  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY - eMotimo ST4 + Dana Dolly

Hey Phil,
Any possibility of picking up JUST the Dana Dolly at the discounted price? I have had my ST4 for almost a year now and absolutely love it. Brian and his team are AMAZING and are constantly working and adding new features to the ST4.
I have been running it on a 2ft/4ft Slider shark but need a little more length at this point.

Hmmm -- If I'm counting it right, that's 20 -- Tier 3!

You indeed have used those fingers and toes correctly!

We are at 20 folks, that's Tier 3 with a 20% discount, which in my mind makes this sort of a no brainer.

We're 10 away from the crazy Tier 4 25%/20% discount and still in the early days of the Group Buy. If we hit 30 during the next week I'll strongly suggest to Brian and Mike that we should start processing orders at the top tier, which will honestly make life easier for all of us who are inbound to NAB :)

Updated the list.

JUST the Dana Dolly

I'll ask again, but this is/was intended as a primarily eMotimo ST4 GB w/ the DD integration. Crazy things happen though when we get to higher tiers for sure, so maybe.

Understandable, I just figured I would ask. Thanks for organizing this Phil.

Neato, didn't even know anyone was doing this until you showed us (you can see the ST4 / remote on the sled).

This falls under the same path of integration to the Kessler Shuttle Dolly. We think a customer purchased and adapted the kit with some machine skills. Grips aren't afraid to drill some holes and mount thing up! While this looks like it works ok for this sort of run, we would definitely have some advice for keeping the belts runs perfectly in line with the exit pulley from the motor. As you get closer to the ends, the tension will increase as the angle of the belt changes. So, clever adaptation, but likely some compromises on using the full length of track in it's current form.

We are getting more requests for more integrations, with other companies. We keep track internally and if the voices from the customers are great enough in number to make developing a kit worth it, we will. As always we are stoked to work with Mike Hall and Dana Dolly as his openness and willingness to integrate has been a refreshing change. This collaboration has really created a super simple drop in kit that enables you to get shooting fast and simply.

Also, its been a couple days since the totals were updated, but as of this morning, I believe (and please correct me if I am wrong), we have reached Tier 3. For all those that were contingent on getting there, I am glad you are in! Phil, check the math and please update whenever your hair is not on fire (not sure he ever slows down).

Makes sense. I don’t mind investing in a Dana Dolly. I would just have to sell my Rhino slider with motion. I bought that but I never use it due to low weight capacity. Hopefully, we hit the fourth tier before I put my name down. If you need a closer look at the dutti dolly, let me know. I don’t live on the west coast, but we could figure something out.

Alright, this is too badass not to jump on. I’m in for both the ST4 + the DD.

I’ve been looking at a Dana Dolly kit for a while - and the motion control mixed with the focus sold me. So much for not making any new investments for a few months. :)

Thanks Brian for the info re:upside down mounting. One more question, what about doing this on an incline? Say a 25 degree slope? I haven’t worked with belted Systems before, but wondering how slopes impact the load rating.

I ran this underslung and inclined a few times. Handles it like a boss. Only thing is you need to get creative mounting the moco head to keep it horizontal. A solid Ball head seems to do the trick. At NAB last year they mentioned different motors are in the works. High torque....High speed etc. This is all done with the motor that came with it.

Yep, standard working mode for me is is first level the track and then if needed adjust the ball head, especially if the architecture in the scene doesn't happen to be level.

I keep a magnetic level in my kit to help with that.

Already have my Dana Dolly, but put me down for the ST4!

Might have already been mentioned, but how long of a track can this be used on?

Added. Comes with 11 feet of cable for a 10 foot track length.

Great. Should be enough for most projects. Is it possible to go beyond that with custom cable options, say 25ft?

Yep. Someone had the same question earlier. Brian's answer:

Depends on belt length of course. There is no technical limit by software, but we are belt driven so you need you length of the run + about 1 foot for belt wrap around motor and end mounts. Belt slack and tension does become a factor with longer runs so there are some considerations based on your move speeds and payload. We sell belt by the foot to help with the longer setups.

How much control do you have over the keyframes for complex moves? Can you set keyframes to linear or smooth (bezier) and is there a software visual interface (tablet or desktop) planned in the future for editing moves?

I'm VERY interested in this too!

Can I ask what brand/model mount is pictured attaching the eMotimo to the Dana Dolly? Any experience using the portable track offered by Dana Dolly, and if rigid enough would this be something that could be included in group buy? Any need for additional Fiz motors?
Can focus be programmed for travel in direction of subject for repeated moves? What is the usual setup/program time once experienced?

I am interested in ST4 and DD but no experience with this type of equipment.

Thanks

Any need for additional Fiz motors?

Can't speak to the rest but as a fellow novice I was looking into this myself and will piggyback on your question.

As I understand, the ST4 has two motor ports and allows for 4 axis of control (with pan/tilt built into the unit). If motorizing the slider, you'll use one of the motor ports for the slider which leaves one remaining for the FIZ. So using two FIZ units requires sacrificing slider control.

If you need more than 1 FIZ function and motor Dolly control (e.g. I have a shot in mind that requires repeatable slider movement + pan + zoom + focus), you'll have to use an external device to control one of them?

Please correct if I'm wrong as I'd love to get away with programming everything on the Emotimo, e.g. is there a way to override/bypass the tilt and use Slide/Pan/Zoom/Focus (with two FIZ motors?) If there is, please put me in for a second motor!
