GibCor's Top Secret RED 4K 3D Shoot

I'd say the LA screening will be 7-10 days after genlock is enabled this month in the Redone cameras in order to eliminate the multi-camera phase issues.

I knew that it must be 3D after this yesterday's post of Sharky! :whistling:
Congrats, Gibby and Sharky! And good luck!

When And Where?

When And Where?

I have some professional 3D cinema conversion experience (like Nightmare Before Christmas 3D but on a different title) and amateur stereo photography experience and I'm a camera head so this couldn't be more up my alley/areas of interest!

So, maybe I missed it the info but...I live in LA - Where is this happening? When a date is locked down will a new thread be created so that we can easily be clued-in? I'm stoked to see this, thanks Gibby/Shark Guy :)!!!!

This is just too much...
How to sleep after all of this???
First there was nothing, then came RED
Total mess...so different
Amazing... Simply Amazing
Priceless...

Congrats, guys.... keep it going

screenings

FAR OUT, that's awesome......so this screening your doing, is it big wigs only or is there someway average Red Joes like me can get to check it out?

Yes, the first LA screening of our RED 3D sizzle piece is for A-listers. There can't be pitching going on in the screening if you know what I mean - not cool. This is showBUSINESS but I have a thing about excluding the "little guy." I"ll work on a 3D screening for the reduser community if there is enough interest. No promises but it would be fun.

Katzenburg

"Katzenberg's pitch: 3D can spice up the industry's box office take, which is growing this year by only single digits despite blockbusters like Spider-Man 3 and Transformers. Theaters hope to charge as much as $5 more per ticket for 3D films. And the technology keeps viewers away from DVDs (3D films can't be seen on disc, yet) and thwarts piracy since 3D movies are harder to record.

There's an element of self-interest in Katzenberg's campaign. The 3D technology is best suited for special-effects and animated films like those produced by his company. DreamWorks has said it plans to release only 3D movies to theaters, starting in 2009 with an animated horror movie, Monsters vs. Aliens, as well as the latest in its Shrek franchise."

"I don't hear anyone clamoring for this," says box office tracker Paul Dergarabedian, founder of the research firm Media by the Numbers. "Maybe if there are some great films that you just have to see in 3D."

A case of Hollywood trying to create demand where there currently is little to boost ticket prices. They might just do it. They are the best in the world at hype and they have massive advertising reach. I'll see Beowulf 3D for sure.

Bad ass Gibby! Congrats! How to top shooting in 4K....4K 3D!

This'll be VERY cool to see. Tewtally worth delaying LART for this.

Peter Gibbons: What would you do if you had a million dollars?
Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man: two Reds at the same time, man.
Peter Gibbons: That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two Reds at the same time?
Lawrence: Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a millionaire I could hook that up, too; 'cause a real Red shoot needs a dude with money.
Peter Gibbons: Well, not all Red shoots.
Lawrence: Well, the type of Reds that'd double up on a shoot like mine do.
Peter Gibbons: Good point.

Matching...

Matching...

Exciting stuff. I assume for this type of work the two separate cameras do need to match very accurately in exposure, color etc. Did you find that they matched up well "out of the box", or were individual adjustments necessary?

Yes we were concerned with production cameras matching for 3D on several technical levels. RED delivered beautifully on their end - no camera tweaks were needed to capture 3D with #8 and #13.

Nice job Red Team.

.........If there's enough interest..... You're gonna have to beat the overflow crowd of redheads away with a stick. :gun: Seriously though that would be very cool of you guys if you did a screening for redheads. I'm sure everyone would be happy to make donations for theatre costs or pitch in somehow to make it happen.....hell,... I'll put on a funny hat and sell JUJU BEEs at the concession counter if it helps :nerd:

There's interest!!!

There's interest!!!

We're (the little guys/Redheads) interested! Just tell us when and where!

