  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GTX480 WOW! - Resolve test -

Perfect!!

I have i7 980x 4.2ghz and no more than 21 fps with half debayer... The only way is clock 980x at 5ghz... But very dificult to have stable system at this clock.

Saludos,

Jose.

I'm surprised at this. I was really hoping a 4.2GHz Hexa-core could manage 24-25fps half res good debayer. The math worked out (I'm getting 15/16fps on a quad core i7 920 at 3.8GHz). Can I just confirm that this isn't related to other settings. Have you tried having the timeline at 1080p etc (maybe you tried at 2K?). 21fps is close though, but based on that, as you said, you're looking toward 4.8GHz+ for 24fps.

I wonder how a 5GHz 2600K would hold up. Has anyone here tried a 2600K at 4.2GHz+ ??

It looks like the new Sandybridge LGA2011 chips coming out later this year will support dual-CPU mobos. There's also octo-core 1356 chips planned which could happily do it at 4Ghz which may even be stock speeds.

It's going to be an exciting year for pro-sumer desktop grading builds!

Hi jose i was speaking to Luigi about configuring my two gpu's to work with resolve and he recommends talking with you because i use a gigabyte board, i have (1 GTX 285 and 1 GT 120) on a GIGABYTE Z68X-UD7-B3 motherboard bios ver F7 i can boot with both cards in without any efi string edits and can see both in the about this mac info screen but resolve only see's the card in the first slot and i would like to use the configuration by black magic for the cards i have if possible, any info or help you can offer will be appreciated greatly thanks in advance.

Hi Dean, what problem do you have exactly?. I recommend two gtx285, better than gt120. Gt120 is recommended only for macpro because it didn't has any more power connector. You cant use gt120 for procesing cuda.

I find, that for me, the bottleneck in Resolve is not really GPU, but a CPU. First, I use 8 processor Mac and it is only capable of 1/4 res real time debayer. Commercial clients expect more, than just a low res video on a final grade session. Second, the moment you hit dissolves or HDRx, you will not get a real time playback, no matter how many GPUs you have or even a RR. Because of these reasons, I prefer to work with cache turned always on and debayer set at 1/2 Premium. This way, no matter how many nodes you use or how much NR you need and no matter what debayer quality you use, you will always get a real time performance. I just wish, that Resolve allowed to store debayered DPX and graded using those. This way system wouldn't have to perform debayer every time you change the grade. I have a FC drive connected, that I use for cache and that's it. KISS...

Jake, I prefer 1/4 res than 1/2 res playback. Why?, because the perceptible sharpness is near the same between 1/4 and full. But 1/2 and full is completely different. When I finish, I set the project to full and render. My clients are happy with 1/4 for grading.
I have realtime dissolves at 1/4 res playback with my system with 6 cores (I tested 10 second dissolves), but you are right, the cpu is near full. In the other part I do a lot of matte and composition with prores, and I need a lot of GPU for that.
Maybe cache only for debayer can be good.

hello jose thanks for your reply i have both the GT 120 AND THE GTX 285 i want to use the GT 120 for gui and the 285 for cuda but when both are in at the same time they dont work as it should, my hackingtosh dont see any cuda cards even though it see's both in the about info i guess i'm having problems running dual cards, i know its recomended to use a card for just gui and one for processing.

What macos do you have?. I don't recommend more than 10.6.7. Try this in the terminal.

cp
/Library/Frameworks/CUDA.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/libcuda_256.01.10.dylib
/Library/Frameworks/CUDA.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/libcuda_256.02.05.dylib

What nivida driver do you have?. Can you test with an old driver not the latest?. My actual driver are:
GPU driver version: 256.02.05f01 (for this version you need the path under terminal)
Cuda driver version: 4.0.14
I'm sure that the problem come from 10.6.8. It has a lot of problem with nvidia driver. I didn't update to 10.6.8, and I think I will never update to that version because my next move is to 10.7. Sorry that I can't help you so much.

saludos,

Jose

ok i'll try that and see if it works i appreciate the help you are giving me maybe running two gtx 285 may work better :)

Two GTX 285 will be a lot of space and power needed…

jose you think i suould get multiple 470's instead? if this is better i would right away

For me I prefer Gtx470, but is a little more difficult to setup. Because its not officially supported by macosx.

update

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd check in. I've been running a GTX 480(OC) for GPU and a GTX 285 for GUI for a couple weeks now and the performance is great.

As a reference for performance see this thread: (and please post your results if you haven't): http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/277/7454 , I'm getting 7 nodes (with blur) realtime (using the 6 node test and duplicating a node).

I'm using GFX strings as per this guide: http://aquamac.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=hack1&thread=569&page=11

I'm using 256.01 nvidia drivers (I had problems with 256.02)

I'm using CUDA 4.0.21

This is with the following hardware;

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 mobo
Intel i7 920 @ 3.8GHz
Corsair 6GM XMS3 RAM
Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 3D
Tangent Wave
4 drive 4TB RAID 0 (535MB/s read/write)

I'm seriously considering getting a 6-core (980x) i7 and overclocking that to 4GHz. I'm surprised Jose can only get 21fps half-debayer at 4.2GHz (as I'm getting 16 at 3.8GHz and 4 cores), so I want to test that out for myself to see if I can get 24fps. Even if it doesn't I take it that this will still dramatically increase caching and rendering right??

Hope you're all well

Hi John!.

I have installed 256.02 without problems, but no speed gain...

Respect i980x, i have a oc to 4.2Ghz and with half good I can get only 21fps at 4k 16/9. With 4.5K wS I can get 23.5. Maybe i have something wrong here... but no real time with half debayer.

saludos,

Jose Lomeña
