  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

The truth is, it will cost over $800 to put together the boom pole rig you see being used on "American Hustle" on page one of this thread.

When I get out of the hospital I'll make a video showing how to put together a professional China Ball rig for way less than $800. There's absolutely no reason to spend anywhere near that much. And whether you make a $25 DIY rig or invest more for a professional rig, the light quality is the same and that's what is most important.

Hey Brandon,
Just wanted to say how much I admire your attitude and tenacity, keep fighting my friend.
Aloha
A

Thanks for your support and patience, my friend.

Does any one have the time to list the items I need to make a "cheap" china ball rig (with no controller).

I have a spool of Variable Strips. That/s all I have. Please list the other items I will need, and a link to where they can be purchased.

Thank you!

I stand by this statement, until someone can prove me otherwise:

"The truth is, it will cost over $800 to put together the boom pole rig you see being used on "American Hustle" on page one of this thread."

Again, you must put together the same rig he's using in the film "American Hustle". Not a painter's pole, some AA batteries and a 2 liter coke bottle instead of a proper lantern rig.

Thanks!

Carey, I'm sure just like me you have a Chimera lantern or 2. I have AB batteries for general use, camera, lights, if i need to run sound gear all day (and not wanna be swapping AA batteries etc) & some $5 8A ebay dimmers. I use my Chimeras in static situations and stick on a old boom (who's internal mic cable has gone bad) when I need to somebody to run with it. For me it's not a separate solution.

Thanks Jamon, but I really don't have a lot of extra boom poles and batteries laying around etc.

I was interested in building a China Ball rig from the ground up. That's why I got in this group buy 2 years ago. That's the only reason I bought 2 variable spools and 2 controllers.

Now, without the controllers, I'm trying to make do with just the light strips. It's not as simple as people make it out to be.

I will just mount my Ice Light to the end of a boom pole, have it placed just out of frame and get similar results.

Does anyone want to buy two variable strips of these lights from me?

I'm letting go of this whole idea.

about time u chill out Carey, you obviously haven't let go.

This is a joke right? You of all people are complaining about a GB that is struggling? And you actually said "this is not how I do business"? Too funny!

First of all, I have to use my Ice Light because I never got my controllers. I'm not using a broom stick or a painter's pole, thanks. A china Ball rig, with your light spools, sends 9600 lumens in 360°. So, really, less than half of that is reaching the talent. An Ice light sends the light in a 70° spread. Apples and Oranges.

Keep fighting your disease and get well. I don't need to be told how a product I paid for 2 years ago is superior to mine when I never even received that product. I was asking the advice from the community. So far I'm getting vague responses about painter's poles and stuff lying around the garage. Sorry, this is not how I do business.

Sorry, but the group buy I created, that struggled, was only one of MANY other successful ones.

And I was constantly complaining to the manufacturer about their terrible business practices, apologizing to the GB members and DEMANDING that the manufacturer refund people's money. You cannot compare the two. Go back and read my posts. I was always looking out for the GB members and publicly criticizing the business practices of the manufacturer.

I am over the fact that I will never see my money again from this GB. I don't need to chill out. I even genuinely said he can keep my money and donate it toward his surgery.

I came on today asking the community for help on what I need to purchase to build a decent China Ball rig.

I said "that's not how I do business" meaning, I don't build $20 DIY China Ball rigs and take them on a professional set. In fact, you can't do it for $20.

When I said "I'm letting go of this whole idea", Poi Boy, I meant I was letting go of the idea of trying to build a China Ball rig. I meant that I decided to go in another direction.

No need to get on my case, I'm a major contributor to this forum. I have helped a lot of people save a lot of money.

I'm sorry Brandon is ill. I empathize with him. I pray to God he gets better.

Am I upset that I lost money? Not if it's going toward a good cause.

I was just trying to salvage my China Ball rig idea. I decided to just let the idea go. Is there anything wrong with that?

Dude, you DO need to chill. I say this because many of your china ball post have barbs like, "(with no controller), (I don't have to go into why we don't have this ability), (or not released in this case)" that are directed at Brandon. Then you act all indignant, with a "who me "? attitude by saying things like 'I pray to God he gets better." If you are letting it go, then let it go !
Also, not sure who you are referring to about real names, mine is in every post.

Poi Boy, or A, or whatever your name is, get off my back. You are continuing to fan the flames with your sarcasm and negativity. Maybe it's YOU who needs to chill. Mahalo.

Just pointing out your flames Carey Lee, learn to read.

I need to learn to read? You're the one who's reading into things. Now you want to insult me? it's ironic how you're telling me to let it go, when you won't. You are a f#%ing hypocrite. That's not a sarcastic insult, it's a fact. I don't know you so I can't insult you. Learn to read? That would be a good insult if it were true. Try not to be such a hypocrite. And change your profile name to your real name, while you're at it.

Carey, please chill out. The group buy started with LED strips, and everyone had the option, and I still believe they still have the option to receive the LED strips they paid for. When Brandon came up with the idea of the controller, he did clearly state it was something in development and doesn't exist. I wouldn't say this group buy was a failure. Sure it's taken quite a bit of time to receive the controllers. If someone is impatient, like myself, I just go out and find alternatives to hold me over. You guys all work in film and probably own thousands of dollars worth of camera stuff, just go out and buy another LED controller in the mean time. Sure you paid for something already to do it's job, why pay more money for the same thing?? Well, because you need it now. I'm not here rushing Brandon even though I paid for controllers, I just went out and bought different controllers in the mean time. Do I still want the controller? Of course I do, it's a different tool that what is out there, and it does jobs other controllers can not do.

As for you Carey, getting all impatient with the paper lantern rig blue prints, dude, LED strips are CLEARLY DIY, meaning Do It Yourself. If you wanted something professionally made, call up Litegear(they do custom work) and tell them you want a proper paper lantern rig. Tell them you want it under 600$ and they will laugh at you. You sound very unprofessional when you get all up in arms about small things. If you are a calm professional, tell your professional gaffer to make the paper lantern rig, as he should because I'm sure as a gaffer he/she has some DIY skills. That's why, as a gaffer, I carry LED strips in my kit, so when the cinematographer comes up with a problem, I can build something custom to work out the issue.

Oh, and one last thing. Google is your friend. Before wasting time, always try the google machine to search for what you are looking for! Google has helped me find solutions to many problems, without me bothering other people.

Thanks Corey, I'm chilling. I didn't care for the insults. I can count how many times I've gotten into it with someone on this forum on one hand. Maybe I had a bad day and didn't appreciate being attacked when I was just looking for some answers. No worries. I'm good. Thanks again. Take care and good luck in your career.

I want to publicly apologize to Brandon, Po Boi and anyone else who felt I had a bad attitude. I've been working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week and the stress must have gotten to me.

I hope we can put this behind us.

Thank you.

By the way, I finally got the chance to try out these light spools, and I have to say, controller or no controller, these lights give off the most beautiful light I have ever seen in my life. I've been working with HMI's, Kino's, Tungsten etc., for my entire career, and I have never seen this quality of light before. I'm blown away. Amazing technology.