Fantastic news! - congrats to Gibby, Ken & Luki. Any chance of us eupopeans getting a sneaky peek of this on Assimilate's stand at IBC? (I know this is wishful thinking!)

Sorry, Adam... it is wishful thinking. :)

I am not GibCor, but I think they want their first RED 3D piece that is publicly available to be a knock-it-out-of-the-park experience.

I mean... at the end of the day, we did it. But it was what you might call an abbreviated delivery schedule. We took a few shortcuts here and there. :)

Well,

Gibby and I promised the reduser community you'd see it here first. The results of GibCor's "Top Secret" RED ONE shoot from Saturday is being released tomorrow. Special thanks to Billy Summers and #13.
So here's the skinny:

BTW - I can't afford to send 3D glasses to everyone so you'll have to see the results when we screen them in LA later this month or see our GibCor 4K 3D feature in a RealD theater near you "Coming Soon."

Sharky

A quantum leap in 3D production and stereographic post-production from a tapeless workflow, resulted in a successful 3D test shoot and screening on Saturday, September 1st . Producers Steve Gibby and Kenneth Corben of GibCor, teamed up with their 3D production partners Max Penner and Tim Thomas at Paradise FX to produce one of the first stereo 3D shoots originated with RED 4K cameras.

GibCor provided RED camera #8 and their associate, Billy Summers, provided RED camera #13. Both were literally “out of the box” from the first 25 RED cameras released on August 31st. The team shot a 4K 3D dual camera test, and captured REDCODE RAW to two RED 8 GB compact flash cards.

The production alliance between GibCor and PFX has been in development on their RED 4K 3D projects since February in anticipation of the cameras’ release this year. “The results of this first RED 4K 3D shoot will enable us to bring great stories, shot in stereo 3D, to audiences like never before,” said producer Steve Gibby. The RED 4K cameras were fitted with a pair of RED compact zooms (18-50mm) and mounted to the Paracam. The Paracam is a 3D camera system that employs a beam splitter and has digital control of the inter-axial and convergent positioning of each of the RED ONE cameras. By Noon the team was viewing 3D content, originated from a tapeless 4K workflow.

The 4K 3D post workflow was seamless thanks to the SCRATCH system and Lucas Wilson from Assimilate. The 4K REDCODE RAW .r3d files were imported from CF cards into a beta version of REDCINE running on an Intel based Mac system. The left and right eye files were de-bayered from 4K RAW to 2K files then imported to SCRATCH as .dpx files. SCRATCH allowed for “plug and play” into Paradise’s dual projection system for quick stereo 3D playback. After the screening, veteran 3D stereographer Max Penner said, “To take 2 cameras that have never been tested out of the box, then shoot and project 3D all in one day, is almost unheard of. All done with no umbilical cables, tape decks or digitizing. This changes everything!”

Paradise FX and GibCor are in negotiations with several major studios regarding this technology and it’s implementation in the motion picture industry. This is the first of a succession of stereo 3D tests with the RED ONE camera. Ongoing tests will help to define a workflow to apply to future 3D productions in both Large Format Film and Digital Theatrical Releases. The RED ONE camera has a small 3D form factor with a high resolution at a decent price, making it highly promising for future 3D films.

I took those pics. I'm gonna tell Max Penner you said that! You told me you've known him for a long time, but last Saturday when I asked him if he remembered Chuck Colburn (not "Coburn"!) he said "Who?"

Just kiddin' - he said you're a good ole coot and to tell ya "Hi"!

Sharkguy,

I've got to admit that when I first saw the Katzenberg quote in your signature I thought maybe you were being facetious about a technology that just hadn't taken off. Now I see that you guys aren't just taking this to the next level, you've gone all the way up to the roof, and leaped off! And then filmed it! In 3D! Okay, maybe the metaphor just got too long, but WOW! Really. WOW!

Maybe you guys could coordinate some kind of showing with the rumored LART after-party. Or would that be too soon?

Suffice it to say, there is interest.
