  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone recieved the microMatteBox for Red One?

My Red looks naked without a mattebox. Please don't make me gaffer-tape a Chrosziel to it...

Nice... Just got a tracking notification from Fedex - my Red won't be naked for much longer!!

Nice pics gents - thanks for sharing.

Zakaree, what lenses do you have there?

Light leakage... Gaps between filter stages...

Anyone else having these issues. I have small gaps between filter stages, about 1mm and re-seating and tightening everything down doesn't help. If I tighten the stage locking screws (black screws on the side of each filter stage) anything more than barely tight, it causes the stages to flex a bit and increases the gap.

An occasional bit of light leakage isn't uncommon with a mattebox around filter stages, especially one that's had a long life. Usually fixed with some foil or duvetine. But this issue seems to be unusually pronounced with my mattebox.

Anyone? Comments? Sugestions? Did I get a bad set of filter stages?

While we're at it, is there a reason the 4x4 matte inserts are so paper-thin? Not that I really care about them, I doubt I'll ever put 4x4 filters in this mattebox for any of my usage.

Here are some pictures that I just took of the mattebox on my RED. Sorry the pictures are so crappy. After I got inside I realized that the ISO was at 800 and made the pictures grainy. Will try to get better ones tomorrow.

Looks great Matthew. I see you are going without the dual battery plate. Are you concerned with power issues without the plate? I thought it added a voltage regulator to the mix.

I just took it off for the picture as it looks funny with it on. I kinda wish I could run the batteries without the adapter sometimes because I would like a light rig.

Hey shiny, thanks for that. Although, that's not the issue I'm having. Anyway, I'm going to go disassemble the filter stage assembly and see if something just isn't put together right. There is something wrong here, I have visible gaps between filter stages, I can hold my mattebox up in front of my monitor and look at it from the side and see between the filter stages to my screen.

I'll see what I can find out by removing the stages and putting them back together. I may have to get this mattebox replaced, but hope it's an easy fix... Just haven't had time to work with it lately and didn't notice until just yesterday when I finally got to put it in front of some primes. Had to wrap the mattebox in foil and gaff tape it down to shut off the light leakage.

OK, got the problem figured out, it's a filter tray issue. Or actually a stage issue, but relating to the tray - trays have to be inserted to show the problem and I can duplicate the problem with either tray I have when inserted into the second stage..

I'm writing up an email to send over to RedRock. I'll see what they say, but I think I've most likely got a defective filter stage.

Just got my mattebox. Red Bundle. Looks great. One question, though. I measured the foam that it shipped in to make sure that it would fit into the Storm im2700(same size as pelican 1600, but I'm not a fan of pelican's latches) that I ordered for it, and it seems that it ships in the same foam as the 15mm bundles. The dimensions are that of the Storm im2600/Pelican 1550. Do all bundles ship in the same packing? Is is just that if you buy the case from Redrock that the 19mm version of the case is larger with more accessory slots? I guess I wish that'd been more clear before I bought a case. Oh, well.

Yeah Brian just found out today that unless you buy their RED mattebox case you get the 15mm foam for a Pelican 1550. Kinda frustrating since I already got a 1600, but I guess it does give me extra room to pack more filters and accessories in. I'm thinking about cutting my own foam anyhow because you have to break the mattebox down more than I would like to get it in the case.

Same here. All the screws on one of the side flags were loose/falling out when I pulled mine out. I just dipped the screws in a little glue and screwed them back in. Works great so far.
