Group Buy - Formatt-Hitech Firecrest ND Filters

Yep My 1.8 has a green shift too. not too happy about that. Let me know what they say for you.

Just contacted Hotrod.

I contacted Formatt Hitech directly, haven't got an answer yet, but would it be better to contact Hot Rod in this matter?

We need everyone that has a bad 1.8 to send me an email with their address and phone number for replacement.

From Formatt-

"It was an unfortunate coating issue from an older production run and ended up getting out the door rather than back to our factory for destruction."

For the record Formatt and Hotrod were super on it. I got a response and return shipping label in about 20 min. Great customer service in this situation.

Great response!

I have a tiny chip in my 4x5.65 0.9, anyone know if there's a way to repair?

Shows up as a tiny white spec on images from wide lens.

Depends on the size of chip. A filter with a chip in it wouldn't have passed QC, but if you've damaged it on a shoot depending on depth it can likely be polished out.

Contact Formatt directly and let the know the situation.

I've contacted them and I'm gonna send back the 1.2 and the 1.8. Hopefully they will see the large difference. Though, the UK service seem to be without contact with US, since I had to quote Ryan in order to get the information out about the bad 1.8s.

I'm also curious how much of a difference is actually within normal ranges. I would hope Phil could chime in on this, you've seen my test images. If I combine a 0.6 and a 0.9 it will change the colors quite a bit. I've actually managed to work without NDs before, mainly because I've done post motion blur or worked under Swedish winters meaning much less light, so I'm not so familiar with different ND brands and types. Phil, is it normal that if I put two NDs together they will change the colors compared to without, how much is acceptable with these NDs?

There are numerous reasons I don't stack NDs, this is one of them.

(I'm on REDuser in a helicopter at the moment)

So sad to see that some DP's can find a difference between the NDs , especially with such brands. Will I have to check all ND's now? Not sure I can send it back to US from Russia if I want some replacement.

Alright, good answer. And you certainly have another level of Reduser-dedication hahaha

Are you sad we find differences? :tongue_smilie: isn't that a good thing, keeps quality being quality. For your own sake I would suggest checking. As mentioned by Ryan there seems to be something off with the ND 1.8 specifically so if that is tinted way off, at least send that one. If the others seem to be working fine you don't have to send them. Also... I'm not a DP :001_smile:

I feel sad about this company, lost my trust...

Test checking the filters. I would definitely love to see less color shift on the 1.5, 1.8, and 2.1 with the 1.8 being the worst.

Experiencing the same exact thing. Returned my 1.8 for a replacement and got a new one with the same color problem. Pretty lame.

Did you want to try my 95mm screw-on and compare them against yours? I think it would be interesting to compare multiple sets to see how much variance there is.

There will always be some amount of variance. The question is how much variance is there and do people find it acceptable. Even the amount one person is willing to accept will vary from person to person. Not sure if you have ever shot 3D or VR. They have to deal with subtle color difference between two camera sensors (same made/model), lenses and filters. I was surprised the first time I shot 3D how much difference there was.

To be clear, not defending the quality of the filters here.

Had a great experience exchanging a filter directly with Formatt. Geerish was very accommodating and went above and beyond with the customer service.

Thanks for your help Phil Holland!
