My Pro LCD came back from a rental with some scratches on it. The repair cost is almost as high as a new one.
Maybe someone is interested in this one. The scratches are barely visible when the monitor is on and it might not bother someone budget conscious. It is less than a year old.
Make an offer...

scratched lcd repair

scratched lcd repair

Hello,
I have made replacement front shields for the 7" Red LCD. Identical to originals.
$270 for the part + 2 hr labor to replace or you can do it yourself. To be clear- it's a replacement for the scratched part on your monitor Florian.
Contact me at jacek-at-optitek-dot-org for more info:yesnod:

Good to know Jacek, Thanks!

Ouch...I've got a protector on mine, but it's hard to tell camera crew to keep it on if they feel like it's compromising their judgement of the shots.

Florian, what's your plan in the future for protecting it? Has anyone tried the one they are selling at Film Tools.

I just received this glass shield from filmtools. It most certainly protects from scratches and reduces glare on the LCD. The only thing I can be critical of is the fact that since it is velcro on, there is a gap between the LCD screen and the shield, so you have to yank it off to wipe the dust off the LCD. No big deal. It doesn't seem to change what you see on the screen at all.

The velcro on the glass shield also wraps around the front, so if you have something like a hoodman cover for your LCD, you can slap it on within seconds on top of the shield. Good buy, even though the price seems quite steep.

Cheers.

Thanks for that. I might invest in one. The current plexiglass version I have is not ideal.

Jacek - are those replacement parts available for the 5,6" too?

Jacek - I'm also interested!

5.6" monitors

5.6" monitors

Unfortunately the 5.6" Red monitors are built in more traditional way and have no protection for the LCD panel. The scratches you see on the 5.6" monitors are on the LCD panels unlike the 7" that has a thin protective shield.
Having said that we offer repair service for the 5.6" panel where we refurbish the panel to like new condition. The price is less than half of the replacement from Red. We also offer passive contrast enhancement for the 5.6" panels that visibly improve the contrast, colors, detail and viewing angles for the 5.6" monitor. In addition to the display improvements the top layer of the enhancement is easily removable and replaced so it offers limited extra protection for the monitor. The cost of replacing the top layer is a fraction of the scratch repair.

"bruised" monitor

"bruised" monitor

Jacek, sounds interesting. We have a couple 7 inch RED LCDs that could use some protection.

Is it possible to fix a bruised 5 inch LCD?
If by bruised you mean a dark spot on the screen(looks like a bruise) the answer is no. The bruise is actually a pressure damage to the liquid crystal and is not reversible(afaik)
contact me at jacek-at-optitek-dot-org maybe I could help you with a replacement panel...

I can attest to the fact that the Schneider rhino glass from filmtools is a great protector... very clear and no visual interference, though it does add more weight to an already heavy monitor.

Jacek's service sounds great! I wish I knew about it a month ago when my 7" got scratched on its first day of shooting. I ended up selling my pro lcd to a rental house and got another new one.

Thank you,
Remember, all you need to do is post your gear issues here like Florian did.
There is a good chance for a solution....
This is the place everyone visits..

with the Rihno glass, i have been recommending people attach it actually with clear silicone. It seals it in nicely and you can always take it off with the an x-acto knife.

But its great, pretty much director proofs the monitor.
Allot of the rental houses have done it this way for a while, even on the panasonic 17's.
