  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks a lot for posting those links, and thanks to Emmanuel for shooting it.
Great to hear it from the horse's mouth!

The new timeline features are more impressive than textual descriptions make them sound. I suspect even if FCP X ends up annoying workflow guys with things like missing R3D support (which we don't actually know yet), it's going to be a huge hit with editors on this basis alone.

I have to admit, I giggled happily a few times when they demonstrated the features of the magnetic timeline and stuff like that. But until we know more about native support for footage, I wont be sold. My guess will be that Apple will somehow create a system where it's easy for manufacturers such as Red, Canon, Panny to create "plug-ins" for native support of their footage. That way, Apple doesn't have to keep up with the constantly changing formats of the market, but you still have the integration that everyone craves.

It's wait and see for me. At $299, it's cheap and to be honest, with the tagging abilities and GPU + multi-core acceleration, FCP-X could negate other apps like Storm.

I'm not concerned about R3D support. I'm 99.9% sure it will be in there.

As for the magnetic timeline, animation editor, and a few other editing features... Most of those are already in existence in other apps in some form. Most 3D animation packages have had graph-based keyframe editing for many years, for example. Other features like the clip auditioning is patently Apple... But it's nice to see so many good features rolled into one product.

FCP was in dire need of an update and it looks like Apple is taking a great step in the right direction. Now I want to see what will become of Color.

Funny how everyone cheered when they showed the fader handles in the timeline, which has been a feature in Sony Vegas since the beginning. I always felt like the way FCP handled crossfades was so clunky and stupid.

A lot of the demo video seemed to show that they integrated most of Color into the app. That was my impression at least...

I read, native support of any format up to 4K in real time. But how you pump it out the system is another question...

Hey Jeff, I guess your back in Denver.

Enjoyed viewing FCPX with you and Clark last night and must say i'm impressed with the new look and advancements. I'm hoping you are right about R3ds

I'm almost through watching. I find it really exciting - it looks a lot like Logic Pro now (i've not used iMovie) which is nice app. What I also like is that it looks like they've really set out to reduce the number of key presses, clip shuffles track creating etc. and allow you to get to the point quickly without damaging your timeline. I've seen some of the features in other apps before - Premiere has had virtual clips for years, but they're not as easy on the eye or intuitive as the compound clips shown.

I've never used Avid beyond the trial, but with Premiere Pro upgrade at £285 and FCP going for $299 there's no reason not to try both. For me it'll come down to the no-transcode workflow (Premiere) versus background rendering and ingest proposed by Apple. I enjoy FCP but could happliy live without transcoding footage to prores before editing.

What I'm looking forward to and hoping to to be surprised by, are that the workflow enhancements that FCP have on offer and whether they'll mitigate the 'cost' of transcoding.

Many people are criticizing FCPx for "borrowing" this and that from iMovie. I will suggest that many of the features found on iMovie now were developed for FCP first and trickeld down to iMovie in a simplified manner. Remember FCPx has been in development for a LOOOONG time now.

Looks like a lot of footage used in the FCP demo could be RED, judging by file naming conventions. But probably Alexa since they're pretty similar to RED naming. See the below Apple-provided screens. This means they could well be aware of EPIC, etc. Also, word is that the build we saw last night was compiled in February- right around the EPIC launch. So they will have had 4 months post EPIC release to add in 5k and native RED support. Let the drooling begin...

Thanks for posting this! Say, does anyone else get the feeling that Color may have been absorbed into FCP? Think there will still be a separate app?

Magnetic timeline is pretty cool and as usual for apple the user interface is simply perfect and way more advanced than any other NLE

Right. The innovation here isn't new ideas, but a new way of organizing the ideas into a consistent experience. There is a new design paradigm where data can be represented visually in a more clear way rather than numbers. The challenge is finding the balance between simplicity (which you want 90% of the time) and precision (which you need when you need it).

My hope is that FCP will absorb color and sound in the unified interface or 'room' approach. It's fine to send your files to other programs, but those points in your workflow are usually linear. It's nice to delay making final editorial choices until the last possible moment when all the elements are in place instead of having to cross your fingers and imagine how it will look with sound and color.

I like the idea of a unified interface using existing software like Color and Logic. Logic is pretty damn powerful actually. No, it's not ProTools, but it's good. So let's hope for a start to finish solution. Either in a unified interface or at least proper roundtripping.

Thanks for posting!

Agree, this helps a lot better than the bullet point summaries. Looks like Sony Vegas - except 5 years in the future. I mean that as a sincere compliment. Lots of things to like, indeed!

I'm mostly use Avid but this looks like a ton of fun to try out. Must buy, for sure.

Chris - that's kinda my dilemma. What if Avid gives you the Media Composer and Pro Tools in one app... but without the new interface advantages of FCP X? VS Apple which doesn't integrate Logic, but give you Magnetic Timeline awesomeness? Which do you pick? Aaahhh!

In your first screen grab, in the bin under "Cameras", it very clearly says "Alexa" "Canon 5D" and "GoPro". I don't see anything about RED.
