  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

I was told on 12/9/15 that I was in the next batch going out on 12/10/15 but I haven't seen them. Now I'm leaving for 3 months and need them shipped to a different address. If I email you the new address, Brandon, can I actually take delivery of these lights??? And according to a post over a month ago, the controllers should be available now too?

Email me the new address. I'll be back at my workstation tonight and will look up your order. I've been out of town for the holidays.

Hey there. I just wanted to check in. Not complaining but we did order these back in 2014 and now it's 2016. I told myself at the year mark I would start considering selling these. Do you have an accurate shipping time and/or is there anybody interested in buying my package?

I can't exactly remember what I ordered because it's been a while. I believe I ordered 2 complete packages of variable light strips with whatever accessories were offered.

Michael, the lights have been shipping for almost a year. I'm about a week away from having a finished sample controller in hand. I'm as eager to get this done as anyone because I took an $18k PayPal working capital loan to get us up to the minimum number of units to make this happen and the payments are killing me. There are some nice extras being thrown in with the controller though to make up for the delays... :)

Cool, thanks for the response Brandon. I'll hang tight then. Looking forward to checking these out. Thanks for the extra work seeing this though.

I've been busy creating all sorts of LED fixtures and have been posting my progress on my instagram page here: https://www.instagram.com/bradfilm/

One thing i've been working on has been creating small housings for the strip lights, unfortunately the plastics that i've tried have all melted because of the heat. Most recently I tried putting them into flexible plastic tubing made for plumbing. While it doesn't physically melt to the point of breaking or deforming, it does smoke which I imagine won't go over so well on set. Does anyone have any recommendations for tubing or other material that can work as housings for the LEDs that will withstand the heat they produce?

Here's a picture of it: https://flic.kr/p/Ctw1ur

Thanks!
BRAD

Very cool! Followed you.

A fully charged V-mount battery, which is what I'm guessing you are using to power these, is around 16V. The strips are for 12V power sources. Heat can be an issue when you put more than 12V into the strips. I have about 20 rigs made with corrugated plastic and I haven't had any heat problems even running them off batteries, but they are not sealed up like the picture you posted. That will make things hotter. I will have a way to regulate battery power soon. I should have the details late this week or early next.

Next week I will have some really cool Kino flo type rigs to show you guys. Really awesome stuff.

As for the controller, the software rewrite is due to be done on Friday. I should have the sample unit on Monday or Tuesday. This is a new PCB design. We were about to have to discuss slashing frame rates or the number of channels, but then they had a breakthrough and suddenly the heat issues were solved. They are also throwing in a few surprises to make up for the delay...

Can't wait to get these. It's been a long journey.

Hope you're feeling better, Brandon.

Hmm interesting. I have some tekkeon batteries that do regulated voltage. I'll try those at 12v and see how it reacts. I'm VERY interested in your KINOFLO-like solutions. Pass that info along asap please.

EDIT: That did it. At 12v it does not get overly hot at all. This opens up a lot more options for housings but limits my ability to plug directly into v-mount batts etc. Let me know what kind of power regulating options there are.

Hi Brandon how are things?

Its been over a year now, maybe an update for us folks patiently waiting :)

You should be able to throw a resistor inline and still be able to plug into the 16 volt batts. I could do the calcs and send you the correct spec for the resistor.

Just checking in on this thread after months away. Happy to see you are still making this happen Brandon.

I am in for one whole set. Controller and maybe a couple of strips if I remember right. I won't even ask you to look it up right now. Just keep on pushing till this becomes reality.

I just got of Skype with the manufacturer. The CTO said they need a few more days to finish the software and will work through the weekend until it's done. They will ship it on Monday. This unit has passed all the stress tests without any heat problems at all, so that's a huge relief. 11 months ago I got the first prototype. It's been a long road, but it will be worth it.

Oh, and there are a few surprises that have been thrown in to make up for the delays. More on that as soon as I have this final sample in hand. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

I will be catching up on emails and PMs tonight and through the weekend.

Let's hope this is the one!

Stephen
