  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For the Love of God please implement

so - there's no way to adept/modify your underwater housing to fit the module adapter plus rear ssd module I suppose?
Because that (with 512 Gig Mags) would solve your issues for a while…

I'm not a owner nor a shooter myself but I'm doing DIT and post-work and I'd call any deleting-operation on (!)original media level(!) highly dangerous… if you have a Proxy-solution (e.g. Meizler or other PRORES recorders) I wouldn't mind as much because in case of an error you'd at least have an full HD copy to fall back to but without any "backup" and on original media RAW data deleting stuff in camera sounds just very very dangerous to me (it's not something like a RAID1 after all).

just my humble opinion :)

I think we're talking about a non-default engineering menu option for operators who will only choose it if they accept the risk of accidentally deleting clips.

For other users, that option won't even be visible in the menus, let alone selectable.

Its possible but the cost will be quite high, I have to not only buy the card but the adapter the housing extension etc. I am not saying I cant? Does RED even allow for you to record to multiple SSD? I have yet to even find this out yet or get a response on the matter and honestly I would rather do other things with that level of cost. Just sayin... Its killing a cannon with a mosquito.

As I have said this could be a passworded with 4 digit code entered to unlock the option and or some other protective method. As stated before I can format with 1 button thats highly more destructive than deleting one file.

[iceman] You guys are dangerous! [/iceman]

Well I dive with sharks :P
just my humble opinion :)
Understood thanks for sharing your concern

I did come up with a solution for the people who do not want delete, why not just allow disable of format and delete both for those people and allow it to be a option? Then RED can sell way more redmags!

I have never tried this but if your card is full and you really really really wanted to make another shot you could theoretically format the card, shoot just one minute or so, resurface, offload the shot on the card and then use Redundead to find the rest of the shots on the card. They should still be there as you have only recorded over the first shot or so.

It's kind of living on the edge I guess but not much more so then being underwater with humpbacks, hammerheads and what else....

This was my first thought also. It would be great to have an option to selectively delete shots. This might be more difficult of an engineering feat than is at first apparent.

It not rocket science its a fat32 filesystem. If RED had made their own filesystem and all that I might say it could be harder. But seriously this is the most widely used filesystem for camera storage, thumb drives etc.

Some of what I shot yesterday, I have yet to process the whale footage, the other sharks.. fish... etc.

I can speak all I want/why and about what I do but without proof I doubt will have any impact so I will provide proof.

Damn me and my neverending shark encounters.

I also really want a delete last clip or delete selected clips function asap!
I shoot alot on festivals, shooting 100 fps whole day, so cards fill up quickly, nearly all the time directly after a shot i know if its interesting or not. Now cards fill up quickly, data transfer takes long, render time takes long and a editor has to watch it all. If i could just delete incamera i could deliver much better shots with a lot less useless footage also on the card, and it would be way easier for everyone.

C'mon RED, this is really an important feature that can't come soon enough. Hide in somewhere in the menu and add a confirmation option, so a mistake is not easy made. And please add thumbnail overview in playback mode also :)

Some time ago we were discussing deleting clips in camera.

I had the idea then to not delete, but tag clips as "delete when necessary" so they would stay on the mag as long as possible and could not be deleted but overwritten once the space is needed.
Of course it should still contain one of the standard warning messages when pushing record as in "further recording will delete marked clips! sure to continue?"

Maybe if the delete option would have to be activated first, buried deep down in the menu for it to be used. In some sort of "pro-level-sub-menu" The activation could also be password protected so it wouldn't get activated if it's not wanted. And also have the standard double check "sure you want to delete?" feature in there, too. With that, one should be able to use the camera without accidental deletion of files.

Of course it's always safer to not offer it at all, but that doesn't eliminate the possibility of losing data along the way (while copying data etc.) so I don't see a real plus in not offering it at all. Being able to format the mag in camera offers an even higher risk of losing data. People make mistakes. It doesn't really matter when or where ;)

Maybe also instead of deleting they could be tagged as "delete when necessary" so they would stay as long as possible on the card until the space is needed. Then they get deleted by date/time [EDIT: or size]. That would make it possible to recover them for a while.

