  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First of all, it was a great day today as I got my weapon woven delivered.
Have not had much time with it more then putting a lens on and shot some quick tests shots around the office. And the difference is very much there. I find it odd that it has not been discussed more. To me the improvement of picture quality is possibly just as much as a leap from MX to dragon as it is from dragon to weapon. Noise pattern is the big one. Far cleaner picture no doubt. I mean I had the 1.8 SSD´s so the speed of the minimags and what ever else was done makes a huge difference.

I did not get the screens I ordered in the delivery so only had an old EVF to play with. So I was trying to configure this thing and looked at the top handle and to me it´s a bit limiting that it´s only possible to mount so it sticks out in the back. It ruins it for big Vlocks etc. So I figure why not flip it around facing forward... (nothing that would work with the new screens mounted direct on the body but for other setups with big lenses and such it would put everything in better balance.

So I took my new little red tool and dissembled the handle and removed the two little pegs around the connector with a set of pliers.... flipped the connector around and viola. it works just as one could expect. Then I took the risk and tested it the other way around so the connects are actually mirrored / connecting the wrong way... well that works just as good.

So now possibly somebody from red can reply to this. But is there any short fusing risk of doing this? Or what are those little studs for, is it just for protecting the connector or is it bad for the camera to have the handle the other way around?

Then I was thinking it would be great to have some sort of top plate sitting on the handle. but there is not many screw holes on it.. but then there is the end rubber nob thing... again took the plyers and that things comes of and it´s a threaded end on the handle. So if some 3rd part accessory maker want to make an extra buck my advice would be to make some some sort of accessory plate that is fixated to the handle by these nob threads. preferably something that has 19mm rood mounts that sits on standard distance from lens center. then focus motors and such could hang from above and we could fit microphones and other stuff up there also, no?

Or we just continue to use that space inside the handle as the Camera Dep. weed stash :)

EDIT: Thanks for the input guys now I sent this model of to our CNC guy.

Short enough to clear battery.
Not a rubber grip but good enough lump to hold on to. that can have wide or slim is facing down / can be mounted 360 deg rotation.
Has red´s 4 holes distance between the 1/4 inch holes so monitor and such screws on fine.
Has a bunch of 3/8 threaded holes.
Has 2 mount points for RED rosettes.
Has 3 Arri standard mount points.

Flying out to LA for a shoot now but hopefully this little bit of metal is laying in my reception when I get back home in a week or so.

WC make a handle that can be rotated back, sideways and forwards and had threads on it.

Yes but it´s missing the button no? and it´s not included in the upgrade.

And secondly would you cross the boarder with that handle? the drugs would fall right out :)

Does anybody with a Weapon know if the old R1 top handle fits or have they changed the spacing alignment?

This is awsome!

Not only is the new handle a little hidden compartment. I just found out that with a little bit of brute force you can actually unscrew it from the "button / front / mount part" which means the handle can easily be replaced by stuff from third party or RED if they decide to do so.

The rubber handle is basically a metal tube seated with threads and "lockit". So it would be very easy for somebody to make anything like a metal handle with bolt holes, top 19mm rod mount etc or what ever wanted that could replace the current really nice, but not so multifunctional rubber handle.

Right on Bjorn!

You have been without a camera for a while and I know you will post some interesting tests!

True. had it for a few hours but i have no screen and I struggle with an old evf and the little side button panel thing. Still it really kicks as. I know how shitty the tungsten lights are in my office. With MX it was quite difficult to get enough exposure. With dragon things got a lot better. With weapon it´s like somebody brought their film lights. No joke I get good results even when closing down. Noise levels are so low so that I want to put grain on it. :)

That's great Bjorn. Personally while waiting for a top notch top plate solution I'm using an old Element Techinca cheese stick handle. So far everything attaches (wireless video, sound, noga for oboard monitor. With the bigger lenses we were able to tuck the follow focus rcx underneath. Still big enough of a handle to grab and move around.

Not only is the new handle a little hidden compartment. [...]

This gives me a good idea for a great little product: a RED BOLT kit integrated into screwdriver handle that...wait for it...doubles as the handle component for the WEAPON handle. It could still be reversible, and will definitely be strong enough torque-wise, but how cool would it be to have drivers and spare bolts built into the handle, always at the ready?

Was thinking the same, but then where do you put the drugs? :)

No, would be cool as long as it does not scramble around. I keep spare screws all over the place, sitting in the spare screw house on cheese plates etc.

Hey guys, just some food for thought. WC offers a V-Mount back plate (quickback) that mounts lower than the standard mount, that drops the battery a good inch and a quarter or so. I emailed them and asked if that would allow the DSMC2 top handle to be mounted with some of the taller V-Mounts and they let me know that the handle cleared their V-Mount battery by about an inch when the handle was mounted directly to the camera. So if you're using a top plate, you'll only add clearance.

I tried this one. The spacing alignment works, but it looks and feels wrong - very low clearance when attached to the body. If you had a riser or maybe the WC easy plate, it would be better, but then you lose the direct-to-camera LCD mount. So not really worth the extra effort required to make it work.

Thank you for the reply, Meryem. I've kept all my R1 stuff hoping that I could recycle it one day. Maybe on the DSMC3. :)

I hate this handle and the fact that we are forced onto getting it with the kit deal.. I know, I know it's "free".. why can't we get the new outrigger handle instead? it's the same price. I already own a red handle and would prefer to keep using it on my swat rail..

Not trying to piss anyone off but ideally building stuff that has the innate ability to be used in various configurations is always better. Not just knocking red for their handle either, I have things that irk me on all the brands. Or not the right kit perhaps? Red has done a great job on their dsmc2 but I'm def getting WC handle just to not have to deal with the limitation nor disassembly.... I'd be afraid of them not giving me a warranty if I somehow damaged it.

Björn,

thanks for the insight!

One question for you...can the lemo port on the LEMO ADAPTER A for the EVF/LCD be rotated?

In the configuration shown in the pics, if we use angled connectors they're sticking out of the camera profile...and we know it's bad, right? ;)

You choose to use straight connectors and even in that instance it's prone to fail...the best would be angled connectors angled towards the back or the front of the cam...no?

What do you think!?
