  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Budget CRI 95 LED Strip Lights

Question: How long do we want the cable on our D-tap to be? Get your vote in now...

According to the writing on the packet for the 5m reel, it seems like 5m is the maximum length that should be run in series.

Looking at the similar Lite Gear strips, a 5m reel might draw approximately 8 Amps.

This doesn't seem quite right. Each strip puts out a max of 2600 lumens which is the equivalent of about a 150 watt light bulb. Yet LEDs should pull a lot less power for this output (maybe 40 watts?). So, how could it pull 8 amps?

I'm not an electrician so I could be wrong.

That's 2600 lumen per metre. So 5 metres will be 13000 lumens! 8A at 12V = 96Watts.

I think a longer cable is better than short because we can always cut them down ourselves or coil them up, and it would make repairs easier too.

Maybe a 1m cable, certainly no shorter than 60cm, although I can envisage circumstances where even a 2m length or more could be useful e.g. powering a ceiling mounted panel from a battery on the floor!
But I suppose we could always use some sort of barrel extension cable for that.

If used with AC power supply will it still draw 8amps? That would draw more than an Arrilite 750.

Yes, still 8 Amps, BUT at 12Volts, so power used is 96 Watts. Power = Voltage (dc equivalent) x Current

An Arrilite 750 plus tungsten fixture draws 3.3 Amps at 230 Volts ac, or 6.8 Amps at 110 Volts ac but the power used is 750 Watts. So the power used is far less than the Arrilite 750.

Thank you

so that will mean running a 5 meter light of a single v-mount 160Wh won't work with the variable strip at max brightness. (its power limit is at 79W)
Will we need some kind of volt regulator on the v-mount? Mine is not working at 12v but at a range from 15v - 11v.

** nevermind, I'm guessing the output of the d-tap is 12v **

Possibly. It depends on the max current output of your batteries and whether they have over current protection. 8A is a lot of current and many batteries can't supply that.

Usually the output of a nominally 12V battery D-tap is unregulated and can be anything from 16.8V fully charged downwards.

Actually that's a good question for Brandon. What's the input dc voltage range of the strips?

I vote for at least a 3 ft power cable, better for battery placement

But instead of doing a D-tap ending it would be great to have a female ending so you can plug what ever extension, d-tap, cigar... calbe at the other end.

Pat

There will be lots of male and female barrel connectors in the Power Kit so people have lots of options in how they set things up.

Oh ok, I thought googling around a lot there were some D-tap at 12V so I assumed that was a standard. So if it is unregulated, I'll need to regulate that or find a 12V battery with lots of amps. I've seen some cheap ones that do 12v and 7amps, for around 30 euros.

I'd like a 3 meter cord. . . something about 10 feet.

I LOVE Patrick's idea of being able to use a cigarette lighter with this. I see car shots being a fairly common use for these strips.

A cigarette lighter adapter is included in the Power Kit.

Once you use this type of lighting in a car you will never want to use anything else...
