  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy - Formatt-Hitech Firecrest ND Filters

Thanks Phil for setting this up. How thick are these? Aka specialty MB work for drones or gimbles with finicky boxes. Also do they do a Drop In for any of those Polas?

Thanks Mark.

The Firecrest NDs are 4mm thick. Specifically I recommend this thickness, though they offer 2mm. The reason why is moderately simple. The 2mm rectangular filters can warp under the pressure of some filter tray springs which can interestingly enough effect image quality, especially on the wide side of things.

The 4mm has the thickness to not warp in that typically situation. Same if you are taping the filter on.

I don't have specific details on thickness of each of the other types, but I can likely get it.

I think they have some drop ins. I'll ask. What size are you looking for?

I've been using these for the better part of two years now on Epic Dragon and Weapon for the last 7 or so months. Done all sorts of things in various types of matte boxes. (My main box is the Chrosziel Cine.1 MB565, also for light weight I use the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom and I still occasionally pop on my OConnor O-Box WM).

I haven't broken a filter yet that wasn't an optical clear, so that's good news :) I go through about 10 optical clears a year it seems. Went through 3 of them shooting Forged in 4 days.

You make a damn fine point here Phil!

Could I please add to my order 1 x 4x5.65" optically clear? It's bound to come in handy at some point.

OK, you got me. Please put me down for:

1X of 0 (Clear/Flat), 0.3, 0.9, 1.2, 2.1 in 4x5.65" a total of 5 filters. Shipping to NC in the USA. Thanks!

Quick update everybody. Looks like the group buy has been pretty successful and I just wanted to fill you in from where things go from here.

The group buy will end on June 1st of next week and at that moment I'll be emailing or PM'ing you guys with instructions.

Which leads to the first bit of news:
phfx_hotrodCameraLogo.jpg

We have a fair deal of orders to process and Hot Rod Cameras will be who you send payment to. Once you send payment to HRC Formatt will ship from either LA or UK depending on where you are.

Some other news. If you are a California resident you will be subject to our state's taxes. However! Illya has agreed to do the California 4% teleproduction sales tax for those who qualify. You'll just need to fill out the exemption form and all that. For many of you this won't be something new.

I'm heading out of town for a couple days to get some R&R, but I'll be back Monday night to head on any big questions. Might check in occasionally while the girlfriend isn't looking :)

This all should go very smooth because there's been constant communication with Formatt and expected orders throughout this. Hopefully everything will ship quickly. There's a couple oddball filter size requests that might take a week or two longer, but standard sizes are indeed all in stock and ready to go.

Have a good weekend.

Hi Phil,

Can you add my order to your GB list.

all 4x5.65"

1 x 0.3 firecrest ND
1 x 0.6 firecrest ND
1 x 0.9 firecrest ND
1 x 1.2 firecrest ND
1 x 1.8 firecrest ND
1 x Circular Polarizer
3 x Optical Clear

I haven't received my Scarlet-W yet, but I'm wondering if I should replace my ND filters. I currently have a set of Tiffen Waterwhite IRND. From reading it doesn't seem like the new REDs need IR filtration, so I'm just wondering if using an IRND on the Scarlet-W is going to have some negative consequences? Maybe I should jump on these Formatt NDs instead?

Phil, thanks for setting this up! I'll take:

Firecrest ND 1X .3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 in 4X5.6 size
Circular Polarizer 1X in 4X5.6

82mm 1X of each .3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8

I know Sam over at Hot Rod

Thanks!

For anyone who needs a filter box for their incoming filters, I spent a couple of days scouring the internet and local camera stores to find something with the right dimensions, and eventually came across the Pelican Storm IM2075, which is pretty much perfect for a full set of 4x5.65" NDs along with a few grads, diffusions and a pola:

And if you don't need quite as much room, the Pelican 1300 gives you something very close but is a little more compact. I'm pretty stoked that I haven't had to have a custom flight case made just to carry a few filters.

Hey Phil, thank you for setting this up.

I'd like:

4x5.65": Firecrest ND .3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.8

EU Buyer

Thank you
