  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOOLCONTROL for Iphone @ IBC

Nice piece of work. Works beautifully with the camera! I was bit suspicious whether the screen of my iPhone4s is big enough, but all doubts were immediately removed.

Thanks Lauri :-)
On iPhone 4 and iPad (vs iPhones 5/6) the menu to access other pages requires an extra click... other than that it works all the same.

got the app:) all i need now is the hotlink to arrive

Hi Mikael we'll done

have you made a simple walk thorough of the various ways to connect that i missed?

Mikael, played bit more with this. The focus knob is simply wonderful. Personally I do not miss any hardware knob. When still had Red One had also the Birger/ViewFactor hardware knob for focus, but I find this one even better. True progress.

As a wildlife shooter typically have to adjust the focus and iris simultaneously. Since these two are not on the same page, I wonder, could you add the iris to the focus page as well? I guess it is not possible to assign the iris to the phone's volume hardware button (the + and - buttons/switch).

made a short and not so informative video but the iOS app has an online help system for each page and the one on connect page should help with connection methods and setup... else shoot me an email :-)

you can adjust iris on the focus page (click on the lens F stop below focus knob)... Sadly the physical volume buttons are not allowed by Apple for any other use... feel free to email me any suggestion or feature request. A lot more of cool stuff are coming both for the iOS and OS X apps...

Mikael - downloaded this morning... can't wait to fire it up this weekend and see what you've done!

Hot diggity! I'm ordering my ipod touch today and should be getting my HOTLINK as soon as Mark starts shipping, presumable sometime in the next week. Will download the app as soon as my ipod arrives, which should be Tuesday.

Congratulations, Mikael. This really sounds and looks like it will be FANTASTIC.:-)

Mikael, I'm looking at various ipod touch options and comparing hardware in them to iphone 5. Can you tell me if there would be any significant performance differences (especially on live focus gestures) using a 5th generation (latest, I think) ipod touch (A5 CPU and 512 MB of RAM) and an iphone 5 (A6 CPU and 1 GB RAM)? In other words, is anything foolcontrol doing maxing the resources of the ipod touch 5th generation?

foolcontrol is not graphic or ram intensive app and runs very well even on iPhone 4s...
I run it all the time on an iPod touch 5 and it is fine. Only advantage on an iPad or iPhone 6 is the larger screen size, but processor speed and capacity have very little or no impact on the performance...

Only advantage at the moment with an iPhone is the vibration (have some optional vibrating mark for focus, more experimental for now than a really useful feature imo but it may evolve) and I shall soon add new stuff like camera gyros position logging for VFX along with focus distance, timecode and GPS coordinates and that can only work on an iPhone (the GPS part).

iPod touch should let you do everything you need and there is no limitation from using this hardware... not sure about battery life but in both cases you may need an external battery or a way to power it from camera via USB if you intend to use it all day...

So well done, Mikael. The more I mess with this, the more I'm amazed at how in depth it is. Thank you.
Thanks Todd, glad you like it :-)
Yep, there are lots of stuff to discover in the app... I tried to list every gesture and "hidden" stuff in the various help pages, so if you read each one of them you should be good...
I will start adding new stuff now that the app is released and FW 5.3 is beta with many more cool controls...

A criticism levelled at Red vs Arri cams is ease of use . Last night ( my time) Foolcontrol changed that perception for ever.

Thanks so much for the clarification. I will go for a refurbished ipod touch 5 for now to save $. My brother has offered me his iphone 5 when he upgrades to the 6 early next year, so if the iphone specific features make it worthwhile then, I can upgrade free of charge.:-)

got the app, was hoping at least get familiar with the interface, but it doesn't fire up without connection,
can't wait for hotlink thing!

I was hoping to do the same, as that's the reason I ordered my ipod touch today. It will be here Monday. Ah well. Good things take time.:-)

Sorry Paramon. It is not connecting simply because it depends on the camera for most of its parameters. If RED adds a new format, color space or feature like gioscope the app doesn't need to be updated as nothing is hard coded and almost everything is coming from the camera... menu selection will change depending if you have an epic, scarlet, dragon, monochrome and which FW version you're running.

Lots of testers asked for an offline mode but that would require to first create a virtual camera that the app could talk to... Had no time to do it as it would be quite a complex task, but maybe one day I'll try...

In the meantime, you have to be patient or try to send Mark some more coffee, no sleep pills and good chocolates...

I so badly wanted to beat Mikael and start shipping HOTLINKs before FOOLCONTROL iOS went live on iTunes so that Mikael would be in the "hot" seat instead of me :)

We are basically only one week behind - the good news is that we will ship more units, much faster. Almost there ...
