With the incredible amount of updates and new products shipping on a daily basis, alongside the equal and opposite lack of updates on the Scarlet front, morale has been intermittent of late. Many are beginning to question the new "philosophy changes", and many feel in some ways abandoned amid all the excitement about Epic-X and new modules shipping. Others simply don't understand. I have prepared this article to address the current state of affairs, as I see it. Please fill in where I've overlooked, and feel free to challenge my findings in a respectful manner. This is at the heart of what this community is all about.

To the ongoing discussions, I will add what you, the reader, may find a different perspective, or perhaps... a perspective that resonates. I want to thank those that have already offered wisdom and those who are attempting to retain composure and balance in their thoughts and words.

Fair warning: this story is not for the faint of heart.

"The Backdrop for our Story"

A bit of history. Quite a few of us have been tracking the progress of Scarlet from day one. We had already joined the excitement of RED's strategy and their movement in the industry towards more complete digital imaging standards. Alas, at the time, such was above our budget to acquire. And while perhaps many of us have at least been lucky enough to rent or work on red shoots (or process said footage), the goal may be to acquire such technology so that personal projects and artwork can be developed with ease. An affordable, professional, and own-able piece of equipment.

Thus, the "Scarlet Concept" was a good one, and naturally, we latched on for the ride. Now enter the ever-extending projected delivery dates. DSLR's (and other such compromised systems) are picked up, somewhat reluctantly, to achieve our artistic goals in the now. However, these once "temporary" solutions become drawn out with the wait, and frustration begins to rise as the light at the end of the tunnel (which, remember dear reader, has seemed so close at times) appears to be tricking our vision, so much that our judgement of distance is no longer constant (kind of a "vertigo effect, isn't it?). The reactions to this are many, and outside the scope of my understanding of human behavior and thought. As a note, philosophies on the matter seem to have mostly bounced somewhere between anger, detachment, patience, and anxiety. This brings us to our current state.

"The Now"

As can be assumed, the prevailing attitudes and philosophies of those following the Scarlet have been forged over an extensive period of time, alongside the others who bring their own experiences and viewpoints, both new and old. One can confidently assume that this progression of thought parallels, in many ways, those that have been more closely following and awaiting the Epic's development and current shipment. And it is, of course, this shipment stage that is most sought-after. With the recent increase in new items (most notably the Epic-X), the desire to take delivery has never been greater for any and every reduser. And that is what is most challenging about the "now."

For many months, Scarlet fans have felt increasingly neglected, as news has been scarce at best compared to the ever-abundant Epic news. Of course, being RED's new flagship, the Epic deserves and is expected quite a deal more attention and loftiness, but remember dear friends, that the large Scarlet crowd has been waiting and watching in envy for quite some time, since the Red One days. Remember also, the investment many have made in this system. No, RED still has not taken any deposits on Scarlets (despite the endless clamoring to place them). Even so, many have invested their time, ideas, and (yes) even their savings accounts towards this camera system. Do not dismiss this investment - it is personal, and thus it is deep. Many have become proponents of industry-wide change based on RED's philosophy. Many have taken a stance for RED despite personal and professional insults. Do not dismiss this investment. Things are changing at every level, and these individuals play a huge part in educating themselves and others on the paradigm shift we are seeing (do not be so quick to forget how stubborn this industry has been to change). However, in the "now" this investment feels, for some, to have been forgotten, unappreciated, or perhaps minimized in some way. Recent "philosophy changes" coupled with the already lacking status updates offer no comfort. So here we find ourselves, still waiting.

Three years have passed, and where have we gotten? Nowhere, it might seem.

"The Future"

And yet, amid the ongoing delays, the frustration, and the silence... we must ask. Certainly we must have gotten somewhere, haven't we? Is all for naught? After all this time, are we to give up hope now? I must admit that there is some doubt, a loss of hope, that is lingering. And it is here that I boldly interject my own voice.

Do not lose hope. Do not be discouraged. The light shines ahead, and the tunnel's end nears. Friends, we are close. Wisdom from the past five years dictates that we trust Jim's leadership and vision. Take a minute to think about it. He's not once led us wrong. Yes, it is a given and admitted fact that historically the whole "delivery date" thing has been quite definitely and frequently underestimated. But consider how recklessly we tend to pursue instant gratification, only to be just as quickly disappointed. And now consider how even more so, RED has consistently and surprisingly overdelivered on their product specifications and quality. RED is about doing things right, without compromise. Good, not just "good enough".

Silence can be interpreted many ways. Anticipation builds. Do not lose hope. RED is for you. RED is for the future. The future dawns, and the prevailing color on the horizon is a deep, deep RED.

