  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fucked up PL allen screws

Upgrade?

Upgrade?

First off,

I had this happen on no less than three cameras at the same time. I used a 5/64" drill bit to dig down into the screws and then a EX-1 Reverse spiral screw extractor.

:
BTW at this point, with a few "stuck screws " it would be a good idea to use Stainless Steel thread inserts(helicoil or solid type) in the adjuster part to make sure this doesn't happen again. While the mount is off the camera it should be a pretty straightforward job for a decent machine shop.

I already swapped them 4 or 5 times no problem.
wasnt able to unscrew the allen screws of the mount and i ended damaging 7 screws out of 8....

my question is how that happened with you ?
were you trying to unscrew them manually or by help of some device ??( i mean something other than allen keys)

Yeah, seriously. Totally unnecessary.

I don't know about that.

I think the thread title is very appropriate.

Let the guy express himself. I'd be saying the exact same thing too if it happened to me.

I hope you get it all sorted Paolo

same happened to me. Dont use the L shape tools they send. I bought a handgrip screwdriver type version and was able to open them all. Even though they pratically looked like round holes. They're like butter. The Red Team sent me new screws free of charge though. Who else would do that :)

If you´re talking about the 8 Screws you see when you remove the cap from the PL mount on my camera they´re not allen screws they are TORX screws, they look quite similar until you look close.Torx look more star shaped than a hexagonal shape. There are extra TORX Screwdrivers available, try that before going to a workshop.

The screws RED uses are torx plus, not regular torx. The correct driver is TP-10.

That is correct... We moved to Torx screws to help solve this problem, if you want to switch to the Torx email Brent and he will send you a little screw kit.

Also.. use a torque wrench when you put the screws on ( with a bit of lube) ... 22 inch-lbs is a good number.

Thank you for the inch pounds Jarred. It's amazing how you answer before I even get a chance to ask.

I think you should stick with the PL lenses...

Brent or Jarred,

When are those Nikon Torx screws going to ship? I placed an order for both and I think the only reason I got the PL Torx screws was because my camera was in the shop. I remember there being a delay to the Nikon length. Is that still on? The Tork setup is so much faster and safer. Thanks!

If one is removing mount regularly it will be better to improve the mount by having an enginering firm insert heli coils.

Local engineers could somehow do it without swarf falling inside the body of dicast magnesium of Sony bodies.
No harm in beefing up the camera to suite your way of working but take note of any warrenty issues.
