  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

frame.io

Very impressed by the level of support and care from Emory on Frame.io.

Another thing I've noticed is that the playback stutters and skips frames. The audio is sometimes also some frames out of sync. This is especially critical when doing music videos. Right now I have to send videos to the director instead of letting them view it on frame.io because I keep getting notes that it's not "on the beat" or out of sync. This cannot happen.

I would suggest another method of playback. Isn't there a possible way of buffering the video in another way so that the playback is "loaded" onto the computer viewing? We need to have a totally solid playback that isn't plagued with playback problems. It's not just about reducing quality in order for it to play, it's about the actual playback being not even close to what I'm seeing in the edit. If the only way to properly review the cut is to push the download button to download it, it's way better to keep using Dropbox. Right now, even if my collaborators can buffer the file and view it from beginning to end, we always go back to sending a proper video export instead.

I would suggest to put any feature of any kind on hold until the actual playback is perfect. That's the only thing needed, everything else is in my opinion secondary.

Christoffer, if frame.io does not work why not just use vimeo?
Works like a charm on all devices, possible to upload any resolution, possible to download in a few different resolutions and also original, possible to email link with TC, write comments etc. Upload speed is superb, playback and download speed is as far as I know unmatched especially if you work global. It´s a bit difficult to step frame by frame which is the only thing I think they are lacking. also password protected, possible to set permissions for linking, downloading, commenting etc. the only thing they don't have is the paint on the frame and leave a comment.

And also when the stuff is done / ready for prime time it´s already on a shareable link if it´s on vimeo. As for us pretty much all of our stuff needs to go to vimeo in the end any way to be linked to webpage etc.

I hear you loud and clear Christoffer. Everything you're describing is related to bandwidth constraints, latency, and buffering. It's all being worked on. Lowering the bitrate will improve your performance dramatically but you're right, we have more work to do on the buffering side. The next 2 weeks of development will be dedicated to improving all things related to playback. A couple hours from now we're having an engineering meeting to discuss exactly this. It's a variety of things that will all come together to make everything work better.

We've never actually seen anything play our of sync or drop audio. That's all playback performance related.

To be fair, we offer a pretty fundamentally different value proposition to Vimeo. I use and love Vimeo, but it doesn't begin to solve the problems we're tackling. It was never designed to do so. I'll continue to be a Vimeo advocate and use it to distribute finished work. Great people, great product. Just quite different.

While we are talking Frame i.o...

Is it possible to export an XML with the metadata / information from a Frame i.o project? My own specific interest would be XML for FCPX. Thanks.

Thats all understood and I used and use frame.io in sweden and had none of the problems described here. But if frame.io does not work for christoffer and playback is important for him then I recommend vimeo as to me that is rock solid PC, MAC, Iphone, Ipad and so on and they got the bandwidth sorted.
Still I prefer, your service as it has the "paint on a frame and leave a comment" feature and so on which some directors really like and it´s a great way of getting feedback on the work we do.

Not yet but it's coming :) You can export comments as a plain text file by pressing Cmd + E on the player page. We'll add a button for this soon.

Cool. Thanks for the info about the export. And, yes, yippee for the XML to come.

A button that export a pdf or text file with thumbnails of all the commented frames would be golden. Post producers would love it, then just hit CMD +P to print the to do list :)

yea bjorns idea would be great for me too! I use frame.io a lot, it's been superb for what i need and the support is the best i've experienced from Emery and the team.

So I just shot a bunch of 8K footage for a project that I'm doing in Premiere. I'm a little confused how MASSIVE files like this work in a frame.io workflow... will it just upload proxies? Sorry for such a simple question. I'm trying to see the value of frame.io for Red users.

Just finished a project using it for rushes and assembly sharing and it worked a treat. Even when we had slow internet connections it remained practical.
