  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY - eMotimo ST4 + Dana Dolly

Have had a busy spring so haven't really used the emotimo a lot since the GB, but it's been solid this far!

I've mounted an arca-swiss-plate to the side of my camera and I think it makes a difference in stability of the setup.

it would be awesome if there was possible to trigger videorecording from the ps4-controller and incredible to be able to be able to start/stop recording in a programmed videomove!

Yes. Yes it would :)

Hello All, it's Mike Hall, the Dana Dolly guy. Thank you for all the feedback. We should have a stabilizer solution out in July that I think you all will like. I think we came up with a solution that will be solid, and cost effective. We had about 4x the orders that we normally get from NAB, so it has taken us this long to just get caught up on orders; now we can get back to the fun stuff, Inventing! We've been doing tests with a 24' screw together eMotimo setup, and if you have suggestions/comments/complaints/solutions I'd love to hear them. Mike@danadolly.com is my email. I appreciate you all, thank you very much, Mike

Hey Mike, really excited for this ! Wasn't even expecting it. :)

Confirmed Start/Stop/Pre-Roll working with Jetpack and Base Expander today.

We have been working with the developers at Dragonframe to unlock the real-time device capability. Watch a 10 minute or so video with keyframeing in Dragonframe 4's real time interface with the eMotimo spectrum ST4:

Quick Benefits:
1) Load and Save moves and scenes - as many as you want in a regular file
2) Dragonframe runs on Mac, PC, and Ubunto for those that like to be different.
3) Keyframes - Spectrum ST4 natively handles 9 keyframes right on box. Other manufactures software is limited to 10 at last check. DF can add an unlimited keyframes per axis (1 per frame if you want).
4) Export / Import from Maya (native Dragonframe capability), or other text based formats like CSV.
5) Future real-time control of DMX lighting with the spectrum (we will see how far we can push)

Things you need:
  • Dragonframe - free to try for 30 days, $300 license.
  • eMotimo USB serial cable - connect from USB to the ST4's I/O port. - $35 or so

Timeline -
We are in early test and knocking out bugs and adding functionality for this feature now. We will be running through testing and building out cables over the next month or so. We expect to have this interface fully tuned and released by end of May.

Any update?

Any update?

Sure, we have moved forward and knocked out all known bugs with this interface which makes it quite usable.

- You can plan create complex moves in Dragonframe and run them on the ST4.
- There is no limit to the number of keyframes
- Loading and saving moves is easy and file based
- If you have a DMX lighting controller, it will synchronize with playback of the spectrum's live moves.

For those of you who are looking for a guide, it is out here Dragaonframe 4.1
https://support.emotimo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002057012

The only feature that is not in there, that I want in there is live scrubbing of moves at variable rates. We do have to revisit and check software stops and limits. This is not a showstopper though and will improve over time.

Happy Friday!

Hi Phil, great post.

In your experience, what's the best way to mount the DSMC2 body to the ST4's L bracket? I'm using the DSMC quick release platform pack. Cheers.

"Best" would likely be bolting straight to the L bracket as that is the lowest COG and a firm connection.

However, I am using the RED mini quick release on an Arca long bracket, sort of acts like a dovetail and I can still pop the camera off in a jiffy. That's what works best for me.

Hello Brian,
I just noticed that whatever preset I choose (or was last used) on the "Live Motion Modes" affects the performance of the motor during a "Programmed Shot" execution. My assumption was that these modes (including the Photo tools modes) are all independent of each other. Is my assumption correct and is there something in the settings I need to turn off?

I see that you use the DSMC V Lock I/O for auto record trigger with eMotimo's RED cable. According to eMotimo's website, it has to be connected to the SYNC port.
So this cable and setup won't work with Teradek/OMOD XLR module, since that one doesn't have a sync port?

Small update for the crew using this kit.

I've been testing the DD+eMotimo ST4 combo w/ eMotimo's upcoming Start/Stop/Pre-Roll settings and cable for RED DSMC2 cameras.

I was trying to figure out a solution to this. Up until now, I've been mounting directly to the L-bracket. However, it's a pain to go from different plates when trying to be agile during a shoot. I also really dislike the single mounting point as it lended to my camera skewing a bit when adjusting the follow focus to different lenses.

Phil, think I can get away with an ARRI standard dovetail on the L-bracket that's provided or is there a better solution so I don't have to change mounting solutions so often?

You can certainly do that. I went with a lighter weight solution so I could tackle heavier lenses when needed.
