  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Had to stop and take stock for a second.

Great post...great perspective...thanks !!!

what ever happened to the andromeda, did the inventor get bought out? I seem to remember this being the case.

Last time I heard about Juan Pertierra back in 2009, he was Senior Member of the technical staff at Cine-tal Systems.

Thanks for this trip back through memory lane.

I see I was late to the party.
Remember reading up on RED, methinks january'ish 2006.

But no posts just yet.
Got my HVX in may, I think.
Thought it would fit all my needs.
Ended up being the camera I have had that I least miss... :)
540x960 4:2:2 bluescreen anyone? :)

But actually, fighting the keys and knowing Graeme was onboard was what mattered.

Whe n everyone was shouting "Scam!" after I put down the 1k deposit, I allways responded that

If I am ripped off, I never had this much fun for 1k$ anyways.

Everyone was a dreamer, and RED was something to dream about.

So much has changed since then, but RED is still present everyday in my life.
Actually the only common thing I have from fall 2006 to now is RED presence in my life.
Everything else has changed....
(As a nod to Jims slogan...)

I sold my aaton ltr and bought a dvx way back then. I shot "a scanner darkly" on the dvx as it was the only true 24p camera at the time ( in the prosumer market). From there it was the hvx with a letus adapter and then red one, now epic. (and a fs700, I have to admit ).
My dvx100 is still in rental and I get an email occasionally telling me that it has gone out on rental - always makes me smile to know that it's still working and buying me a bottle of wine.

The DVX is still a great camera. Forget the Barry Green special, you want a documentary to look like cinema shoot Red, you want it to look like raw truth? Shoot DVX.

that camera made the trusty PD150 look like a broken matchbook in comparison. and the HVX was twenty steps backwards.

my biggest concern is... if "younger generation" means everyone who started shooting after these cameras.... how many people are looking to fill a very narrow market? how many kids on long island are buying scarlets not to make their own films, but to call themselves a rental house / production company? I don't want to be protectionist, and I don't want to hear anyone use the phrase "cream rises to the top," but this is a real concern.

if you run a carwash on the south side of town, and ten new car wash joints open up because the necessary equipment costs 1/10th as much, you wouldn't hear anyone talk about cream rising...

Remeber this UNCOMPRESSED 10bit 4:4:4 HD directly from the DVX's CCD Sensor with 9.5 Stops of dynamic range;

I am confused, did panasonic also make an announcement? :)

'Couple of points...

In retrospect, the HVX200 is probably the worstcam I ever had.
Hype is hype. Even in DVXuser with Barry Green to support it.

If I was to get one of my old cams back today, PD150 it would be...

Hahahaha

As to your second comment...
It is not about having a car washer, but how pollished the clients car looks afterwards.

Kinda implying:
Be good atwhat you do.

That will count

Oh yeah. I remember those days! I even remember dropping $16k on an HVX200 when it came out and using that damn Raylight Codec because there wasn't an easy option to work with that material on a PC for 6 months or so. Coming from film I loathed the color output and resolution on that camera.

You are totally right, there was so much hype on the HVX on dvxuser, that I bought in a flash as soon as it came out, and then wondered at the "emperor's new clothes" :) I.e. it never lived up to its billing.

I think im the only person that liked the HVX200.....

It got me started in the industry seriously. I had a DVX100, and learned the basics on that, but the HVX, with its Variable frame rates taught me to think in terms of time, speed and motion. It was NOT perfect, but it was a GREAT learning tool.

This was the first "real" job i ever did. The music video that got the ball rolling. Cannibal Corpse: Evisceration plague.

How did you all get your start? Where were you in 2005? hah. This should be fun.

It's got like 1K of rez, but it looks GOOD ;).

Found that great quote in there: was that our Steve Gibby? He was so right with his prediction:

"A thoroughly refreshing and progressive breath of fresh air in a media equipment industry obsessed with protecting their upper end equipment offerings - encouraged by studios, networks, stations, and producers fixated on maximizing their legacy investments.

The potential end result of this?

Disruptive technology = quantum progression = creative latitude = enabled production = industry democratization = fiscal diversity = new paradigm

The sooner, the better...

Gibby"

That's a very good post down the memory lane, in 2006 I had just got the JVCHD100, and use to lurk on the DVXUSER site.
I am 50, and off to Africa for a week of bliss, filming on the Epic.
I still have my first Arri BL16, A SHVS, A UMATIC, A Betacam (Ikegami)
Then its started getting crazy from 2004 onwards, just too many cameras
to talk about.

Hey Ketch you are not old nor Timur, or me at 50 just mellow.

Keep Working Guys and have fun at what you love most, making films.
