  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Gate Flare | Flaregate

I can forgive a lot -but how was this gate flare missed during the months of beta testing? My AC reported the flaring on his first prep day with my new Epic.

RED is preparing a user-installable OLPF port bushing for users who feel this is an issue for them. It has been approved through engineering and we are ordering up some quantities of this to be fabricated. When we have some in stock, I will provide an email address where you can request this OLPF port bushing and we will send it out to you to install. Or, we can install it for you. Both at no charge.

Should have more info early next week on this...

Brent, will these be installed on Stage 3 cameras? If not, can we request they be installed before shipping?

I believe is that is the plan. If not, yes, you can request that, no problem.

Thanks Brent,

Been wondering about this one for a bit.

Looking forward to getting the email,

Is it possible to take it out in the field once installed? For those odd jobs where it's a desired look.

Hi Rocco

I'm total with you on this. This has to be fixed asap. I'm usually the flare guy but this is crazy.
Looks like on an old Hi-8 camcorder.

Hope that new fix will work fine.

Thanks
Tim

Awesome news, Brent!
Would be great if it was pre-installed in all new cameras shipped.

Brent, sorry for my very limited understanding on the technical side of things, but adding this will not in any way lower the quality of the footage captured with the Epic, correct? In other words, any advantages to NOT install this, or ask for this when our stage 4 cameras are ready?

I was just cursing the flare about 3 minutes ago.. I like it when Im doing art shit.. but Im in the middle of a CAR TVC with alot of VFX... It's really caught me out...

This is Great NEWS Brent, Thanks!
Quick question... Is is permanent. or could I pull it out when I want the flares.

Cheers...

Brent -please let us know...really was a problem with us on our feature and if we're to get any new rentals on our M's we will need this.

I know as soon as it shows up in a shot people are going to freak out demanding to know why it's happening -and in some instances it's unavoidable.

As I keep saying, get doug underdahl's solution for $10 or whatever. It works, you'll never see a flare again. It'll tide you over until the red solution.

And you can easily remove it if you want. And it doesn't void your warranty. I installed them on both my cameras in a couple of minutes.

I'll be happy to see RED's solution actually available. Been a long time coming.

I agree that the gate flare is unacceptable. Light contamination from sources in positions that normally wouldnt produce a problem. Sometimes impossible to flag off, requiring a change of lighting setup. I can't imagine this was an intentional product design.

That all said, once Underdahl sent me his foam solution, I never thought twice about it. I honestly wouldnt care if RED never fixed it, except for the fact that the more EPIC's ship without a solution, the more bad impressions can be made to clients and other DP/Directors out there. So thank you RED, but seriously, THANK YOU Doug.
