  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Everyone that has a Dragon should make sure to move to the latest release build.

It is important.. Calibration, New and Old OLPF flags, A.D.D, all work alot better on the newest build.

The new Dragon SDK that went out to the developers has a few things in there as well that benefit the newest build.

And don't forget to do a new black shade.. It's insane the difference of quality between the new calibrations and the ones from just a few builds ago.

It is... which is important for obvious reasons. Not just for the new Dragon OLPF but for down the road when those are user changeable.

We set it for you in camera when your camera is in to do the OLPF upgrade so you don't need to do anything.. the SDK and RCX will automatically shift.

so new calibration ( and the talked 1+ more stops of DR in highlights ) is coming from the firmware upgrade and not from the new OLPF installation?

also, how can we check if a certain R3D has been shot with old or new OLPF ?
being a new camera new camera and so subject to judgment and impression , would be good to know what i am looking at ... old or new OLPF , old or new calibration etc...

I can answer the first part of this question. The 1.3-ish stops of highlight retention comes from where the dynamic range is placed on the New Calibration. What we see in terms of the captured dynamic range and what's recorded into REDCODE RAW is what Red utilizes from the total dynamic range offered by the Dragon sensor and where they map/tune/calibrate it to allow us to get the best image quality possible.

One interesting bit, is due to the New Calibration there is more retained color information in the highlights as well when compared to the old tech.

Additionally, you will notice a very slight increase in subtle shadow detail/density due to the New OLPF. You might also notice less noise under certain conditions in the shadows due to the lack of the IR reflection/glare with the New OLPF.

All this Dragon talk is making me jealous, hopefully i'll get an email soon about an upgrade our current Epic M so i can join the Dragon club :-).

We are in desperate need of a 2nd camera and have debated several times and even put a Carbon Dragon in my shopping cart and almost pulled the trigger but decided to wait for the new OLPF. Hopefully production ramps up soon and i won't have to buy a carbon dragon and can just get a M or X dragon.

Jarred and Red team love all this news and updates. Looks like you've taken the time and spared no expense to make super killer camera.
 
Somebody at RED please, Help. I when I go to download and log in it says "locked"...

guessing I'm not registered as dragon user as I can still login to epic firmware download.
