Hello, wanted to introduce here the new 4.99 US $ foolcontrol-r app Apple validated today, just in time for RAVEN :)

It's a handy remote trigger for DSMC2 cameras ... and more ... for 1/30th the price of the full version.

- restricted to REC (start/stop) and REVIEW (last clip) ONLY
- allows to monitor all your camera settings (media, power, timecode, temperature, clip name, recording settings, histogram, stop lights, iso, gamma space...)
- you can explore the whole foolcontrol UI including camera MENU and FOCUS page but no commands will be sent to the camera (read only mode)
- works on any DSMC 1 / 2 camera. DSMC1 requires gigabit wireless router or wifi module (REDLink, HotLink, HotBox, COLR, Latitude...)

runs on iOS 8 and above.
supports all iPhones, iPod touch and iPads (scaled but looks nice on an iPad mini)

Wow! Thank you so much for this! It's like Christmas in March!!

The full version has the clip thumbnail view like posted above?

Yes it was updated to support thumbnails and advanced record options few weeks ago :-)

@Mikael Lubtchansky: First of all, foolcontrol is an absolutely amazing app and I was able to test the full version while getting a demo on the RAVEN. Fell in love with it immediately. I saw the foolcontrol-r version yesterday and wanted to buy it immediately as a new (hopefully soon) RAVEN owner. But I was hesitant and would like to explain why, maybe my feedback will be helpful.

The foolcontrol-r is definitely a great idea for all those slightly better paid DSLR-shooters and upcoming videographers/filmmakers that will be swarming in to buy the RAVEN´s or Scarlet-W´s. I decided not to buy the app and rather go for the full version at a later stage in case it comes in handy for more complicated or bigger productions (which could be 1-2 years away from where I am now). So far I will use the RAVEN more for documentary shoots and a lot of run & gun which lets be be so close to the camera that I wouldn´t need the app. And I guess a lot of new RAVEN owners will use it in a similar way + they will most likely come from a "spoiled" internet environment where they are used to getting a lot of apps for free which come with a lot of functions.

$4.99 is a great price, but I feel just a start/stop + reviewing last clips might be a bit too few functions and if thinking about it, having just a few more basic functions for this price would be a much more satisfying "teaser" for the main app. After all you are targeting a larger audience who are looking to save money, whereas the main app is more for the smaller target group of filmmakers who can afford the the big RED cameras.

If these basic functions were in the app, it would be a total nobrainer for me to buy it:
- Start/stop record
- Change apeture
- Change ISO
- Change shutter speed
- Change resolution
- Change fps

These are the minimum settings I would have expected when I first heard of foolcontrol-r and was sure that all the focusing and other brilliant functions to be restricted to the main app. Even if it would be just start/stop, change apeture and ISO, in case the light changes during a shoot, this app would be very helpful for run&gunners and I personally would buy the app instantly. And it would still tease me enough to constantly think "heck, why don´t I just buy the full app?".

Hope this was helpful in any way. I feel the larger audience you can reach with this app would want just a thing or two more. :)

Thanks Moritz for the feedback :-)

I hear you on more feature and people used to pay nothing for great apps but on such a small market with free upgrades and a 97% discount I just cannot enable too much features before I start quickly to starve my 2 kids...

Seriously this is mainly for casual start stop and a simple way of getting a good look at the app features before purchasing the regular version... I often have request for an iOS demo version like I have on OS X so that's the way I found around it.

The full app with all those features and much more is probably one of the cheapest accessory you will find if you own a pro camera :-)

This version will also allow me to issue temporary licenses on a specific camera for a limited period of time, raffle prices or sponsored rental and educational deploy...

Fully agree on you with this. The overall amount of RED users is still small (compared to DSLR users at least), but I´d assume it will grow faster with the new RAVEN model especially. And then I felt an app that blows my mind, even with few selected functions, will convince me faster to go for the main app. On the other hand, the few functions would more easily convince me to buy the small app in the first place. Just start/stop didn´t hit the sweetspot with me just yet.

I assume I have too limited insight in the market, but just throwing it out there how I think and I am sure a ton of people in a similar situation like mine will think the same.

Thanks for answering btw, makes it more tempting for me to go for the app, knowing how dedicated you are behind it. :)

Pay the man for the full app, it's so worth it! Let's not starve his kids!

Are there any plans for an Android version?

no Android planned for immediate release but app runs on iPod touch or iPad mini if you need a small device dedicated to remote camera control.

Having run the app on both the iPhone and iPad, if you have the choice, the iPad offers better control from the simple fact it's a larger screen, i.e. more data points.

We can all sympathize with Mr. Zimmerman's request for more features, but I see what Mikael is trying to do.

I bought it immediately yesterday for a couple reasons.

1) it is the cheapest remote start/stop you can get.

2) It gives you or an assistant the ability to always see all the settings without messing with the main camera monitor, or having cables or another wireless monitoring setup for that purpose.

3) It gives Mikael incentive to keep working on this - I bought the laptop app version for my scarlet-w but haven't purchased the iOS version.

Question, Mikael:

My cam is out on rental so can't check it but does this work when you are using the computer app via ethernet/rs232? i.e. we see all the changes or will cabled ethernet disable the wifi function so the IOS app won't work?

It really depends how you connect...
In general camera will accept only 1 connection at a time on wifi but underwater you have no wifi anyway....
if you use ethernet port on an epic / scarlet you can connect up to 8 devices and will need a wifi router for iOS access.
Have not tested simultaneous connection via CTRL port / s232 adapter for the OS X version on DSMC2 but will try to run a test (will also require a wifi router on surface).

Does this work as switchable between multiple cameras? If not, can I buy one for each camera and use it that way?

Usable on any camera just fine.

Oh good... then if I have three cameras on at the same time I can select which camera's data I can view.

correct.

to avoid switching the iOS device from one camera to the other each time (if using in camera Ad Hoc generated wifi network), it is best to connect all your cameras and device to an existing network (infrastructure mode + wifi router if indoor).
Then you can easily switch cameras from within the app itself.

Reading the replies I´m learning a lot here, which is awesome. I guess I am coming too much from a DSLR background, solo and run&gun and have less production experience. So my bad if I was leaning too much towards one direction, but I´m just expecting a lot more people like me to swarm in and buy Raven´s and they will have very different mindset coming in, hence my thought on a few more features.

In any case, the main app Mikael is is producing is an absolutely awesome tool that is worth every penny and I will definitely try to support him by telling all my friends about it the least. :)
