With alot of new REDusers joining with buzz about the Raven, Scarlet-W and Weapon and even some new Dragon users - I decided to give something back to the App Creator who has put some much time and effort into the system and for giving us the opportunity to test out the app in the early days.

At The Bench is a small series I am starting where we give a "short" overview of some of our favorite bits of kit we use day to day on our shoots and rental kits.
I wanted to do this video in the early days of the beta before it was on the app store but time just wasnt on my side with lots of work and little free time.

I hope you all like it - any feedback would be amazing. For those of you who dont know about the app more info can be found here -

Enjoy!

Thanks Jonny, was a nice surprise discovering your video review tonight featuring all those nice chicks !

If you run into an issue connecting to the wifi network make sure the wifi channel you're on is not too crowded.
Usually it is a much better idea to go straight to channel 6, in camera settings than staying on default channel 1...

Generally if you can, when shooting indoors / studio is it best to go thru a router using infrastructure mode.
You can also replace the rightside antenna on REDLink module with a bigger 2.4 GHz SMA antenna... And I've also noticed the wifi robustness and range to be significantly improved on DSMC2 body vs REDLink module on EPIC.

Thanks again for taking the time to do this review.

Looks like we are going to need to upgrade to a Weapon then Mikael ;) haha

I will certainly look into changing out the Antenna would be very intersted to see what kind of improvment we get. I will also double check our channel settings and make sure we swap it over to 6 as suggested.

Keep up the good work!

How well does FoolControl work with wrack focusing? Is the electronic control of the EF lenses going to jitter as it wracks (like the Redmote does on the Scarlet, etc), or are the focus movements smooth, as one would expect with a follow-focus? This apps looks AMAZING, but if the electronic focus control of the lens is still incapable of smooth adjustments then Im going to have a hard time justifying the cost of the app :/ Not to mention that with jerky focus movements, any focusing while shooting just ruins the shot :(

It's very smooth on all the EF "L" lenses I have used. I've Used it on many shoots on the DJI Ronin and the AC's have always been impressed.
The only thing that isnt smooth is Iris control becasuse the lenses are not de-clicked.

Havent used it with lenses such as the 18-55 or 50mm 1.8 so I dont know how good their motors are inside.

Thanks. I would hope the L series lenses would be smooth. I would expect that at the least. Right now I just have one lens that is not an L series so I will just have to try it. Hopefully its smooth. If not, at least I know its the lens and not the inability of the app or the electronics, and that is good news (to know its possible).

Really looking forward to the RT motion latitude and using foolcontrol from there, hopefully that can consolidate all these networks.

Does anyone know if Fool Control can control N. D on motion mount?

Yes ND and MMount modes are easy to control directly from the main page on both iOS and OS X version of the app.

Same with EF-S lenses. I use several Canon lenses including the 85mm 1.8 and EF-S 17-55 which covers all of the 5K but not 6K sizes. The 85mm covers all. No Canon lenses come de-clicked that I know of so iris changes do occur in hard increments. Overall, it's a lovely device which I use with OffHollywood's Hotlink interface. WiFi range is vastly improved with a larger antenna though, just make sure it's the right WiFi frequency.

Mikael, any plans to develop FoolControl for the new Teradek Colr device? It interfaces with the ethernet port on the Red Dragon/Epic and allows full control through that connection as I understand it.

Hi Bruce
Foolcontrol (iOS and OS X) is working just fine with a COLR device using the GIG-E port on EPIC / SCARLET ;-)

I just did discover that, thanks Mikael. Since it uses the ethernet port can you still use the Hotlink into the data port simultaneously? Strange question I know and probably - most likely not but it would provide both a local (near camera) menu access for an AC as well as Colr control for the DIT station.

Yes that would works just fine too. As far as I know the gig-e connection should allow 8 simultaneous connection so hopefully the COLR itself should be enough for multiple access... Will try to verify if that is the case this week.

That would be pretty amazing. I could have the Colr sending me a RLF image, correcting it to go out to all the monitors on board & at Vid Village - as well as having the AC with his iPhone having wireless access to the menus for various settings for say steadicam or crane/arm shots. Pretty cool if that can all be possible.

Hi Bruce and Mikael, I'll take a shot at this one. YES! This is exactly what COLR is for. The ability to multitask functions like you are describing. And Mikael is correct in saying that it can be access by multiple devices.. as it is a network device and accessed via WiFi/Ethernet.

Andrew, so you can use the Colr for all of the connections then, correct? I am anticipating purchasing a Colr soon but for now I am using the Hotlink from OffHollywood. Sounds like Colr would make that unit somewhat redundant.

Yes, it can! Simultaneously.

Fair enough, we work closely with Mark Pederson - he's been excellent in making sure a lot of the functionality in COLR is up to spec.