Maybe if we can get Trent to chime in and see what's the official word about it?

I could really use a 'delete clip' feature too. 'Delete last clip' would be nice but it would be even nicer with the freedom of being able to choose myself. My suggestion however would be that the 'delete clip' feature was buried deep down somewhere or required activation (with security code) within the playback menu so nobody other than a trusted few on-set (like the DIT) could do this and take the responsibility that it was being done right.

One big issue with deleting clips is that data continuity is paramount in the card throughput consideration. We can't just delete arbitrary clips as it would leave large gaps within the linear data arrangement on the media. So we could only delete the last clip written to the card so as not to disrupt. Then, if we needed more space, we would have to also delete the clip recorded prior to the one just deleted, and so on.. Easier to just wipe the card... But that may not be what we want to do at times.

Most of the cinema guys, as well as many other types of shooters, don't like the option of deleting in-camera. I totally see that point of view. I think there needs to be a master-switch of sorts in the camera setup, which can enable or disable the ability to delete on-camara. Perhaps make that function protected by a password or PIN arrangement.

I don't shoot underwater often, actually have only dunked a RED One, not an EPIC. I do occasionally shoot with the camera bagged or even in an enclosure where getting to media is not convenient or not possible. I think the best solution is to stack up on a rear SSD module or two and load in 512GB cards. Have enough media in there to record for the duration of the camera in that bag or housing. Set it up so you will run out of power before you run out of media. Unfortunately, that's not cheap, nor is it a compatible option with underwater enclosures that have been sized to fit the EPIC in a smaller configuration. Maybe what RED needs is a 2TB SSD mag? :)

what about a second mag holder? I saw Ketch with one in a picture... That way you got another mag in the can ready to roll? Granted even with two 512s at some point you will still fill up both mags...

You can stack on rear SSD modules. The camera will use the side module first, then the first rear module, then the next... That gets expensive and the camera gets bigger....

Greg, I am getting around the problem by mounting an Atomos Samurai Blade in my housing, it records from SDI out directly to 10-bit ProRes 422 or DNxHD, up to 30 hours of record time if the specs have been stated correctly. Not an ideal solution, as you'll not have the R3D files when your SSD card is full, but at least you'll have those shots you might have otherwise missed in a reasonably marketable format.

Rouge housing has two monitor viewing ports, I use the rear one for the Red LCD, will be using the top one for the Blade monitor.

but it's not only about underwater shooting. Lots of time, directly after a take you know you really don't need it, and you still have to transfer it, and it get rendered etc. So even only a "delete last clip" function would already be really helpful. And it should be be possible, as there is also a pre-rec function now, so somehow it writes away data that get's erased the whole time.

It would be nice from red to hear about this, why they don't want to do it, or why it's technically really difficult? I for sure would love it, and use it a lot and it wil give me the option to deliver only the good material to editors.

I would value this option, but only if RED made it so that A) It was not easy to access. Only intentional deletions would get through. and B) It would have to be as reliable as the current build is. I don't want to gain one feature only to compromise another.

I too would appreciate a delete feature that you had to very deliberately access (password, multiple key clicks) so that there would be no chance you didn't mean to delete clip(s), even if you have to take the risk that you're deleting the "wrong" ones. I didn't read every post in this thread, but perhaps one compromise solution would be to release a completely separate firmware that differed from release firmware only in incorporating this one feature so that those who absolutely don't want a camera at all capable of overwriting clips (without reformatting) will have that safety retained and those who do want to be able to selectively delete clips will also have the ability. The location on the website for this firmware could itself be separate from the normal firmware support page and would clearly bear this distinctive feature in the title of the file so that there's no chance you don't realize you're loading firmware that will give you delete capability.

Would be a great addition, not just when I shoot underwater but I also shoot a lot of surfing and there are so many times when I wish I could delete clips to save SSD space
