  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy - SmallHD 702 Series Monitor

Anyone have luck trying to order accessories at the discount? No discount was showing up for me for the 700 series sunhood or Dtap to LP-E6?

So SmallHD is going to stop selling hundreds of units because someone was bitching?

SmallHD is still a very small company. Building relationships just to distribute your products, all of your products, on a global stage is important to maintain. Group Buys can pressure the profit margin of brick & mortar and internet based retailers occasionally in a negative fashion. Which is also why Group Buys must end at a specific time, in this case November 4th in a few days. If this discount went on forever they would need to find a way to lower prices further across the board and in stores which would lower the profits made by everybody involved and might not be sustainable considering demand and manufacturing costs.

Group Buys are tricky in so many ways. In this case, this one has worked very well and many are getting a pretty high quality product for a nice discount. Kudos to Chris on this one. From a Mod perspective we are watching Group Buys more closely these days for a lot of reasons. Some have gone south, some are "against the rules", and some are just weird. The good news is in the case of this Group Buy it's a product and company we are familiar with.

Also, to the point made about Vitec I read earlier. Despite a few comments I've read, they are far from an evil company. In fact, in many ways for some they have been the "angel" they were hoping for. Think about companies and products we know and use on a daily basis. Such as Paralinx, Teradek, SmallHD, Anton Bauer, LitePanels, OConnor, Sachtler, etc. Some of those brands are literally industry standards and have been for a long while. Vitec has provided a financial backbone to help those companies to further innovate and advance with a bit more freedom and in the case of SmallHD the small team developing and creating the products are still the SmallHD that came up in 2009 with the somewhat ground breaking DP1 display. There are products that come to market that are well into 7 figures of R&D these days. It's difficult for startups to maintain their edge without the support of an entity like Vitec.

Back to SmallHD, I'm reminiscing a bit here. Before crowdfunding was crowdfunding they launched the DP1 successfully. I wrote an article long ago on a DSLR rig I was using on studio productions. I was one of the earliest SmallHD supporters:

The funny thing is those batteries are dead as door nails, but that DP1 still actually works. SmallHD has developed much higher quality displays since and I have a feeling we'll be seeing a few surprises from them in the future.

Anywho. Back to research'n away into the late night I go.

Thanks Phil for addressing that.

@Will, group buys can sometimes be tricky when companies have distributors. SmallHD is an amazing company and I want their relationship with us REDUSERS to continue and not be tainted by our community trying to use this GB as leverage for bigger discounts.

Better get those orders in guys. Group buy closing soon!

Same issue. Not the end of the world, but thought at least the sunhood would receive the discount as it's specific to the 702.
 
Mine arrived: DOA. Did we buy B stock or refurbished? It looks refurbished or used. Not happy, shipped a day late, arrived 2 days late, and doesn't work when we need it. Bummed.

I was about to finally place an order but the sunhood won't change price even after the code is active. I remember that it was stated that all 700 series accessories will be eligible for a GB discount but it's not the case right now.

Already placed my order. I figure the 20% discount is great as is. If the discount could be applied to the hood accessory before it ships to save $14... that's just a cherry on top. Thanks again Chris.
