Build quality is really good considering the price. They use plastic in places that it makes sense and then heavier materials where reinforcement is necessary. It's not a small mattebox, but weight isn't too bad, thanks to the plastic components. Overall, I'm impressed with the build quality.

I actually like the filter trays even more than I thought I would, although I have to agree with Jeff that the 4x4 inserts are a bit weak. But it probably works just fine. I don't own any 4x4s myself, but you never know when you might use them.

Cons: Lots of loose particles. I assume from the finishing process, lots of tiny little black flakes everywhere. I'm a stickler for this kind of stuff, especially when it's around optics and sensors. I wiped everything down, got as much of it off as possible. This isn't the first time I've seen this. Products from other companies have had this same problem. Not sure what the solution is there. Not a huge deal, once you clean it up.

Side Wings are missing screws. I saw this posted by another user earlier in this thread, so I'll follow the instructions to contact support.

I'll update this once I have used it in the field, but those are my initial observations.

Got mine. Everything's there.

The right side wing's screws were actually too tight (I assume to prevent them falling out or being lost like they have for others), but a quick turn of the Allen key solved that.

The 19mm arm and swing-arm mechanism connection seems to have been machined to very tight tolerances, as it is actually somewhat difficult to get the rails to slide in unless they're lined up absolutely perfectly AND I force it some. Obviously the first thing I checked is that the female end was sufficiently loosened, and it was. Even when they are made to slide together, it's still so tight that it's hard to slide forward and back to make adjustments. Is that normal?

I've had mine for a couple of weeks now, and I am really impressed with it. The price point is KILLER for what you are getting. I really love the swing away feature, as it makes lens changes so quick and easy. It is big, but it is not bulky / heavy, which is great as it does not add much weight at all. Everything has been working as advertised, and I'm very glad that I got this matte box. It is worth every penny and then some!

As others have mentioned, there are some issues that get introduced when the unit ships. But I have seen this with several other vendors so I think it has to do with the shipping, and not the product. There were black loose particles floating around. Not a huge deal, as a can of air, and a cloth cleaned that up quickly. And the screws on many of the pieces were loose, and I had to go around and tighten everything. Again, not a huge deal, as once it was tightened, it has remained that way since then. As I've seen this with other vendors, my guess is that with the increased cost of gas, the shipping companies are packing more and more in their transports, and not being as careful as they once were, which means rougher handling over all. (I have actually received some brutalized packages because of this.)

I also got the filter set, and have been enjoying that as well. So far the filters have been working great, and I am enjoying them. I haven't had a chance to do a direct comparison to other brands yet, but I haven't noticed any issues with them. They seem to be a solid choice, and the price is definitely right. I can't wait for them to come out with more filters!

UPDATE:

Okay, the two missing screws I found at the bottom of the box, which is better news than they are missing completely. So, no need to contact support.

However, and believe me I don't complain much, the little black flakes have caused havoc, and I'm a bit frustrated by it. There was an incredible amount of this stuff throughout the packaging and on the unit and accessories. I tried my best to blow them out, wipe them down, vaccum, etc. When I thought I got most of it, I loaded the filter trays and started to play around with the matte box. When I pulled out the filter, a Pancro IR/ND 1.5, I noticed there were black specs all over it. I reached for my Rocket Air Blower and attempted to clear them off. For the most part, I got them. But I noticed a small scratch on the filter that was not there before. Don't know if blowing the air dragged one of these metal/plastic specs across the filter and scratched it or what.

So, I had to go in and do another cleaning, trying to go through every crevice to make sure I get as much of this junk out as possible. The toughest thing is trying to see if I'm getting it out of the included foam.

This just shouldn't happen. I'm not expecting this matte box to be an Arri. I think for the money, it's a great alternative. It's things like this though that frustrate me because it's not a design thing, or even a build quality issue. It's an issue of quality control I guess.

I give the product a thumbs up and only post these comments because I want to see RR succeed with future products and maybe this feedback can be helpful for them.

It must be QC because I didn't have any black flecks in my box or in the foam. I haven't even had any flaking off the flags either. Sorry that your having to deal with that, but I'd put up with alot for $5k less than an Arri!;)

Me too. Again, if it was a build quality or design flaw, etc. I might be willing to say no big deal, I saved a lot of money. But when it starts to affect my optics, possibly getting into the gate during lens changes, etc, then no amount of money saved makes me feel good about that.

Hopefully I'll get most of it cleaned up and I'll forget it was ever an issue. Maybe I just got unlucky.
