  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Fucked up PL allen screws

This just hurts too much. Ask any Arri tech who's been removing PL mounts since the 80's how many heads they've broken or threads they've stripped since they started pulling mounts on camera's. I've broken a lot of stuff, and I've ruined a lot of allen heads. I can't remember ever having to drill or easy out a mount screw. Torxs are nice and maybe torx plus are better but they alway look like allens to me at first glance. Sometimes the wheel doesn't have to be reinvented. Cheese Heads Rule.

After Eric made such a mess - Aldey did authorize the purchase of torque wrench and a drill press.

Out of interest where did you get the Torx Plus bit for the wrench from? I can't seem to locate one, I have a driver and keys, but no wrench bit.

Thanks.

I screwed up one of my screws also exact same problem and same thing.

I used a larger allen wrench not a torx
forced it into the screw and got it out.

Problem solved with the help of the magnificent Head of Operations Department of AMG Roma, Walter, who spent three hours slightly hammering and unscrewing all the allen holes. Replaced the screws with new ones (i think of a harder material). Gonna substitute the screws after each change in the future.
I assume the cause of the tightening was the thermal excursion the camera is going under every day.
Thanks to everybody for your help and support :-)

This is a good example of why the P+S Technik IMS is such a compelling solution for those who will be swapping mounts often.

Indeed. Got it installed a week ago @ P+S, had a first shoot last friday. Was changing between Red18-50 and Canon EF Macro 100/2.8. It's simply a pleasure. Filmed the whole IMS installation process with my FX1 Handycam, just didn't have the time to capture/edit/compress/post anything.:weight_lift:
P+S will surely post something on their homepage, pics and grabs from me will follow next week.

AND: that macro is great fun. Next step should be microscopy - since having recorded TEM-footage of DNA as close to the chromatides I am totally intrigued by that world.

Cheers, Fritz

P+S seems to void Red warranty as it is

In case anyone is wondering... the P+S technic mount came in, and it has no allocation for the /i pin cable whatsoever, so they are going back to the drawing board to resolve that issue.

As of right now, the P+S adapter defiantly voids the warranty, as the only way to make it work is to actually cut off the /i cable.

Ciao Paolo,

They are negotiating about the warranty, actually, and I think the point about the warranty void is that RED hadn't received an IMS by that time - but RED should have by now. I was present when Alex of P+S changed the RED PL-mount for the IMS mount and I filmed it. No electronics touched. No removal of the front part of the REDOne. Just exchanging one mechanical part for another one. It works perfectly, absolutely no issues. The collimation took some time, I also filmed that, but again: no issues. I did some shots last friday in the Centro Sperimentale Agrario Laimburg here in South Tyrol/Alto Adige and I am totally intrigued by the IMS system, because it is so simple and secure to change mounts and optics.

Had to work day&night for the last weeks, but next week I am on a workshop and I am looking forward to finding the time to do the postings. P+S will get my handycam-filming, so they can decide what to put online as a kind of video tutorial of how to do it. I'll post the important frame grabs, esp. when the i/cable is moved back into its hole in the RED body.

Ciao e buon lavoro,

Fritz

I am almost in the same boat, my IMS mount will arrive today, but I was planning to hold back instaling it until they find an agreement on the warranty issue, especially on the I cable, so if you have time to post those framegrabs I will be very thankfull. How does the PL mount feel in comparison to the original Red mount ? More issues you can share ?
Thanks and Ciao

mmm...My RED lens mounts uses T10 torx screws. In either case, as stated before, buy a better wrench than the RED supplied ones.
