  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GL Optics Sigma 18-35 Rehoused - Group Buy

Hey Mark, does it appear to talk to the Epic completely? I have a Sigma 17-50 that won't let me change the aperture with the Canon mount.

Yeah good question. Would RED need to add this lens to "the list" of lenses that work on Epic/Scarlet?

Dan if you have time, you think could you post some footage? There's so little out there...be great to get a sense of how this lens renders on Epic.

To those who have used/tested this lens: can anyone comment on the quality as compared to the Canon 17-40? If favorable, I certainly wouldn't mind a couple stops of extra light.

I need a little more time to shoot some stuff that I can show you guys that I would consider "Impressive" but I would rank this as the number one electronic mount lens I have ever used (meaning a non Cine Lens) It even beats out the Canon 24-70 version II which I thought was quite an impressive piece of DSLR optics.

The only downside between this and a 16-35 vII is it doesn't go to 16, and it doesn't have full frame coverage - it's an APS-C Lens. Canon 17-40 - I think that's one of the sharper Non L lenses, full frame but slow right?

Seriously though, I can't sing the praises of mine enough. It's serial number 13 ;)

For a wide zoom it has a ton of Emotion in it, and I find the flares to be attractive.

Of course, now I have to back that up with some footage for you that shows those traits, but that shouldn't be too terribly hard. Just a time thing.

I'm going to try to shoot a little something for you guys by next monday.

There's also a rumor floating around of a Sigma 24-70 f2 A series next year.

If this is true then I will be first in line to buy one. These guys are on a mission with lenses. The Allstar rehoused 50mm T1.5 was a firecracker too, and I imagine the 85mm they do is a stunner - it has tremendous reviews, and is not a cheap lens by any account either.

Awesome Dan! A little request from me... Considering it's quite a fast zoom - just wondering if (in your tests) you could take at how much separation you can get between subject and background to see how shallow you can get focus. Would be interested and hopefully others are too!

Cheers

Forget these canon lenses. I agree with Dan 100 per cent. this lens is leagues ahead of any of these others, in every respect,
My only issues (not important) manual focus is the only option (with my epic at least). Not an issue at all for me. I only use manual focus. I also can crash the iris-change by toggling iris too fast for the lens to keep up. It only seems to happen at 1.8, though. Strange. The lens must be re-seated to get the iris display back on camera. Hopefully it's just a firmware fix to happen in camera.
Hey Jim - Red should do it's own mod of this Sigma. It would sell like hotcakes.
I went to the store to check it covered 5k. I was amazed how well it did. Bought it without blinking.
I was keen to buy it for my Movi m10 - I'm definitely going to try to make it work non-rehoused with on the Movi, to save weight.

Good to know that it covers 5k!

I wrote Nan again today if he has any updates and the answer to all the questions about the rehoused lens which were posted here.

Good to know that it covers 5k!

Not just covered - seems sharp to the corners, with little evident light fall-off at all.
Also, colors are fantastic on this lens, but don't expect any flaring. You can point to the sun and barely see any (small) internal reflections.

I'm going to put it up against an Optimo tomorrow and compare.

Nan just answered most of the questions:

1) How big is the focus pull (in degrees)?

It's about 120 degree focus rotation

2) What's the real T stop of the lens? Could you mark the T-stops on the lens instead the f-stops?

3) Which image circle is covered (at 18mm and at 35mm). Will they cover the 5k Mysterium-X sensor or even the 6k Dragon sensor?

It will cover 5K sensor without problem. You will see the footage later. I have no 6K dragon, so I don't know it will cover or not.

4) If we order ~20 lenses, how fast could you ship them?

I think I can offer 20 Lenses within 5 weeks. maybe earlier:) But there is IBC 2013 at September, So 5 weeks is OK I think.

5) Will the lens keep focus when zooming?

Of course the Lens will hold on the focus when you zoom it.

6) How is the breathing?

I don't change the optical designed. So the breath will not change compare to the original condition.

7) Could you do some test videos incl. focus pulls and zooms?

Yes, you will find the test footage later.

8) Other than PL and Canon mount, would also be a Nikon mount possible? Are the PL and Canon mount user replaceable?

Depends one the order's number. If there are many orders of Nikon mount, I think I can make it. But I can't offer the replace Mount version now. Because it's very hard to hold on the focus on the Zoom Lens. If I offer the replace mount version, I think it maybe will has INF issue...

And, most importantly, here's the price (it's a public offer, so it's not password protected this time):

For 0-25 Lenses, the price is 3200 USD for lens + 80 USD for the cost delivery = 3280 USD.
For 25-50 units, I can offer 3000 USD for Lens + 80 USD cost delivery.
For more than 50 units, the price will be 2800 USD + 80 USD cost delivery.

I'm working right now with Nan on how to place an order. Probably I'll collect all the orders and then forward them to Nan and he will charge you via paypal. Deadline for this group buy will be September 15th midnight PDT. Also, I asked Nan if he can ship a lens to Phil Holland to make a review about the build quality. There's already one lens in LA for a review. Nan is now contacting Phil about doing some more tests.

David, two questions:

1) How much if we provide the lens ourselves?

2) Could NAN include a way of preserving a 77mm thread?
