  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good news...

Jim,

Can I have the exact set of block lens list which you are going to release. Is there any plan to introduce wider and macro lenses?

But I believe that those dates were the ones he gave us before he said that he had put the team's focus on the release of the 18mm... so it seems the 4-6 month mark should have changed a bit for the better... for 18mm and others. Hopefully the 21mm is included... the 14mm would be nice but I think I'd rather have them take their time and focus on getting the best speed-cost possible out of it.

18mm (and others) are on an accelerated pace... as fast as we can go.

Jim

500 sets by early summer? I would take that to mean quite an incredible price. Given the onslaught of primes coming, for Red to sell 500 *sets* in 4 months time would indicate something pretty damned awesome.

Wow, now we get the Red glass revolution?

Good point. There aren't many jobs we can do without an 18mm so if it comes shortly after the first five that would be absolutely fantastic.

It also makes the 18-25mm range of the 18-50mm zoom a nice supplement. Hmm, maybe I want to keep a hold of my zoom...

An extra pair of socks, Evin, funny, I was thinking diapers.

What I find interesting about the supply and demand and who has cornered the market concerns is that it's all based on a soon to become extinct working model. Am I off here? Has there ever been time like these, when even someone with my modest resources is ready to buy a set of prime cine lenses? not a lens mind you, but a set! As we all await various models of (quickly approaching) film quality 'movie' cameras so we can bolt these primes onto them... and so on. I really wonder if it's going to matter a great deal who had cornered the market when it took an army of specialists working in hallowed halls just to see a freakin image. The ground is shifting so fast it's pretty tough to predict where much of this is going- but it's all good.

The 18-85 seems like a killer lens but I know of only one rental house that has one (indierentals). (correct me if I 'm wrong here). I.
Wrong Evin - we have 3 pieces here in metric - thats good for german customers and european customers....

I think OffHollywood has at least one... Mark?

Jim

btw, without revealing too much...I work within the agency/promo dept of a studio/major network. The SVPs are VERY apprehensive about RED and view it as a headache/disruption to their standardized workflow - not to mention they're not technical creatives.

As a creative, we often go to bat for RED, but at the end of the day, the suits are holding the purse strings.

There were some mini fights to get a RED on set, and then when the DIT arrived with it, he proceeded to talk trash about it. Unfortunately, we severely under-utilized the camera, and ended up only using it for one greenscreen shot, with everything else being relegated to 35mm. It really disappointed me, and had some of the individuals in my office giving me sideways glances because of the debacle and my fervent support of the camera system. You just don't have leeway to "gamble" when you're creating a campaign worth $25 million...especially with the old, crotchety gestalt in place.

All this said, my mind is made up on RED. I'll use it every chance I get, and will continue to fight for it. Lenses, cameras, whatever you can muster. Plus, things will change as soon as I'm directing for them...in with the new.

Just keep doing what you're doing Jim, but you might really want to consider publishing a solid manual, as well as other literature/podcasts/whatever to support and dispel the myths surrounding the camera. It would certainly make my job of convincing people easier.

I've been thinking through this today Jim. Sell them for what you can (obviously), but for what it's worth... if they remain at $20k, I'm out, at least for awhile, but if they are $15k or below, I'll kill myself trying to figure out how to get them. I've been mentally budgeting for your 18-85mm but would LOVE to get the primes instead.

First, Hollywood is NOTORIOUSLY late adopters and its well documented from Silent Film to "Talkies" from B&W to color... from Jack Valenti's infamous comment that the Home VCR would "ruin hollywood" and on and on...

it is ironic, but understandable... its a VERY high risk business when you
get into multi-million budgets... hence all the recycled films every year...
Benjamin Button aka Forrest Gump 2 being the most recent example.

Knowing, Book of ELi, ER etc will help pave the way... but again, Hollywood
is was and always be on the tail end of adoption...

as for RED... I trust its hard to "keep doing what you are doing" and then stopping to do the latter thing you requested... especially as a relatively young company... im more surprised nobody on here hasnt created the ULTIMATE RED USER GUIDE and made $ selling it... both in hard copy and Video... there are bits and pieces here and there... but I would think someone could get some ROI from a project like that...

also .. there IS a video on red.com called Mythbusters...

I know you guys will call me an elitist, Hollywood snob douche bag (and maybe rightly so) but I meant any of the "Hollywood" rental houses. And I say that not to diminish anyone else (I have mad respect for Offhollywood and Digital FX) but both of those houses are also production Co's with their own projects (and early Res. #s). I'm talking about rental houses that cater specifically to outside productions, like Keslow, Otto Nemenz, The Camera House and Abelcine. These are the places that buy lenses (and Red one's) 10 at a time. I used this as an indicator of supply and demand.

Thats not snobbish, its called context and actually makes more sense. my context was the private buyer lens market ... FYI- Zeiss SS's have already dropped on reduser
from $49K to $35K... just in the last 2 weeks... I know, I have been shopping for them

In a word... compartmentalization. I'm sure it's difficult. Everything that's worthwhile seems to be. And there's no use getting into the debate about Hollywood and its lack of willingness to adopt new technologies...we can all agree to that on some level.

My point is, in "my" experience...having the material would prove helpful. For one thing, the more I know, the more I can diffuse negative attitudes about the camera. And I'm on here all the time, but it's not the same as having a handy manual to be able to dog-ear, open and flip to an answer on the spot when bad-mouthing starts.

You're right though, I think it's a great idea for some entrepreneurial soul. I'm just not sure that there are enough cameras currently in the marketplace to support such an independent publishing effort - yet. At this point, unfortunately, a large measure of the responsibility falls on RED's shoulders.

Copywriters and illustrators can be costly, but you could defray some the cost by charging for a nicely bound, definitive RED Bible. Hell, I'm sure it's already coming...right, Jim?

The problem is that, until very recently, the Red universe has been changing so rapidly that a book would be badly out of date by the time it was published.
