  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Forged 6k Weapon and Carbon 6k Weapon Shipping Update

8k orders are currently closed. Unless they have already paid for the 8k upgrade, then I am guessing they will have to wait. Of course this can change at any time.

I was thinking they may have opened them up at full price.

EDIT: Just checked RED.com and as you say, no word of the 8k sensor orders being re-opened at any price.

On the other hand, Jarred did say this in the OP: 3) Forged orders take priority for 8K sensor Upgrades.

And when sales were opened up, RED said they needed to know the precise number of early orders so they could commission that number of sensors to be made. That may have changed by now due to better than expected interest in the 8k sensor.

I'm up late and back in LA and have the urge to wax poetic in a "film format" sort of way.

There's a few people at RED who know exactly how excited I am about 8K and that VistaVision+ sized sensor. I just spent the last year putting pretty much all the glass I'll be using on it together. That general format size is something I hold a very special place in my heart for. And what's even better than that is I have two clients who have been asking for 8K footage already. Hopefully within the year or just after I can make that a reality for them.

Just an idea of the general sensor size we're talking about with Weapon 8K FF Dragon in comparison to both VistaVision 8-perf and Super 35mm 4-perf film stock (maximum usable negative):

The shot of the tractor is circa 2003 I think and shot on VV and oddly scanned full ap, which nobody ever really used VV for, but if you used the max negative you could milk that frame out of it. S35 full ap we used much for VFX plates are larger budget productions.

That white "Mid Frame Split" is basically the area where if you took two S35 frames and rotated them 90 degrees and placed them next to each other that would be the approximate VistaVision sized negative.

Weapon 8K FF Dragon is a bit shorter than maximum VistaVision, but certainly a bit wider. Also, proper Full Ap and Acad Anamorphic "lives" within the 8K Dragon sensor size.

Oh, and for the curious, I hunted around and found somebody that had the entire 2 minute version of the original VistaVision trailer before White Christmas (first ever film shot in VistaVision) was released:

Love the feel of these times in cinema. Hitchcock, Vertigo, North by Northwest. There were a few decades that were crazy excited when it came to film formats and the motion picture experience and the 50's were certainly one of them. Sort of similar to the digital times we live in now in reality, but nobody thinks like that these days.

heh heh awesome thanks for sharing Phil

+1

I've got the same feeling as you Phil.

After the Forged are caught up the line switches over to Carbon Weapon and that is looking like first week of October. There are a shit-ton of Dragon to Carbon Weapon 6K upgrades so its gonna take awhile to get through all of those until we move onto the Mag Weapon 6K.

Ouch for those of us with a Mag Weapon on order. I was hoping for early this fall, but now it looks like it may not even be this year:( I would just get a Carbon, but the extra cost vs extra features over the Mag don't make sense for my work for ROI.

So upgrading to CF weapon from Dragon does it mean that the PL mount I have is mine to keep, or is the TiPL mount that I got included in the trade and have to be shipped in when upgrading?

One can allways hope, right?

Aahh... You're killin' me. I want my 8K yesterday, but didn't pony up the extra $10K for forged over woven... You're almost getting me to pick up the phone and spend the extra premium. Almost. ;)

Seriously?! I ordered the CF Weapon and 8k sensor two days after NAB (not even knowing Forged existed) thinking I would be somewhat close to first in line for the Weapon and 8k sensor. Put down that 20k without even thinking twice. The rep at the time said they will likely be doing the upgrades and new orders for the CF Weapon at the same time. This is when "shipping this summer" was still a real thing. Then when I finally heard about the Forged orders, I was told I can upgrade but I would go to the back of the line of all the forged orders. Now, not only am I lucky if I see now RED in October but the Forged orders also get priority over the 8k sensor which I placed way back in April. What a kick in the face!

All while I continue to shoot on my C300s all the way into fall (in Toronto where after November most projects slow way down because of the weather). Barely any updates regarding shipping times with the CF Weapon except for the "shipping this summer" statement made a while back. This has caused all sorts of planning and financial issues. Huge disappointment!

Alright I'm done venting, but someone had to say it!

Hey man sorry you feel the push. We have done our best to lessen the impact of the increase in Forged orders to Carbon orders by increasing the Forged lines, and you are really are only loosing a week as we stand ( we always said Carbon upgrades would begin in the summer and summer ends the last week of September, Carbon orders start only a week forward of that )

And in reality, if you ordered 2 days after NAB, you are pretty deep in the line anyways so this will probably be less of an impact to you.

Right. There is already a line 2 min after the store opens for ordering. 2 days may as well be two weeks!

If someone like moves onto a Forged weapon today, would i still get a 8K before the end of the year?

I'm seriously considering modifying my MG Weapon upgrade order to a CF Weapon upgrade. My question is since I think I have a pretty early time stamp (I ordered in the wee hours of NAB morn) if I "upgrade" my upgrade do I lose my early time stamp and move to the end of the line??

Mark, end of the line for Forged is WAY sooner than beginning of line for Mg : )

when i saw my friends Carbon Dragon lost %50 worth in a year on upgrade line, i still hesitant to go with Carbon Weapon.

Carbon Dragons sell for alot more than 50% of their value right now so it sounds like he didn't get the best deal. Carbon ( and Forged ) owners have 2 distinct advantages, one being the weight savings, and the other is time. Its a decision that is specific to each individual but from a financial standpoint, if you can rent or use your camera sooner because of demand that usually pays for the upgrade differences very quickly. There are quite a few Forged owners that already have earned that 10k gap.

so I'll take that as a "Yes" modify order moves you to the back of the line. I guess theoretically the last guy to get a CF weapon isn't that far from the first Guy to get an MG. :-)

I don't like to sound like I'm whining but... it seems that if a red owner committed early to the Weapon MG but later decides to spend the extra dough to get the CF instead (particularly since more info about specs and compression ratios etc. came out later) he shouldn't be punished and essentially have his previous order erased and be treated like he is placing a whole new order. Just my 2 cents.
