  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Guessing game...

Joseph do you know if the ssd reader were standard in the old specs? Having hard time to se new scarlet users
Wanted to invest in cf cards.

It wasn't. Nor was the(a) side module. In the Scarlet-questions thread, it was confirmed that the SSD side module would be default. If it's still included, I don't know.

Maybe they'll(RED) offer different solutions. Perhaps they'll do a "package" with a reader included.

my only speculation and hope is that the interchangeable and miniprimes go on sale on the 3rd

originally my plans were to get the fixed, now thinking just on the interchangeable and a couple of miniprimes

What I think may be the true situation is that you have but heard about the Scarlet for so long, y'all act as if you have owned one and you are ready to "step up".

With all due respect, I think you should be the last one to say something like that ;)

I think too many of y'all's expectations are severely swelled up.

Of course! :) Isn't that natural. Time has past. The industry has changed and it benefits us all. How can I be a Reduser at heart and not want 4K? Unless you know things we don't, I don't see how this discussion is so bad. But maybe that is just me.

Scarlet (the one I shot with) had a resolution of 3K. That is still high Resolution. It's no "5K", I know. But it's no $30,000 ($43,000 for the EPIC-X) for the "Brain only"

[...]

Ok, Jim said that if Scarlet disappoints, he will retire. I think you have to put that a little bit into context. For some people, the EPIC still somehow "disappoints" them. That doesn't mean that RED failed to defeat all odds by bringing a camera so small, so powerful, so affordable to the market. That doesn't mean it "disappoints" when a few are disappointed.

Don't forget the original Scarlet S35 was 5K for 7.000 - that was of course without HDRx. So on some level it is duable or possible. We don't make the cameras, so we can only guess, and quite frankly that's what all these posts are about. I don't think people will be disapointed with the new specs, not at all, but this is fun discuss (or at least I think). Earlier these discussion was what helped shape the Scarlet and Epic-lines, so I don't really see what's so wrong about it.

Without calling people names or hurting their feelings, I think some of you might need to wake up to reality and see where RED differentiates themselves from Canon. If you aren't happy with those differences, feel free to choose something else other than RED.

LOL.. why does this have to get ugly? its a thread dedicated to pure speculation!

reading the craziest specs written on a camera forum, wont come close to the excitement of having the inevitably more modest camera in your hands, shooting. people know that.

Once everybody got their camera, it'll be dead silent in here ;D ...it just might turn out the other way and get completely over-run! :D

Still guessing... We know what we know for the moment.
We waited. We have all the information they gave us.
People are asking here for the things to be added to the Scarlet that you find today in the EPIC.
People at RED have done a wonderful job. I'm very happy with the thing we know for the moment.
The only thing is the price. And thats going to be between 3K and the price of an EPIC-X. Jim will surprise us... I sure.
Just wait a few more weeks and then we know.
Just read my signature...

I meant the side module. Already got the redstation peaces.

I see how some could easily have interpreted "stepping up". I apologize for coming across like that.

I had in mind that people may have been so used to the idea that after 3 years of thinking about the Scarlet, they might expect Canon to easily have something similar, forcing RED's hand to give something even better...closer to the EPIC for the same price as a Scarlet. I seriously doubt it is hardly the case, so I hope people's expectations aren't too high and then disappointed when the Scarlet turns out to be a superb camera...but not an EPIC at Scarlet's price.

I still would like a Scarlet, and I hope I'm not coming off as a snobby brat. That'd be the last thing I'd want. I've been blessed beyond my wildest imagination and that is why I try to give back to the community as much as I can.

Wow. From reading the last 60 posts, it looks like the majority of you guys have already been shooting RAW motion pictures at very high resolution. For this reason, you may be spoiled so much that a Scarlet in itself is not attractive and only an EPIC-X will do!

If that is the case, why are you wanting it to be an S35 chip?

What I think may be the true situation is that you have but heard about the Scarlet for so long, y'all act as if you have owned one and you are ready to "step up".

Tell me. What is RED committed to? RAW and High Resolution. Yes.

Scarlet (the one I shot with) had a resolution of 3K. That is still high Resolution. It's no "5K", I know. But it's no $30,000 ($43,000 for the EPIC-X) for the "Brain only"

Scarlet also has high frame rates. Scarlet is much smaller/lighter than te EPIC. Scarlet has RAW. Scarlet has a high Dynamic Range. Scarlet has HDRx which takes that high native DR to even the next level.

