  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY: Hive 200-C

"Will they ship to Germany as well?"

Yes Martin we can arrange that, of course there will be some shipping at VAT costs that are not factored in to the discount, but we are happy to work with Abel to help with this.

How is this fixture rated in terms of moisture? Could it be used in a room that has the potential for condensation (ie a bathroom with the shower running)

This is not a problem the light handles moisture and is designed to be IP 34 so it is weather resistant if not entirely weather proof. To give you a sense of the IP rating system here is one of my favorite charts:

In general though for overall life of the unit we recommend covering from direct water whenever possible and since they stay relatively cool you can literally throw a plastic back over the body as long as you leave it open on the bottom for air flow.

Scott - Part of my PM to Jon is a request to include the IP rating in the manual. His team is working on it now.

EDIT: YIKES!!! I'm definitely getting slower at typing as I get older.

So I am getting some more technical and kit question through PM and I figured I would answer them here for all to see. First one from Brian was about using the Hornet 200-C in a lantern set up. Yes we do that!

If you remove the Reflector from the fixture you get a 180 degree open face single source lamp perfect for filling all kinds of soft boxes from many different manufactures using our 4pt

or 8pt

speedrings.

This is especially useful to have a lantern with all the color changing controls of our Omni-Color C-series, I'm a big fan of this setup.

Jon

PS I almost forgot we call it the Hornet's Nest

Jon,

Very nice! I have both the ARRI 200 and 400 Pocket Par Lighthouse kits that I have been using for lanterns.
Your last point - about changing the color temp - is especially useful in this application.
Adding a gel to a hot HMI in a lantern is problematic on so many fronts for obvious reasons.
I will be looking forward to improving the degree of control and ease of setup.

Nick - I'll be joining this GB but will be taking my time to figure out details (#, aks, etc)

What is the brightness/output comparison between this and a DS1? Given that they are filling a very similar role, and are close in size, this is the A/B comparison I'm most interested in.

Shawn,

So I will try not to give my opinion here more than I have to and instead just give you the stats that I can on both products to be as fair as possible to the DS1. Having said that I think the fundamental difference between the two products is one of optics. The DS1 is a multi light array, this means multiple shadows and it cannot easily be converted into a wide variety of off the shelf optics. Hornet 200-C can be converted into a fresnel, leko and a wide variety of softboxes, etc. This of course may not matter for your applications. Below are two videos on how the optics on the C-Series work, the videos are about the 100-C but all of it applies directly to the Hornet 200-C:

DS1 - $2500 (list price)
HORNET - $2100 (list price)

DS1 - 140 Watts
HORNET - 140 Watts

DS1 - 334 FC at 3M (10FT)
HORNET - 400 FC at 3M (10FT)

DS1 - 20 Degree Beam
HORNET - 20 Degree Beam

DS1 - 2.8lbs
HORNET - 3lbs

Jon I'm curious if the ongoing work on LED means that Hive is putting plasma out to pasture? I have and love the Wasp 250 and am curious if this is still an area of development.

Hi DJ,

Plasma is still an important part of Hive's product line! We firmly believe it is the absolute best light source for high speed imaging and for creating the fullest spectrum fixed daylight source. We actually just re-designed our Wasp 1000 unit primarily for the needs of our high speed customers and released it at NAB this year and we do plan on continuing development on the plasma product lines.

Our goal at Hive has always been to create high quality energy efficient hard light, a part of the market we felt the LED panel was neglecting, to that end we will keep pushing to innovate with our Omni-color LED round arrays and our Plasma technology to try to bring exciting products to market.

Jon,
Thank you! That was way more thorough than I was expecting. Question on 'HORNET - 400 FC at 3M (10FT)', is that with the reflector that ships with it?

And is there yet a dual V mount solution to power this in field with 14.4v bricks?

Shawn,

Yes the 400FC at 3M (10Ft) is with the reflector that ships with the kit in this group buy:

https://hivelighting.com/products/hornet-200-c-par-spot-omni-color-led-light/

Yes we made a Y-Cable and dual battery plate solution for both Vmount and Gold (AB) mount batteries

HLS2C-DBPK-VM-1.jpg

it mounts so that a battery goes on each side of the light kinda like a beer helmet...

and now for another fun video featuring jon talking, where you can see how to mount a battery plate:

So it seems like from the photometrics the Hornet is comparable, but slightly less powerful, to a standard Arri 650 Plus tungsten fixture or Arri L-7C correct?
