  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GibCor's Top Secret RED 4K 3D Shoot

I have to say I expected something like this from you two! This is great news and I'm sure both of you are stoked. Big Congratz!!!

I also expected something "more" after Sharkguys post a few days ago, 3D is the next logical evolution for films (and has been since the fifties), hopefully with your workflow - going there will be feasable.

Good luck, please share more when you can!

Hey Ken and Gibby,
Pushing the envelope never felt so good I bet. That's monumental mate. So I go out diving, spend the day with some (grey) suits and come back to the news of the century......knock 'em dead guys.....well I forgot, you already have.

Well done.
Mark.

Thanks for the kind words everyone…

So, the “cat is outa the bag”, so to speak! Both Sharky and I have been right here in the middle of the RED User community, and we’ve had a ton of inquiries about what we’ve had to keep under NDA. We were finally ready to roll part of it out into the open, and RED User was naturally our first place to post some info on our project. Now that our RED User family has had a peek at our 3D project, this morning a press release on our RED 4K 3D project went out to multiple trades.

Let me just say this from the beginning: thank you RED Team for your dedication in developing RED One, lenses, and accessories. You’ve done “impossible” things in such a relatively short time span. The genie is now out of the bottle – the tools are starting to hit the streets, sets, and locations. Now its up to us, the users, to push these tools to their limit – and beyond!

I was way impressed by the RED Day at RED headquarters last Friday. Under intense time and resource pressure, RED Team, including Jim and every team member, stepped up as pros and exhibited the kind of attitude and customer service ethic that simply is missing in this industry. They made everyone feel like family.

There were shortages of some accessories on Friday, but RED Team apologized for that and accommodated everyone as best as possible. Think about this: Jim Jannard left for the NHRA Indy races the next day and took one of his RED One cameras – and didn’t even have a RED LCD to use on it because he made sure every last one of the LCD’s that were available went out with his customers on Friday. I’m one of the customers that got an LCD and it was indispensable for our RED 4K 3D shooting on Saturday. Thanks Jim and RED Team for your commitment to your customers – deeply appreciated.

RED #8 and #13 (Thanks again Billy!) performed really well right out of the box. To be sure, being in the very first batch of shipping cameras, you’d expect some bugs to pop up. We had nothing that I’d call a “bug”, and when something didn’t work quite right we later found out that it was operator error as we figured out the our field workflow.

The build of the camera, lenses, and accessories is solid – built like a tank for sure. IMO this stuff will take a professional beating and easily come back for more. We used RED 18-50 zooms on both of the cameras. The results were excellent.

The LCD is lightweight, mountable almost anywhere, and dances well with the system.

The relatively small size and mounting options for RED One were critical to the 3D work we did. Our crew was able to mount the cameras on the Paracam without problem.

A big thanks to Lucas Wilson of Assimilate for bringing their SCRATCH system to our 3D testing! It made working with the footage a cakewalk for sure.

Lastly, a huge thanks and kudos to our friends at Paradise FX! They jumped in with their extensive 3D experience and together we had great fun while figuring out how to set up and operate the Paracam with RED One cameras. BTW…we also shot some 2D test shots with each camera, right out of the box…and the results were excellent.

The bottom line is that we not only set up the Paracam RED 4k 3D equipment – but then rolled it out into the lot and easily cranked out some 3D footage. After Lucas worked his SCRATCH magic, we loaded the files up to the projectors, put the 3D glasses, and held our collective breath – then there it was – our Paracam/RED One 4k originated 3D short! Believe me, it was a total rush! We all hooted and watched it over and over again – a bunch of image hungry guys getting a major buzz.

We’re under NDA on many details of the technology involved – can’t say more now. As we can, we’ll give you some more details on our project.

We believe 2D production will obviously always be with us, and we’ll naturally continue to do 2D production with RED One. But RED One 3D opens some exciting possibilities! In the coming months and years we expect our PFX/GibCor RED 3D systems to deliver some amazing images as we put them to use in the multiple genres of production around the world.

Again, thanks for the kind words guys…we’ll get you more info when we can.

Parting thought: RED 2D seriously rocks…but RED 3D is a mindblower!

Excerpt from Hollywood Wiretap:

Katzenberg's army of followers seems to grow almost daily. Steven Spielberg is on board and is preparing to work with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson to produce a 3D film. They join devotees like Titanic director James Cameron and a certain Yoda from San Francisco named George Lucas, who intends to trot out his six Star Wars flicks in 3D starting in 2009. "Jeffrey's Mr. Go Go," says Lucas. "The time has come for 3D to become more than some theme park attraction. We see a business there."

Looking forward to being able to put a deposit down on the ParaCam technology.... hopefully the Red business method will begin to flow on down the line to associated projects etc. It can only lead to great things!!

It was pretty damned cool. There's always that pucker moment right before you hit play when you think "man, I sure hope this works." And then we hit play... and it worked... and it was crisply defined stereo. Well... there was a bit of an anticlimax because I got the eyes mixed at first, so it was pseudo-stereo. Kinda weird hearing a room of previously quiet people yelling "PSEUDO!" Not a normal crowd call. : )

A quick flip of layers in SCRATCH, and "poof" - stereo.

The crew I got the chance to work with was fantastic... all serious pros. It was 107 in Van Nuys on Saturday, and we were shooting outside... and everbody remained in really good spirits. :) Steve and Ken... thanks for giving me the opportunity to be a part of it.

To go from two new, untested cameras out of the box to a successful stereo screening in one day is nothing short of amazing.

Looking forward to much more...

That is way funny! Sounds incredible! The slight flicker of 3d films was pretty distracting before. Digital should be amazing to see.

that ROCKS you guys!! I've worked with Max Penner in the past (in the early days of the sony F900) and he's as cool and bad ass as it gets. I knew somewhere out there he would be involved with RedOne, obviously sooner than later! good for you guys, here's to taking the next level to the next level. Can wait to see the screening!

I've worked with Max and Tim at Paradise FX since '97 when we shot the first underwater 3D with Sony HD cameras. Max is not in a box and therefore doesn't need to think outside it. Tim is the coolest guy under pressure I know - a rock.

It was a no brainer on who Gibby and I were going to work with on RED 4K 3D. Paradise FX is a leader in 3D technology.

BTW - That is Tim on the left muscling the submersible with the 3D camera rig inside into position - he could damn near bench press the thing.

this is just super sicky sick! especially since james cameron's "ghost of the abyss" is just about my favorite. film. experience. ever! and so very few people have seen it. it was as much a film about making films as it was about its actual topic, the titanic. in 3D, no less.

and "sharkboy and lavagirl" is probably one of my daughter's all-time favorites.

this is just so mind-blowingly cool and that you did it straight out of the box is downright heroic. nice work. way to make a splash.

This is totally fantastic!

I'm speechless...