What has RED shown that it is not committed to? Large sensors in and of themselves. Besides, what is wrong with a 2/3" chip? There are many shoots in which a 2/3" camera would be better suited for the job.

Come on Joseph, we all know you have a relationship with RED that is a bit elevated above what most of us have the privilege of. Which is perfectly fine :-) I'm very happy for you. Just asking, let us have a little fun without the condescension. After all, we have to pass the time somehow :-) Nobody is slamming the 2/3" 3K Scarlet, just contemplating the possibility that it may have changed. Harmless, if remaining open-minded. As far as thinking some of us need to "wake up to reality," I think is a bit unfair. After all, us outsiders really have very little idea of what the reality is.

Joseph, we have met, hung out a bit, and I know for a FACT what a generous, kind, and polite person you are, so I'm not at all getting on your back. Just sayin' "hey dude, lighten up a bit." :-)

Hehe. Fair enough. :) perhaps it was too late last night and I shouldn't have posted.

Both station and side module were not included in the old "original" package back in the day. Jarred confirmed in the dedicated Scarlet-questions thread, that the SSD-side module would in fact become the default module (I strongly presume that to mean that it would automatically be included in the base pack). If that still holds true I do not know - but it would surprise me if it isn't still so. But as I mentioned before I think they'll do a variety of package-deals for both practical reasons(RED's sales department) and for the sake of satisfying as many Scarlet-customers as possible and giving them a smooth and easy purchase of their camera and accessories :)

I agree with your thinking here. It's all about expectation management at this point. That being said, a 4k S35 Scarlet wouldn't really be competing with an Epic at 5k resolution. It would more likely compete with the Red One, but in my estimation, the creation of the Epic may very likely render the Red One obsolete, if not now, in the future. It would be hard for a film project to choose a Red One over an Epic right now, and even more so in the future.
Also, if Scarlet does come out at 3k and/or 2/3 sensor, then it will be outpaced by other cameras coming out in the near future with larger sensors and 4k resolution, which will no doubt be priced under 10k. It is all speculation here obviously, but where the market is heading are things that should be considered. Unless, Red isn't really trying to target filmmakers with the Scarlet and instead is solely targeting the videographer market. I can't see a camera that satisfies both demographics, as the filmmakers want larger sensors and the videographers prefer smaller.

No worries Joseph, I am sure you are well-meaning :-) The thing that got our gears turning, I think was the "monumental changes" phrase Jim dropped along with the "M" word used in the orginal title of the Scarlet announcement announcement thread. It certainly did for me. They could have been intentional red-herrings though.

missed the title before the edit, care to repeat? thanks! :)

...Although as you know the original scarlet s35 does sound like what your describing there, a 5k s35 sensor in a scarlet brain for $7k.. that was 3 years ago... so it wouldn't be Canon forcing REDs hand. considering the disappearance of EPIC S, its surely at least possible that an iteration of scarlet with similar specs may be coming..

Correct. And as you probably know as well, that original "S35 Scarlet" concept is found to not be viably made. That concept starts at close to $12,000 for the brain only. Ten, you are looking at close to $20,000 just to get a basic package.

Is even a $15,000 package like that going to please the general "ScarletUser" crowd? From what I've gathered, even $10,000 is pushing their budget....

I think the answer is yes since knowing that the brain would be $7-8k'ish, when you tack on a basic package to that it ends up being around $15k. A bit of a strech moneywise, but well worth the investment.

I doubt anyone will have anything to compete with 3k 2/3" fixed lens, Redcode, 120fps, HDRx, time lapse, ramping, in camera rack focus... I'm not saying it's impossible I just highly doubt it.

Even with a large sensor and larger resolution (if it can actually measure anywhere near it's stated point) without RAW and done well as well as post programs to handle it I'm sorry but it will not even come close. Doesn't matter if you have the best camera in the world if you are recording to a crap codec you are limited by that, or have to attach a series of other products just to get the picture out of the camera you should have had in the first place.

then again we all want cameras for very different needs and I respect that, I just think some are underestimating the power of raw and how good even the initial stats of the scarlet would be today without the improvements to Redcode rates, HDRx, and who knows what else.

Have a good one and remember to play nice and shoot for the moon, because even if you miss at least you'll end up amongst the stars!

Thanks then I remembered it correct. Hope we still se the ssd side module on the final specs.
Cheers!
