GROUP BUY - TVLogic VFM-055A onboard monitor

Yeah, Nicolas would it be possible to delay the cut off date until after Cinegear? It would be great to hear some reviews of it.

TVLogic has agreed to extend the Group Buy until next Friday (June 8th) if that is the collective wish. They do not want to upset those who have signed up expecting a May 31st finish.

In regards to the viewing angle comment earlier, this is what has been explained to me by TVLogic:

A narrower viewing angle before color shifting is an inherent limitation when using the OLED display compared to the LCD display on the 58W. The 160 degree viewing angle listed in the specs is a "maximum angle of view where you can still identify the image but not the angle where the color shift happens." However, TVLogic wish to remind you that the OLED display provides "much better color saturation, accuracy and higher contrast ratio" compared to earlier models. The OLED also requires less power so the monitor stays "30% cooler and can last about twice longer with the same battery than the VFM-058W."

I encourage those who are visiting Cinegear to find the 55A monitor and make their own mind up on the display quality. Their official booth is #D300 but I hear the 55A will be on display at several booths. I invite those going to take photos and video of the monitor and share here.

If I may add my personal opinion, when I tested the 55A, I did not encounter any difficulty with a narrower viewing angle or color shifting. Then again, I did not actively seek it out. Even though I prefer an EVF, I often find the need for a color accurate onboard monitor. Over the years, this has boiled down to a choice of Transvideo, SmallHD and TVLogic. Having started my career in Europe, Transvideo was around when we had video taps on Arricam's and XTR's, and I became used to them being the go-to brand.

When HD appeared, I was a fan of the Astro Design onboards but they were only available from certain UK rental houses and phased out of popularity. SmallHD have come a long way in the quality of their monitors, and I commend them on that. However, I have often encountered inaccurate color representation which prevents me from trusting them as a DP reference onboard. From what I have experienced, TVLogic monitors have solidified their position as the AC's choice, especially, but not limited to, Alexa setups.

I have never had one fail on me and they seem to be a staple of rental houses. For me, the OLED version marks the next step to becoming a DP reference monitor I can trust.

With a 24"+ studio monitor, I believe viewing angle is of major importance, considering how many sets of eyes wish to squeeze in to see the image. For an onboard 5" that is for my eyes only, a viewing angle that doesn't equal the 58W doesn't really make a difference to me. Just my 2¢.

Thanks for extending the deadline! I wonder if there’s a way to promote this group buy at Cinegear? Anyone have any ideas?

Was anyone able to check out this monitor at Cinegear?

Also curious about the older TvLogic monitors, which ACs seem to swear by: are they able to desqueeze 2x anamorphic and can they display Alexa metadata?

Last couple days on the GB extension. Hopefully those who wanted to check out the 55A at Cinegear were able to do so. If you discovered anything new or have an opinion on the viewing angle, please share here.

Otherwise, I will stand by my original assertion that this is an awesome color-accurate monitor from a company that has one the best reputation for on-camera monitors on top tier film and commercial productions.

Game of Thrones set, TVLogic monitors on an Alexa and C300

To clarify, I am not sponsored in any way by TVLogic, I have no personal gain in setting up this GB and my comments are my own independent thoughts.

The GB has ended. Shame we didn't get more people involved, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Still think those who signed up have got a good deal.

The participant names have been passed to AbelCine and there will be a message sent out shortly with information on how to pay.

These monitors have come down to $999 at B&H? Is that because the lack of reviews? Still extremely little out there...

What was the price before?

They started at about $1500usd, then were $1350 for a while if I recall correctly. Now they're $1k, and they're still little info about there. I've read that they're fairly color accurate, but can't hold up to the 058 in terms of sharpness.

I've been thinking of investing, but you know the Canadian premium of 1.3x+ all too well.

I bought this monitor when the price dropped to $800, and a recent firmware update added a great sharpness adjustment AC's would love; much like the 058. However now TVLogic have released an LCD version of the monitor too which is interesting.

SmallHD has really brought it with the Cine7 and 702Touch though, so I think it's still a tough call.
