  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOOLCONTROL for Iphone @ IBC

Jamon, just talked with Luigi, he says it works as expect on his sigma 18-35 but he uses the Canon version....

Did you try to either re-init the lens (in options) or remove / re-install the lens when it happened ?
Did you touched or change the focus ring manually and does it still happen after camera reboot ?
Feel free to email me so we can test things but there is no reason to hit the wrong marks if the lens is properly recognized by the camera. Did you try with other lenses too ?

Thanks

Also I am not sure if the 18-35 is a parafocal lens... does it keep focus when you zoom in and out ?
If so it could explain that the marks are not good if you set them at 35 but then recall while zoomed out...

Mikael, I didn't touch the lens at all or adjust it manually. I have done the re-init and reboot over and over, it does reinitialize the lens but the same thing keeps happening. All the times i've tried it the lens has been at a fixed focal length. I've tried it with the 50 1.4 (not sure if it's supported in the firmware) and the same thing happens. With mine, what I noticed that I didn't put in the first post is that when it goes to a mark that I set it's actually showing a different focus distance than the one that was set, so if the mark is actually 1ft when I set it, it goes back to the mark perfectly in the app but the focus distance will say 1.2ft for example.

I started to play with it again with the 18-35. I figured me setting the marks may have been the culprit, so re-init and wiped all the focus marks and just turn the focus knob to and from various objects that I have set up at various focal lengths, the infinity focus distance creeps closer to the lens the more I turn the knob back and forth.

It's a great app, i'm sure you'll figure it out.

OK for the displayed value it is not accurate enough, the camera is only sending an approximative distance. That is why I created the focus discs for accurate distance reading. It should go back to the correct focus point all the time exactly tho.

Let me know if you do more test. I wanted to remove this value as it is not accurate enough but decided to leave it... I could always add a setting to hide it...

If the focus marks are drifting like you describe with the infinity there must be a problem with your lens or mount or camera.... Please get in touch by email so we can test it further but that should not happen with a normal lens.

What FW version are you using ?

I have 5.2.29 FW on the camera. Just sent you an email, thx. FYI the focus stays the same when I go back and forth to different distances using the redmote.

FWIW Horus Aerial are the very first ones using foolcontrol RS232 to connect iPad directly to the camera without wifi.

It allows both a super robust connection when wifi is not possible and in that case easy integration with their rig theu the rotating contacts in the wescam ball. Also since the app cannot be distributed thru Apple for legal reasons it does in return allow faster and easier updates or specific customized app features if needed.

Thanks for a great app Mikael, could you expand on this comment? Is this available now or only out for beta testing for a few? Thx Thommes

It is available but it is an ad hoc 'per device' distribution due to apple's restrictions. I will be making a few more cable next week or so.

Get in touch by email if you need info on pricing and how it works...

@ Tomasso Lol !
Actually you hit the nail on the head that mysterious adapter module should have the Redlink built into it. Turn 2 modules into one Genius ! In fact we should start a thread requesting it .

In regards to pics, it's easy no need for pics just run rails either 15 or 19 mm out the back and mount battery plate to it. Similar to what owners have been doing with Redone's or with BM hyperdeck on Epic/Scarlets.

Battery save ON will let the iOS put the screen, then the device to sleep if you are not touching the screen. OFF will keep it up but drain battery faster if you are not plugged in.

Second option, is related : it will let the app auto-reconnect to previous camera if you were disconnected (by switching apps, putting the device to sleep...) It is very fast, as soon as your relaunch foolcontrol it will reconnect to the same camera if available on your network...

Hi Mikael! Just bought your iOS app in anticipation of the arrival of my OFFHOLLYWOOD HOTLINK. Is there any way to access the UI without having camera connected? I would like to familiarize myself with the UI while waiting for the HOTLINK...

I've already asked, the answer is NO

Shame. That should not be hard to implement. This will be extremely useful for organizing meta-data and do post-shoot reporting from data stored in cloud. I hope this is coming in the near future. When RCXP effectively killed Storm and Clipfinder - the functions most missed in RCXP is meta-data organizing and reporting - something that both Storm and Clipfinder did extremely well. I hope Mikael can fill this gap with this app...

All the lists shown in the app come from the camera - that is, they are not hard coded in the app. This makes it extremely easy for the app to adapt when new features are added to the camera. Unfortunately that makes it difficult for an app to work in an "offline" mode.

RCPX did NOT kill Storm.

The Foundry killed Storm.

After they sold to The Carlyle Group and then threw out all the amazing tagging features and spun the framework code off into Hiero - which was their original intention (making a timeline for Nuke) and they suddenly didn't need to value a strategic relationship with RED anymore.

It broke my heart six ways to Sunday. There were features in Storm that do not currently exist in any software package, Hiero included.

Rant over.

But if the list does come to the app - it has the data. It should be then able to save that data to cloud storage for off-camera access after the shoot. You will add scores of DITs to the customer list... ;o)

Mark - we were both on the beta - but I am not sure if you are aware I was also on the alpha. Storm initial concept and idea was conceived and presented by me to Simon Robinson - one of the founders. I was intimately involved in its entire development and was also the one publicaly demoing it at IBC in 2010 at The Foundry's booth. The Storm further development stopped directly as a result of RCXP coming out and this is clearly stated on the respective thread here on RU. Same happened to Hans with Clipfinder. They both admitted it was impossible to compete with free app of the magnitude of RCXP. The re-directing of Storm code into Hiero happened afterwards and it was a logical way to not waste all the R&D done for Storm...

Storm still runs well on my 2010 MBP BTW... Just no new color science / Dragon support.
Agreed that there are so many things no other SW still does to this date - that is why we have envisioned the Storm to be like - to fill that gap...

My hope is that Mikael can step into those shoes (he is clearly capable of doing so) and add at least the meta-data reporting / off-camera management. It would only elevate this already amazing app to a whole new level of purpose and usability...

Fingers crossed...
