  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This is kind of stupid, but we all need something to do between now at November 3rd.

So, what are your predictions for the Scarlet announcement?

My guess:

$8K for the fixed package, including REDmote, side handle, 5" LCD, SSD module, and a REDvolt and charger.

$5K for a Scarlet Interchangeable, $8K for a Scarlet Interchangeable and set of mini-primes.

Shipping late November (for the heck of it, I'll say November 28th).

Specs will be mostly what we've already heard. 3K 2/3", 120fps at full resolution and 180fps 2K, 12-13 stops native dynamic range, rated ISO800, HDRx. Possibly a future upgrade path to a 4K+ sensor (the Scarlet Dragon). Possibly future RED mini zooms.

Or Epic-S (or whatever Scarlet S35 had changed into) and Scarlet are now one and the same. 3K is past and now it's 4K, S35 sensor... For less than $10K.

One can dream, right? :)

one thing you don't have to guess about is a decent dynamic range and saying goodbye to long gop capture (avchd, h264)

thats good enough for me

This also sounds unrealistic. Basically a totally new camera...ready to ship by the end of the year? Highly doubtful.

something like RED One MX but in a small body?? That would be great.
and a -10k price tag....

Ok, I'll play:

Personally, I think all new Epics and Scarlets will be getting the new "Monstro" generation Sensors. I don't know if this means Scarlets starting with misterium X but having the possibility of going "Monstro", or a "Monstro" Scarlet S35 and Epic to be launched this year. This would explain the price increase for 2012 for Epic, beyond the tragedy in Japan, of course- it would mean 2012 Epic would be "Monstro", with 2011 M and X being Misterium X. In the very old roadmap, there was EPIC X as the camera for Red One users, then an EPIC that was not X for everyone else. Maybe this is the "monstro" in the Epic range. I don't know if this means everyone with an Epic X and M sending their cameras for the sensor upgrade. It shouldn't be very expensive for current X and M users, maybe a 2 000 USD upgrade or something like that.

Or maybe this just means Misterium X will be for Scarlet, Monstro for Epics. My biggest hope is for the Scarlet S35 to do what the current Epic X does. If Epic users get to have a fantastic upgrade for 2 000 USD to an unbelievable sensor, so be it. having the equivalent of the current Epic-X for sub 20K (shootable) would be a dream come true!

This is obviously all speculation from my part, no solid info or basis for my reasoning but my own amateur detective skills (which are terrible).

If Scarlet can land in $10k-ville, produce 4k, S35 sensor, and have interchangable lens mounts I'm more than sold.
If I can electronically control Canon glass and also use Nikon and Leica R I'd be smiling forever.
If somehow the heavens open up and there's a FF35 sensor in there with a selectable crop mode for 1.55x I'd bake a cake for RED and deliver it to them with a check.
Oddly I find myself wondering about the camera's size and battery options. I'm guessing were's going to see a really awesome new form factor here. I see a built in 3 or 4 inch LCD, perhaps a touch screen. CF and SD slots are a must in this price range.

I have a gut feeling that they're going to stun us by keeping the Fixed Scarlet (or maybe it won't be fixed anymore :) ) cost as they last posted or very close at around $6,000 - 6,500. In addition, giving us a major increase in capability. I believe they're going to completely mind screw us. Especially, with the other major camera companies TRYING to compete. An increase in sensor size would be nice also. I would say, be prepared for an awesome crazy day on Nov. 3rd.

Jim said he would retire if the Scarlet disappoints. He is giving everyone over a month to speculate. Imaginations will run wild. He still expects it to impress. WOW!

they're not trying, they do, how many people shoot scarlet today, and how many 1Ds, 5Ds even 60Ds shoot amazing stuff today? - millions
my guess is that Canon's announcement speed some things up, they're getting close, Red has to move fast

From everything Jim Jannard has said recently, I agree that Scarlet is now S35, but it's probably 5K (I suspect that designing and fabricating a totally new 4K sensor would probably be more expensive than using a two-year-old 5K one). It is essentially the Epic-S. Red has reinstated the "Scarlet" badge, which now denotes a nonupgradable sensor. It will do 120 fps at windowed 3K. It will cost $15K.

I like the Scarlet just the way it is. 2/3 is perfect for me. Would be nice if that fixed lens wasn't fixed (but still came with the package), but hey, who's complaining.

Everyone saying that is will be 4k/5k and have a S35 sensor... I think that might hurt Epic sales, no?

The Scarlet is already above and beyond what most of us need. I'll be stoked if they release the Scarlet with the current specs on November 3rd.

I literally can't wait!

I'm talking about with RED's latest technology. I believe in RED from following Reduser, learning the technical aspects, and their philosophy. That's my opinion and excitement, so I guess I have to talk a little trash. I believe RED will be just fine. Let's not get too serious here. ;)

To be sure, specs will be more than we have been expecting and the price will be reasonable, but I have a feeling that everything we've seen of Scarlet so far has been window dressing. I think Red has pulled a rope-a-dope on the competition (and us, too) with all the previous specs...and what we'll see on Nov. 3rd will blow us away.

I believe they had made the choice to move into s35 long before most people think. I posted months ago that this was their plan but I think it got deleted. Something that Jim said way back in the spring that made me think that he is just not satisfied with 3K. The fact that Canon and Sony are now taking Red seriously means that Red now has to take them seriously. I believe they did much earlier than they let on to Red user.

I'll play. I think the game has changed to S35 size sensors. The Scarlet always had a dedicated sensor, so no reason they would use the same MX as they're using in EPIC. So they may have increased the size of the sensor to S35, but kept it at 3K because of the data rates involved with 4(.5)K. Going 4K+ would make Scarlet too expensive in 2011/12. This would also give it a an DR advantage. They offset the additional cost of the new sensor by not doing a fixed zoom, but selling them with Canon and (preferably, just to rub Canon) Nikon mounts.

And then there is #21. Something Image Stabilising? Prores output?

The 3K would keep Scarlet still below the EPIC specs in deliverable resolution, add in some build quality factors (hummer versus tank) and ports on the body and EPIC is still ten times a Scarlet. Very high end versus pro.

I just hope they can keep the shooting package around... $7K?
