  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GL Optics Sigma 18-35 Rehoused - Group Buy

I find this quite dissapointing..
It is stated in the Q&A in the first post of this thread that it is. (Or did i read that one wrong?)

---snip---
5) Will the lens keep focus when zooming?

Of course the Lens will hold on the focus when you zoom it.

Nan wrote me today, since he saw the posts claiming that the Sigma lens is not parfocal.

He checks every lens, so even if some standard lenses (like the one in the video by Aaron Nanto which Kwan posted) aren't parfocal, all of his rehoused 18-35mm lenses should be.

One issue might be that when focusing at 18mm, everything beyond 5m should be in focus since the lens is hyperfocal there. So when zooming in from 18mm, the focus might change. But when initially focusing at 35mm, the focus should stay, no matter if you zoom in or out.

That's standard practice -- zoom in all the way, focus, then zoom in/out till your parfocal heart is content.

Great news :)

Hello,

What sunhood do you recomend without being a clip on matte box.
Does a clip on matte box put some stress on the focusing/zooming mechanism?

Thanks and merry Christmas.

Pat

Zoom arrived today and I'm very pleased with it. Mehcanics are beautiful, really smooth. I did some quick tests, pulling zoom with my RedRock Micro Remote FF and it was quite smooth. Focus held across the zoom range. I didn't notice any vignetting at 5k FF. I'll take a closer look at it during the holiday. I think you're all going to be pleased.

Merry Christmas!

Do these have any binding or stiffness in part of the focus - for example - near focus too stiff for very easy pull by hand - far focus is smoother but kind still small tension?

Mine is the 300 deg version. I find the focus to be consistently smooth across the range. The movement has more tension than my Mini S4s but less than Zeiss or Leica Still lenses. It's actually nicer than the Van Diemen Rehoused Leicas I have. I'd say it's excellent for manual or remote FF systems.

Hello Christopher,

Do you think that if we put a clip on matte box it could hinder the focus/zoom to work properly due to the weight put on the front of the lens?

Pat

The zoom ring is at the rear of the lens. Applying weight to the front had no apparent effect. The zoom range is a short throw, though. One nice thing about the RRM FF was that it mapped that short throw to the full range of the hand wheel on the controller.

Great, mine 300 should arriving this week in Nepal. I have requested to custimize Print my company name on the lens barrel, he is doing it and shipping out this week.

I'll forward that to Nan. He will be quite happy to hear that you all like the lens so much!

Very nice thread guys.
How do you guys thing that a lens like this 18-35 plays together with other cinema lenses. Currently I only have Red Primes and struggle a bit with not having a cinema zoom and more pl lenses (plenty of Canon though).

I'm considering if we should try to hold off with cinema lens purchases to save up to the very expensive ones like both of the Fujinon Cabri at 38+42k dollars. Another option would of course be to buy a few lenses like this one from GLOptics and Duclos in the meantime but that would delay the bigger purchases.
How well would a lens like this play together with the fujinon for a cinema documentary for example? Right now I find myself not using cinema lenses since I have 11-400 in Canon lenses but not so good range in PL yet.

Tough questions I know :)

Thanks for any thoughts
/Andreas

Here's the lens, EF mount shown (got the PL mount option too), 300 degree option.
