  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FORGED - Shot on RED Weapon 8K

Phil, has Adobe's 8k version been released yet? I just saw a Redshark news Adobe Infomercial referring to 8k capability. Don't have my 8k sensor yet but would like to see how it is setup in Adobe.

Premiere Pro CC that supports RED Weapon 8K .R3Ds isn't out yet, but will be out soon. It works identically to how .R3Ds are implemented today. Same interface in term of Master Effects and same settings for Paused and Playback Resolutions.

Good to know Phil... and this coupled with your recent editing on a laptop remarks make working with 8k less daunting. Bigger files for sure, but with SSDs soon to be in the 10TB range, even that is not a big deal.

Nice video Phil, I like the look of the 8K and what you did with it there.

Thanks for the extra info and pics too.

And +1 for the longer runtime directors cut.

We're one tick on the spinning disks away from storage being crazy cheap. That should happen at some point this year. The bigger SSDs are truly great, but we are 3 ticks away from them being wicked affordable. That said, they are pretty much the ultimate solution for motion picture professionals when it comes to editing and what not. At least in my experience. Both of my main systems either have SSDs or SSD RAIDs in them.

Thanks Les. I'll work out a longer cut for sure at some point. There's a lot of shots I'm really proud off that got left on the floor, but that's how those things go :)

I am going to NAB this year. I hope the sword will be displayed at the Red booth. (hint)

Me too! And I sincerely hope RED has an 8K screen at the booth this year.

Alrighty, I'm getting ready for Florida and leaving in about 12 hours to instruct the RED/FilmGate Stiltsville Masterclass. Boy did that rush up on me!

Here's one more still extracted from motion with a little Adobe Camera Raw applied. One of my favorite shots of the billet of steel and nickel early on that didn't make the cut.

I did a write up summarizing many of my posts here into single article if you're looking for a few more words about this shoot:

Hope Peter Chamberlain is taking note. I'm sure davinci is probably there or close to it.

Hi Phil: For this setup did you use the ET V-lock expander or the new RED DSMC2 V-Lock expander?

Hi Frank,

I used the DSMC² BASE Expander + the ET V-Lock Module for this shoot.

This allows me to slap on the DSMC² REDVOLT XL Module when I want to go that route.

I'm probably quick on the take, but I just saw Phil posted up a 8K version of FORGED on YT :)

Took it down. YouTube is still having 8K issues. Working on it.

NP Phil - not like I have a 8K display anyway....but looking forward to watching it on my 4K monitor whenever it is ready.

4K is still up, 8K to watch on 4K or 8K display is the problem. YouTube has apparently been toggling 8K functionality on and off and the conversion from 8K source to 8K stream is the weirdness. Also, this is a DCI 8K aspect ratio which I think put a wrench in the works.

Perhaps we'll have it properly running in 8K at NAB somewhere. That would be nice :)

I don't like to gush, but damn Mr. Holland. What a beautiful piece, watched it so many times, showed it to dozens of folks and everyone is usually just silent afterwards. Many times thank you for your tireless effort, information, encouragement, professional tact and artistic craft you put into this forum. You are a true testament to this industry. I sure hope Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have had an opportunity to see these beautiful images married with their music.

+1, agree.