Hi Paul, seems like a million years ago when we met up for Red Day! Yes, it's been a frustrating and nail biting wait for Scarlet.

I would say the silence is a form of respect since all estimates have proven inaccurate and when it's ready they will make no secret of it!

Those of us lucky enough to have R1s are quite used to this environment. Even when it existed it was 13 months between my deposit and receiving my camera. Longest wait of my life! More recently I have had an Epic deposit on the table, almost equivalent to a Scarlet in full, for 14 months and I'm 100% happy with the situation.

There is simply no way to make plans or understand any kind of timeframe. We accept it, signed up for it, and fully embrace the voyouristic spirit that is behind it.

Know why?

One day it will magically turn up and from that day your life changes forever.

Think of it as a ZEN exercise in patience and stillness. The rewards are more than just having the world' greatest camera, you will be a better person for the experience! At least that's what it did for me.

All the best,

Jim Hare
Sydney

I think it all hinges on the price point for a Scarlet ready to shoot (batteries, redmote, etc.). If it's out of the range for the majority of folks that have been waiting on it, then it might as well be an Epic.

Many people are waiting on an "affordable" Red camera, but everyone's definition of affordable is different.

Until now, RED's market has relied on its growing (and well deserved) reputation with the big players, the Soderberghs, Jacksons and Finchers of this world. My guess is that they can barely keep up with the demand from that crowd and, as a consequence, this logjammin' (to paraphrase Karl Hungus' greatest hit) has probably put the Scarlet on the back burner as far as manufacturing is concerned.

As soon as RED catches up with the demand for the EPIC, they'll proceed with the Scarlet. It would be foolish to jeopardize one booming market by sacrificing manufacturing resources for the benefit of a market that barely exists (or at least doesn't yet know it exists).

I was looking for a list of flicks shot on RED. Although I'm certain it's only a partial one, it gives a good idea of the exponential growth of our favorite company : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_shot_in_digital

Transpose this table to an XY chart. Phenomenal. A testimony to Jim and his team's hard work.

Perhaps our patience will be rewarded with a 4k Scarlet. Just sayin'. ;)

I'll never forget Jim! You were the first "reduser" I met in person, and you left quite an impression on me. At that time, I had only barely touched a Red One, under very close supervision. Now I regularly work with the camera, and more importantly to me, it's most glorious files! One day, I'll come out there and hopefully find someway to repay your generosity. Thank you for the ongoing advice. Let me know if you ever need anything, man.

Sure, it seems like ages since there's been Scarlet news, but next thing you know there will be revealing photos all over the Internet. Just sayin', hang in there!

Paul,

Very well spoke!!

3 years ago I dreamt in Scarlet... And 2 years and 15 days past I awoke to my own day dawning in Red glory, taking the then reality, the One and creating what I could with the most powerful implement, the boldest brush ever held by mortal man.

Oh, and I do still want a Scarlet in my stable, but it will now be #3 after My MX, Epic-X :)

Great to hear from you Paul! As for generosity, always pay it forward, that's what it's for.

Come to Sydney any time!

Jim

Some nice positivity Paul! There seems to be some nervousness because there has been very little information about the Scarlet - but this isn't something that Jim stated would be happening until things are ready to move. We should expect to here anything until the camera is ready to roll out. Until then, save, plan, plot, write, practice, sleep, wash and repeat.

I still remember a certain person saying he'd eat his shoe if the Scarlet system wasn't released by the end of 2009.

Must have been a tasty shoe.

But all laughs aside, it IS quite frustrating how RED is handling this whole ordeal. Especially now everyone is being kept in the dark about a potential release date. It would help if RED could tell us what is keeping them from releasing the Scarlet.
But perhaps I'm just being impatient?

Perhaps our patience will be rewarded with a 4k Scarlet. Just sayin'. ;)

This is my theory...I mean...the products page still doesnt have info on specifications or anything on scarlet. I was pretty sure it would be up by now, but...I was thinking.."Hey, with JVC making a 4k camera around the same price point...and other 4k cameras on the horizon...maybe RED is going to do better with the scarlet..." I mean come on...4k...120FPS scarlet RAW R3D? for the price...no competition could come even CLOSE to that. And thats just...Sexy...just pure sexy... ;)

I shall continue to hope, but not hold my breathe :)

3K scarlet...still well worth it...I cant WAIT! RED...Cant wait to be your customer. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a 4k Scarlet render the Red One obsolete? And would't that go against Reds whole philosophy.

not if it was on a 2/3rds sensor... people would still get the Red One for the larger sensor...

If JVC's supposedly doing 4k on a 1/2" sensor, I'm guessing Red could pull it off on 2/3rds..

Yeah I guess your right, I didn't think about the sensor.
