GL Optics Sigma 18-35 Rehoused - Group Buy

Hi guys

Hope you don't mind me resurrecting this old thread. I thought it was better then creating a new one.

I'm considering getting a G.L. Optics modified 18-35, but I have some reservations. I would love to hear some testaments from those of you who have been using it for a while now. Some of my concerns are whether the lens holds up and performs over time, are the focus marks accurate, and if is it truly parfocal. I'm also interested in hearing about anything else a potential buyer might want to know about this lens. I'm not sure what to expect. In one way it seems a bit too good to be true, and I'm worried it will turn out to be a melon.

Any inputs are highly appreciated.

Most definitely not a melon. It's a gorgeous lens and very well done by GL Optics. The build is very solid.

I am not really able to comment on the par focal issue as I usually use it like a "variable prime." I have the 120 degree focus throw (the 300 degree is an extra cost). Again, I can't give a lot of detail on the accuracy of the focus marks as I usually just set them on the FF and work from there.

Hi Alex,

I started years ago this group buy and later became the European distributor for GL optics.

In general, the rehoused Sigma 18-35 is an amazing lens. I still use mine on nearly every shoot. And if properly collimated, it's also parfocal.

The reason why I stopped being the EU distributor for GL optics is that they had close to no quality control. I later on sent every single GL optics lens that I sold to Gecko Cam, a lens service house in Munich, which where able to collimate the lenses in most cases. Some lenses though had major issues and where impossible to use. I would recommend to purchase the GL optics 18-35 through a local distributor and ask them to send it to a service house for testing first.

I was told by Nan, the guy running GL optics, that they invested into higher quality control, so maybe those QC issues are gone.

PS: The 120° version is more likely to by free of faults, so if you're using a remote follow focus, I would go for that version.

I've been using the GLoptic remount (bought it @ David) and was impressed by the lens. I recently saw PS technik rehoused version of this lens and was really really impressed by their work.

I just bought this lens. I've been watching it for a long time, and finally was able to get it in December. Avi at cinemaglass.com hooked me up.

I took the lens to a rental house for a camera prep and started testing the focus marks. They were slightly off. Well, so were all my other lenses!!! After I did a proper back focus adjustment, this lens, AND all of my CP.2 lenses are rock solid on the focus marks. I did find it to be parafocal after a proper back focus adjustment on my camera.

This lens is great little lens. I got the 300 degree version so it would match my CP.2 lenses and I'm pleased with it so far. I've only had it for week or two, but I'm digging it. I plan on using it quite extensively later this month on a production.

Dude...this lens absolutely rocks, solid. Two guys that used mine in a project ended up buying it from Nan.

I've had mine for 2 years now. It has been collimated correctly. ParFocal is spot on but more than likely you will need to check your camera's back-focus and adjust it accordingly.

Thanks everybody for your inputs, I really appreciate it. Think I know what I need now to make my decision.
