  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GibCor's Top Secret RED 4K 3D Shoot

Gibby...

Ole coot huh?
I feel like Henry Fonda in "On Golden Pond"
You tell Max it's about time he got some readin specs. And tell him if he got some stronger ones (+3.00 diopters or such) he would not have to hold his head so far back from what he's looking at. lol

Yes we were concerned with production cameras matching for 3D on several technical levels. RED delivered beautifully on their end - no camera tweaks were needed to capture 3D with #8 and #13.

Nice job Red Team.

Sharkguy,

Speaking of matching... were those two RED zooms you were using? And if so, how close did the focal length markings and footage scales agree with each other?

Both cameras used RED 18-50 zooms. From what I observed and what Max said, the lenses were calibrated pretty close to each other. He liked the build of the lenses, and when we did the 2D test shots with #8 and Lucas put the footage up on his monitor, Max seemed to really like the quality of the images we were able to get with the camera/18-50 setup..

Everyone was stoked with the 3D images, considering what a short time we had to shake down the cameras, shoot, and post. Lucas' magic with SCRATCH helped immensely.

Hey Steve,
Big time congrats on this test! It was a real treat to meet you and Pam this last Friday. I had told my dad ahead of time that I was looking forward to seeing "Red, Jim & Co and Gibby". I look forward to seeing your 3d work in the future!

Congrats Steve and Sharky on being the first. I knew you guys would pull it off. Max and the guys at Paradise rocks. I can't wait to see some screenings.

Thanks Shawn. It was way cool to meet you and your dad, and to talk shop. I think you have some great ideas for how you want to use #27. Go get 'em!

RED Day was a magical day for sure. That night I drove up to L.A. to prep for the 3D tests and try to get some sleep....yeah right! Too stoked to sleep...

As you can tell from what Sharky and I have said on this thread, #8 and #13 did real well in the 3D test...

We'll put up more of our 3D info when we can...

gibby, c'mon stop it.. post your 2D footage! :-) less talk and more pics :innocent:

The 2D shots were merely to test the cameras out before launching into the 3D testing. We share info on our projects because this community is interested in real world projects with RED One. That said, we'll post pics and footage from our projects when we're ready...and not before. :gun:

gibby please! :help: we accept 2D.. :ranting2:

Congratulaions Gibby and good luck with your projects!!!
I'm happy for you and what your efforts would mean to 3D cinema because I'm a 3D fan too!

I hope you'll post a frame or two of 3D converted to cyan-red anaglyph so anyone of us can see with just a cheap pair of glasses!
Or just post a stereo pair and I'd be happy to do the conversion properly and upload the anaglyph!

Thanks Proteus, we're way stoked about 3D as you might guess!

The first 3D tests were a shakedown cruise so to speak. In short, we adapted the cameras to the Paracam, matched them, tested some individual camera 2D sequences, viewed those results, tweaked cameras and rig more, rolled the rig out onto the lot and shot some 3D sequences in natural light, processed the footage in SCRATCH, output it to files for the projectors, put glasses on, and watched our 3D footage! As mentioned before, a huge thanks to RED, and our associates at Paradise FX, and Assimilate.

Next we have a complete 3D production of a short movie on location scheduled, with full crew, actors, props, jib, ActionCam RED, etc. That edited piece will be what is shown in the screenings in L.A. that Sharky mentioned earlier in this thread.

After shooting the short, we'll post some DSLR stills of the crew and Paracam/RED in action. We won't be releasing any stereo pairs prior to those screenings, but we'll see about posting some stills of 3D converted to cyan-red anaglyph in advance of the screenings.

We're having fun with this! The images we've achieved to this point are stunning...RED One is the real deal for sure!

Gibby all this sounds very, very interesting! Of course, it's a bit of a challenge to overcome all technical difficulties and then make 3D art with it -especially the later! But it's that challenge and the fact that it still is "unexplored territory" that makes it soooo... interesting!

I too, believe that RED is the proper type of camera for this task because of its RAW ability, where the decisions are all left to the cinematographer.

I'm sure you have a lot of fun! And I would really love to see the short, but I live in Europe. I hope there will be 3D capable D-Cinemas here soon, to enjoy the new 3D evolution and your work!

BTW, have you thought of releasing part of your 3D work (eg shorts) to a format for early 3D adopters (home cinema 3D fans)?
I think that although 3D productions are rare, there are thousands of 3D fans that would be willing to buy quality 3D-HD shorts, movies etc that they could see with their projectors, Plasma or CRT screens, perhaps with shutter glasses. There may not be many high refresh rate displays yet, but thats a minor detail for ..early adopters! EDIT: Even anaglyph in HD would sell very well, in my opinion amd to a larger market!

But there are already some 3D capable HDTVs. You may know that Samsung has released a projection TV that can display 3D @ 120fps (60fps/eye) using LED instead of a lamp for better color! "The HLT generation of Samsung DLP HDTVs are capable of displaying future 3D games, movies, and other programming via 3D compatible glasses and hardware."

And soon a 3D-Blu-ray player from Mitsubishi

Anyway, I'm looking forward to see samples of your work, even on anaglyphs!

So, we should be seeing SharkGuy & LavaGibby in theaters soon, eh? :)

Amazing work, guys! Truly incredible.

I have been asked to provide 3D content for one of the major electronic manufacturers to use for their 3D home system demonstrations. I was thinking great white sharks in 3D but they need it ASAP so it will probably be great bait ball sequences from Mexico.

Very cool systems indeed...

Haha, anyway that's good news! Don't forget though that the first impression counts for the consumer... whoever is the first, might be remembered... and that might be a good mass advertisement oportunity for your company!

IMO any impressive sequence, even small clever things in 3D could have an impact to the viewer.. The trick is to make him see from a different perspective ...what he was taking for granted -until now!

(The funny thing is I was also interested in that area from the beginning... I've done a lot of research (I'm more on the technical side) I have also cancelled a 3D project in HDV in favor of the RED camera, but I don't know yet If I'll manage next year to continue, (I'm currently occupied on a totally different area) but I hope so!)

Man - that sounds really cool Sharkguy. Great Whites might be cooler... but that rig you guys have is truly amazing. I think underwater and 3D is a really good match because it's surreal to begin with.

Congrats! Can't wait to see some footage.
